Weak Links: The Universal Key to the Stability of Networks and Complex Systems (The Frontiers Collection) ReviewIf you ever needed another good reason to value your grandmother even more, you'll find the answer in "Weak links".
Structurally, his book starts with an exposition on network theory and
terminology, then the application and discussion of these concepts to
real-life complex systems on many scales and applied to many domains (physical, natural, technological, social). His main point is, as the reviewer noted above, that 'weak' links (weak: additional/removal does not statistically affect the average of some metric) stabilize systems.
The book has thorough footnotes, one can delve as deep as one would like
into the professional papers. In addition, Csermely is an honest scholar - he shows his hands when there is mere speculation (you have to see the book's unique pictograms to appreciate the effects)
After pouring through several alternatives, I have adopted this book as a
textbook for my Science of Networks class (I'm CS fac at an elite US liberal arts school), and I recommend it to anyone without hesitation for a readable, and learned exposition.
I only have two or three caveats from a specialist's point of view: The
phenomenological discovery of power laws in complex systems is not unusual
and may not be evidence of any SF properties. Scale-free is an abused
term, and I wish the controversy about it were explained a bit more. Also, from a modelling point of view, I wish Doyle and Carlson's work on HOT systems were discussed in more depth.
But these are minor points, relatively speaking. This is a gem of a book:
erudite, humane, funny, accessible and thoroughly fascinating. On every
page, there are delights that lead down new intellectual paths.
Csermely did a great service to pedagogy and to this budding science with
this magisterial survey. Outstanding in its ease of access for intelligent
undergraduates and commendable for intellectual honesty - I wish more

CCNP ONT Official Exam Certification Guide ReviewMinimal Fluff. Clear and concise explanations, very good examples. I used the book to study for the ONT exam, which I successfully completed. There are a few methods that are covered and all I was interested in was, what the methods are, why were they developed, when to use them and how. The book proved to be right on the money. I would recommend this book as a Reference source as well.
Personally, I wish they would write technical books in this fashion using the following headings: Method, Why developed/Issues addressed, When to use and How.

Nonstop Networking: How to Improve Your Life, Luck, and Career (Capital Ideas for Business & Personal Development) ReviewI purchased this book based on the multiple 5-star reviews. Now that i have read the book,I have the following comments:
The bottom line is that this book DOES have a few good networking pointers. Unfortunately, I found that much of the book contains fairly straight-forward advice, for example things like "listen with your inner ear" when talking to others, be "caring," etc.
Also note that the book is 170 pages, but is printed in double-space and large font, and the width of many of the 5-inch wide pages is further reduced by a second 2-inch internal margin in which is printed special notes and call outs. In short, this book is a lot shorter than it lets on. I would guess its a 50 page book in standard font, single space, etc. Not that this is bad, just know what your getting when you buy it.
I don't want to be too negative however. The author deserves credit for giving good advice on how to organize contracts into certain groups to help target networking strategies. The use of gifts in maintaing one's netowrk, and several other tips on staying connected to contacts. I particularly found Chapters 7 ("Keeping your Network Alive and Growing") and 9 ("Organizing and Keeping Track of Your Network") particularly helpful. I hope there will be more of this type of advice in her next book (*See comments below).
I am still waiting for a straight-forward networking book that remains focused on techniques and strategies instead of abstact (and largely unhelpful) advice on "speaking with enthusiasm and energy." The latter type of comments, while important, can be dealt with in a single "etiquette/demeanor" chapter.
An annoying feature of this book is the "I have a friend name Charlie who..." approach to discussing the subject matter. An alarming amount of authors have now embraced the idea of introducing us to "friends" of theirs in each chapter of the book to expose the reader to different concepts. Personally, I find this method patronizing and unrealistic. It would be a lot more helpful for the author to write a chapter that starts out: "I interviewed 10 people, each of whose networking skills I admire. Their techniques had the following in common: [list]. Although, their individual styles varied in the following respects: [list]." "One method that my associate Charlie uses that I found particularly useful was ______. I personally use this technique but have modified it as follows:_________." "I was reported to me that ______ didn't work very well because _______." Etc.
Update: After I initially published this review, Ms. Nierenberg (the author) sent me an e-mail responding to my comments here on Amazon. She tactfully took issue with the "negativity" of my review. I went home and reflected on my comments and agreed with the author that my comments were too "negative." I have since amended the review above to be more constructive. I also note that Ms. Nierenberg told me that this book was intended as a starting point (a kind of "cliff notes" for networking) and that she was working on a second, more comprehensive book. Internet Communications Using SIP: Delivering VoIP and Multimedia Services with Session Initiation Protocol (Networking Council) ReviewThis books presents SIP, the protocol for Session Initiation. It covers many aspects, including conferencing, security, Internet telephony, user preferences.
The book is not 400+ pages as Amazon indicates but just below 300. Why does this matter? Because, with 17 chapters, this gives an average of less than 20 pages per chapter. As you can guess, 20 pages are not sufficient to explain topics such as Internet telephony, or conferencing. Even the SIP protocol is not presented fully. Only the major messages are listed with a short description of their use.
I was also disappointed by the book organization. The SIP Overview chapter which explains how SIP works is chapter 5. All the preceeding chapters mention SIP before we even know what SIP is. This is most confusing unless you have already some SIP knowledge.
The book tries to cover too much. We get a whirlwind tour of many topics, none of them explained appropriately. The book opens many issues that remain unanswered. If you want a shallow overview of SIP, this book may meet your need. Dendritic Spines ReviewThis new monograph on the dendritic spine belongs on the shelves of all neuroscients--after having been at the bedside for reading because one can't put it down. An obvious scholar as well as researcher, Yuste synthesizes a very large amount of data into an orderly series of chapters that describes the spine from the dendritic shaft to the most distal point of the filopodium. Starting with history and an homage to Cajal, Yuste starts by clearly articulating his biases. He then proceeds to discuss in nicely compartmentalized chapters everything from the structure of the spine to spines as calcium compartments to computational aspects of spine function. Although each chapter can be throught of as appealing to morphologists or physiologists or pharmacologists, the clear exposition and fluid writing make reading chapters "outside" of ones area of expertise a pleasure, and one rapidlly begins to assemble a sense of the spine. The only shortcoming is that even Yuste doesn't yet formally approach the issue of global behavior and spines---although comments scattered through the book (particularly in early and late chapters) leaves the reader with impressions of possible spine contributions. In an era of escalating prices that often places books out of the hands of readers, this volume, even with glosy color plates, is so modestly priced that one would have no hesitation in assigning it as a text for a class, leaving plenty of money left over to to discuss the spine at a local bar.Dendritic Spines Overview

The hubs that we choose to get involved with (for example, the company that we work for) are crucial for our success. Join a fast rising firm in a growing industry, and it will be difficult not to do very well.
Smart people choose jobs, activities or places to live that will expose them to a wide range of people and ideas, because they know that one of these `weak links' can be the source of their own defining idea or enterprise. Once upon a time we lived in villages where we knew perhaps 100-200 people. This small world limited our opportunities in every way, whereas today our lives are richer because we are exposed to people and ideas from everywhere.
The book is full of great tips on business strategy, as you would expect from Koch. One of the surprising things he notes is that online business is more monopolistic and concentrated than regular commerce. In search engines, for instance, there is really only Google, in online communities there is now really only Facebook. Thus the creation of such hubs, with their vast promise of wealth and influence, is the obvious goal of the entrepreneur. In such ways we can use network effects to our own advantage - but if we are not aware of network and hub theory in the first place, we are flying blind.
Many of the ideas Koch talks introduces us to are counter-intuitive, but once we own them we have a tremendous advantage.

The reader is presented with everything required to understand the concepts covered in each chapter, but I often found myself re-reading passages in order to fully understand the arguments and implications of the text. This aside, rest assured that the studious reader will find this to be a rewarding, thoughtful account of an important field of science, and I would strongly recommend this book to anyone whose work involves network analysis.Dynamical Processes on Complex Networks Overview

I've been a client of the author and familiar with his approach, but I still found the book to be a fantastic and enlightening read.
The book presents a kind of a "unified field theory" in which the author explains why typical networking usually doesn't work and often erodes business relationships, all as a predicate to offering a values-based approach that shows respect to one's current and prospective colleagues and allows networkers of different personality types, including shy people like me, to play to their strengths in a much more natural way. Having made the case for pursuing business relationships based on mutual advantage and clear strategic objectives, he then presents a step-by-step framework with cogent illustrations that bring his new way of seeing things to life.
The author has a much more realistic and mature understanding of the challenges we all face when engaging in such complex activities as looking for a job, clients, funding, or vendors than any of the many books I've read on the subject. The Frog and Prince: Secrets of Positive Networking To Change Your Life ReviewDarcy's book is terrific for pretty much everyone on the planet. Sounds, a bit much I know, but when you take into account that we all must rely to some extent on the assistance and contacts of others, then there is no better book to cover off the bases of why Networking is a crucial function to understand and master.
The style is straightforward and the content easy to grasp. There really isn't any good reason NOT to follow the concepts explained in this book.
For those of you who groan inside when you hear that you must attend a networking party, this book will surely help you overcome some of the notions you have about networking and what it can do for you. (And it isn't only relevant for business...no matter what you are involved in, having a strong supportive network can only help you.)
Of particular interest to me was the concept of approaching networking (and in a greater sense all relationships) from the perspective of how you can help others. Darcy addresses those networking types who scour a room on the prowl for only those people who can forward their own short-term aims, and rightly characterizes these folks as short-sighted. (These people also give networking a bad name for us simple folk that are only trying to help.) The idea of seeking first what you can do to assist others with their goals is reminiscent of Mr. Covey's "Seven Habits" concept of, "Seek first to understand, then be understood."
Some may think:
But what about the payoff? When will all this helping others help me? It's a shark pond out there and being nice to strangers will only be seen as a vulnerability to be taken advantage of.
If you believe this, I suggest you ask every successful person you have met if they got to where they are now by themselves. The point is, we NEED each other to do neat stuff. And there is no better way to move forward with your own goals than to willingly assist others in achieving theirs. Darcy's book outlines this very clearly and concisely, and offers a lot more useful advice as well.

Networks: An Introduction ReviewThe study of networks received much interest in recent years. This book provides an easy to read introduction covering many important topics. Hence its primary audience is probably for undergraduate students however it can serve also as reference.
In particular I like that the book focuses on many recent methods, e.g., community structures or complex network models, without forgetting past concept that have been developed either in graph theory or come from interdisciplinary research for instance from studying social networks. Also, it discusses network algorithms because only by means of these methods you can study the introduced concepts and methods numerically.
Mathematicians interested in graph theory will probably not like this book because it is not written in a typical math-style. In addition, the topic of the book is on network theory which is not exactly graph theory but comprises wider concepts (theoretically and practically).
Besides mathematician, probably everyone will like it.
I want to remark that this book is not merely a collection of published papers, but it is written as a textbook. This why the individual parts fit well to each other.
