It illustrated how social media is going on a whirlwind tour throughout your organization touching areas I never expected it to touch. It's not like the early days of the internet - where you can hire a bunch of coders, stick them in a corner and have them create your website and do all things web - its much more involved and truly touches "everywhere" in your organization. Because of that you need a comprehensive strategy that will involve the whole organization and leverage the human network and human capital typically trapped in organizations of all sizes. This book does an excellent job of explaining and then illustrating with real world examples how to create a strategy that will unlock the power hidden everywhere in your organization. There are a ton of "evaluation and measurement" books out there, but he's succeeded in putting one together that both communicates a vision about why this stuff matters and presents in a very helpful manner how folks should go about bringing that vision into reality. It has a great layout, mixes narrative with visuals and is just very well done. Really very helpful and I'm sure this will become a mainstay for those teaching these ideas--as well as those putting them into practice. Social Media Strategies for Professionals and Their Firms: The Guide to Establishing Credibility and Accelerating Relationships (Wiley Professional Advisory) ReviewMichelle Golden's book, "Social Media Strategies for Professionals and Their Firms" is incredibly valuable and worthwhile, right from the start. It may be the definitive book right now to use to understand what "social media" really means and then implement and apply it to your professional firm.
The book is written in a very conversational, informative style, which will be extremely helpful to those new to "social media," as well as those already actively using Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook and blogging for business purposes, who want to learn more and go to the next level.
The book is full of real examples, definitions and adaptable suggestions. It will help you to think about your "strategy" and how to implement social media into your business. The book is very well designed, so that it can either be read through, or used as a reference tool to learn more about a specific topic. Michelle clearly explains the rationale and issues regarding social media in general (which is outstanding), then provides the What, Why, and How to use each of these tools, as well as Tips for each. She has even included a very detailed footnote section, for those interested in further reading or support for her content, as well as a thorough Glossary.

This book will definitely be helpful to professional firms (both small and large, for a partner in charge or the social media "champion"), as well as anyone else who has an interest in applying social media for their business. This is an excellent book, which I highly recommend. Anyone who wants to learn more about this topic will find this a must-have book.

I liked this book a lot. It was well written, and well organized. It provides a public relations slant on Web 2.0. The author calls this PR 2.0. Many PR professionals work in the nonprofit sector. And many of those people don't easily accept change. It takes them a while to turn on a computer and use it. Once it is turned on they then have trouble maximizing the computer's potential. In my humble opinion such workers will benefit greatly by getting a copy of this book and reading it.
The author is a marketing consultant with a specialty in PR. After writing this book I suspect her new speciality is PR 2.0. She discusses what is required to go from traditional PR to PR 2.0. She talks about how to embrace PR 2.0 and where the field is going. And I think her book is original enough to justify reading it along with other books I have read dealing with the subject.

To get a great perspective on how to use blogging in your PR efforts I recommend pricey #6 (It's an audio book). #8 is great to get the scoup on podcasting. The New Relationship Marketing: How to Build a Large, Loyal, Profitable Network Using the Social Web ReviewThis latest book by the prolific writer and speaker Mari Smith is her best book yet. Among the blizzard of books on social media and the various social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, etc,) being published, this book stands head and shoulders above the others (many of which I have read in order to stay current in an area so important to my clients).
What makes this book so special is Mari's focus on relationships. Anyone can use the social media platforms, as so so many do, to create a stream of one way communication that is quickly lost in the millions of posts every hour. The seemingly better strategy is to put the "social" back in these social media tools and Mari does a great job of laying out how to do this on both a strategic and tactical basis. And she manages to do so with a writing style that is supportive for relative "newbies," while still offering valuable insights to very experienced social media aficionados.
The book is very smartly organized into two parts: the first part describes relationship marketing basics, and the second then goes into detail on nine specific steps for growing your business (or your personal visibility) through relationship marketing. I was pleased to see just how current the book was on the latest developments, no easy chore at the speed of change in social media.
What I liked most was the way that Mari illustrated her concepts with personal stories about what has worked (and not worked) for her. In a world where so many proclaim to be social media experts, few - if any - have the demonstrated track record that Mari enjoys on the various major social media platforms. Her role modeling of that which she teaches in this book (and in her courses, which I have had the pleasure to attend) makes her someone worth listening to, if not emulating. Mari advocates "radical strategic visibility"... and enjoys the benefits of having achieved exactly that. Having her share how she has accomplished this might seem pretentious coming from some, but not from Mari whose writing style reflects the delightful spirit and wonderful grace that one experiences when meeting her in person or communicating with her on one of the platforms.
If you want to learn the latest from someone who is widely regarded for "knowing her stuff," communicates her wisdom in an easy to read and to understand style, and walks her talk, this is a must read on this important topic. A definite Five Star+. Don't just read this book; implement Mari's nine steps and you will begin to experience the benefits of "radical strategic visibility."

Flip the Funnel: How to Use Existing Customers to Gain New Ones ReviewMarketing consultant and blogger Joseph Jaffe was the keynote speaker at the MarketingSherpa Email Summit in January 2010. Each member of the audience received a copy of Flip the Funnel courtesy of the event's sponsor. I've just returned from the conference and read the book on the trip home.
As is common in business books, Jaffe synthesizes a few new facts and concepts, with back-to-the-basics common sense, a collection of case studies into a strongly presented New World View. Jaffe's main point is compelling. The funnel that gets flipped in the book's title is the new business acquisition sales funnel of AIDA: Awareness, Interest, Desire, and Action.
Jaffe asserts that in today's new media environment - fueled by new social media connections - companies should instead focus on customer retention by having the highest quality customer experience. By focusing on the funnel that begins with a customer's first purchase, delighted customers can then be activated to become evangelists for the company. Thus, the company will grow it's customer base through a powerful word of mouth effect.
Jaffe's new flipped funnel is ADIA: Acknowledgement, Dialogue, Incentivization, and Activation.
As a Marketing Director who is developing a new social media strategy, Flip the Funnel has caused me to view our plans with a new perspective. On Monday, I will be taking the concepts from his keynote and the book to my colleagues at MCH, and I will be incorporating some of the ideas into my strategic plan.
That said, the book isn't perfect. It would have benefited from sticking closer to its most important concepts. Also, some of its case studies and examples aren't fresh. The YouTube PR horror stories of Domino's Pizza and United Airlines have already made the rounds. I spotted some typos and minor factual mistakes, too.
All in all, I recommend the book, and I highly recommend Jaffe's speaking events. He's a terrific presenter with an important approach to business in the age of social media.Flip the Funnel: How to Use Existing Customers to Gain New Ones Overview

KaChing: How to Run an Online Business that Pays and Pays ReviewI have been looking for legitimate ways to make money online and got this book to help me do just that.
Some of the book was great, but there were also a lot of confusing and unorganized parts. In short, the book was all over the place.
Some of the sections were very basic and others more advanced. I'm not sure if it's for a beginner or somebody that is advanced. It doesn't really focus on one group. You'll get something out of it I'm sure, but if you're like me, only about half of it will apply to you. Because of this, I'm rating it right down the middle.
A few days before this book, I read Laptop Lifestyle - How to Quit Your Job and Make a Good Living on the Internet (Volume 1 - Quick Start Guide to Making Money Online) and was glad to have done that, since I feel it helped me to "read between the lines" with the information in this book. There were times when reading this one that I was going right along with the author, understanding what he was saying, but then he'd lose me by jumping to something else without finishing the thought. At the end, I was left with a bunch of odds and ends of a big picture but no real plan of action for making money now, with the exception of Adsense ads on a blog I have. If all the needed information to make a good living online was in this book, it wasn't organized well. He talks about blogging a lot, so perhaps this book was developed from random blog articles?
Just to give you an example of what I'm talking about, the first part of the book is a very basic section he talks about setting up a blog with Blogger. Then he talks about adding ads to make money from it. I was with him at this point and that's what I've done so far. He gives a list of banner ad companies and talks about Google Adsense and that was helpful to me. If you are not online at all, this is a good thing to read to make that happen although some of the finer details and technical terms are not explained well. If you've been doing this a long time, maybe you'll do better than me at figuring out how it all fits together, but if you've been doing it a long time, you're probably beyond a free blog on Blogger, too. I just started and am already seeing the limitations.
I enjoyed the part where he talks about "7 Types of Content" to put on blogs. For example, posts that review things, posts that interview people, "Top 10" lists, and Q&A posts. This gave me some good ideas and was the highlight of the book for me.
Then he starts to get more advanced and talks about buying articles to post on your blog, which I think is a good idea, because I'm busy. My hope of saving some time didn't last long though because when I went to the site he recommended, it appeared to be brand new, with only a few articles to purchase.
This is the kind of "back and forth" you get with this book. One minute you're following along and completely with him, then there is a detour that kind of derails the plan or at the very least confuses it. One minute he's doing something for beginners, like helping you get a free blog up, and then he spends an entire section talking about legal issues of posting testimonials.
Then he talks about passive revenue with membership sites. Then speaking. Then coaching programs. Then branding strategies. Then how to deal with PR and media people.
There is a lot of information here, but very little detailed information. If you are looking for a book that is going to guide you step-by-step to a business that makes money online, this is not it.
What this book does well is give you little ideas you can use in an existing business. The only problem there is that he jumps around to so many areas, he doesn't give the finer points of anything. I was hoping for more specifics.KaChing: How to Run an Online Business that Pays and Pays Overview
