Brief Therapy With Individuals and Couples ReviewI had to purchase this book for a graduate class in Crisis Intervention and Brief Psychotherapy. We barely touched the book in class, but I am glad that I actually took the time to read the book. I find that more and more, we are required to perform brief therapy, so that we can heal the client and keep the insurance company happy. The book shows you all sorts of approaches that you can use to help the client. The language is very simple to ready and there is no jargon that isn't understandable to deal with.Brief Therapy With Individuals and Couples Overview

Nonstop Networking: How to Improve Your Life, Luck, and Career (Capital Ideas for Business & Personal Development) ReviewI purchased this book based on the multiple 5-star reviews. Now that i have read the book,I have the following comments:
The bottom line is that this book DOES have a few good networking pointers. Unfortunately, I found that much of the book contains fairly straight-forward advice, for example things like "listen with your inner ear" when talking to others, be "caring," etc.
Also note that the book is 170 pages, but is printed in double-space and large font, and the width of many of the 5-inch wide pages is further reduced by a second 2-inch internal margin in which is printed special notes and call outs. In short, this book is a lot shorter than it lets on. I would guess its a 50 page book in standard font, single space, etc. Not that this is bad, just know what your getting when you buy it.
I don't want to be too negative however. The author deserves credit for giving good advice on how to organize contracts into certain groups to help target networking strategies. The use of gifts in maintaing one's netowrk, and several other tips on staying connected to contacts. I particularly found Chapters 7 ("Keeping your Network Alive and Growing") and 9 ("Organizing and Keeping Track of Your Network") particularly helpful. I hope there will be more of this type of advice in her next book (*See comments below).
I am still waiting for a straight-forward networking book that remains focused on techniques and strategies instead of abstact (and largely unhelpful) advice on "speaking with enthusiasm and energy." The latter type of comments, while important, can be dealt with in a single "etiquette/demeanor" chapter.
An annoying feature of this book is the "I have a friend name Charlie who..." approach to discussing the subject matter. An alarming amount of authors have now embraced the idea of introducing us to "friends" of theirs in each chapter of the book to expose the reader to different concepts. Personally, I find this method patronizing and unrealistic. It would be a lot more helpful for the author to write a chapter that starts out: "I interviewed 10 people, each of whose networking skills I admire. Their techniques had the following in common: [list]. Although, their individual styles varied in the following respects: [list]." "One method that my associate Charlie uses that I found particularly useful was ______. I personally use this technique but have modified it as follows:_________." "I was reported to me that ______ didn't work very well because _______." Etc.
Update: After I initially published this review, Ms. Nierenberg (the author) sent me an e-mail responding to my comments here on Amazon. She tactfully took issue with the "negativity" of my review. I went home and reflected on my comments and agreed with the author that my comments were too "negative." I have since amended the review above to be more constructive. I also note that Ms. Nierenberg told me that this book was intended as a starting point (a kind of "cliff notes" for networking) and that she was working on a second, more comprehensive book. I look forward to reading the second book, and I will post my review of that one as well.Nonstop Networking: How to Improve Your Life, Luck, and Career (Capital Ideas for Business & Personal Development) Overview

The Firm of the Future: A Guide for Accountants, Lawyers, and Other Professional Services ReviewI first read this book about 2 years ago. I keep it within arm's reach of my desk and refer to it often, still.
I've read one reviewer who stated that this book was the modern almanac of best business practices. I agree completely.
I run my own small law firm. We have implemented many of this book's practices with great success and profitablilty. Primary among them is fixed fee agreements. Yes, we are a law firm that has trashed its time sheets, due in large part to the inspiration and impetus of this book. And, we will never go back.
An earlier reviewer suggested that this book would be more useful for CPA's and not for lawyers. I disagree. Though I'm certain the message of this book is critical for CPA's, I think that any person in law firm leadership must read this book. I think it is particularly suited to small firms and solos who will have the ability to immediately take action in implementing these ideas and making them a reality in their practice.
However, if you are one of my competitors forget everything I said above and do not touch this book. My firm and my family will thank you.

Developing an Effective Safety Culture: A Leadership Approach ReviewOverall the text is quite good in explaining safety management concepts which are highly effective.
I believe it would make a good text for a safety management course.
The book gets into some topics that aren't needed to explain the concepts presented making the text larger than necessary. There is some redundancy of information in the way the text is structured / written.
I purchased additional copies for clients.
Definitely a worthwhile read for safety managers without a business systems background or managers needing to understand how to insert safety management aspects into an existing performance management process. A good review of some basic concepts that many fail to properly implement.

The Behavior-Based Safety Process: Managing Involvement for an Injury-Free Culture, 2nd Edition ReviewI use the book for my course in Behavioral safety at Western Michigan University, and I recommend it.Strengths: broad coverage of issues invoved in BBS; examples of it practice; some coverage of scientific principles behind the techniques.Weaknesses: It could be organized to make it more user-friendly; written at a rather advanced level; not a very good "how-to" book (T. McSween's "The Values-Based Safety Process" book is better at "how to" - I also use that one.)The Behavior-Based Safety Process: Managing Involvement for an Injury-Free Culture, 2nd Edition Overview

Molecular Biology of the Cell 3E ReviewIn graduate school for Neuroscience I had to take a class on molecular biology and biochemistry which was required of all med students whether Ph.D. or M.D. or both. We had five different teachers in the class, three of whom were foreign. Since I was the first Deaf person to take Neuroscience there, they weren't prepared for me...and I ended up taking the class without interpreters! I had to lipread the teachers. If it hadn't been for this particular textbook, I would never had made it through! I am not kidding anyone by saying this. YOu can take a class with just this textbook for information and still pass with flying colors. That is how well this text is written. For once, the book was written with the student in mind, not the peers of the authors. It was written to teach the same information that the authors had in such a way as to make it understandable. Not only did I use this text in this class but in most of my classes at med school. When I started working on HIV encephalitis in my chosen lab for two years, I was not surprised to find this book on the shelves...and we all referred to it constantly. I applaud the authors for a job well done, and if I ever write a textbook, this will be the one I use to follow as an appropriate way to write curriculum. The amount of pictures and graphs were especially great for teaching Deaf students and I intend to use it for such. Food Styling: The Art of Preparing Food for the Camera ReviewWhether you are a veteran chef, photographer etc or novice 'wanna be', this is an essential "must have" for your collection. At nearly 400 pages, this is a comprehensive undertaking that doesn't compromise quality or clarity. Here is why this is a "MUST HAVE" for anyone remotely interested in the culinary arts, food styling, photography or related trends.
1. Comprehensive. As mentioned, this is nearly 400 pages packed FULL of information. There is a balanced blend of photographs and text without one dominating the other. Instead, each enhances the other with ample detail/discussion and pertinent photos. Tone is conversational yet complete providing veteran and novice readers sufficient information to achieve desired results.
2. Beautiful Big Book. Not only is the book 400 pages but it's a large book. This is the hard cover with a clear dust jacket...complete with a "peel away" safety sheeting! Organized for ease of use, no detail is missed. Lovely Headings are bold/brightly colored for quick reference, ample charts/other make for simple comparison, excellent resource/glossary and index section. It is obvious a great deal of care went into the creation of this resource!
3. Content. Of course, any food styling book wouldn't be worth much without superb content and this is where Custer really excels. Tips and excellent information abound...from basic tidbits to in-depth discussion that can only come from years of experience, it's obvious the author is an expert in every sense of the word. I am absolutely smitten by the level of detail - combined with clarity - provided throughout. Chapter highlights include:
-Food Styling Overview
-The Medium is Everything
-Your Food Styling Teammates
-You Got the Job...Now What?
-Prepping the Assignment
-At the Shoot
-About Photography
-The Basics of Propping
-The Basics of Tv & Film Production Work
-The Food Stylists Tools of the Trade
-Working with the Food
-The Business of Food Styling
-Beyond Food Styling
-Tips for Chefs, Caterers, and Others who want to Style their Food
-Reviewing the Last Fifty/sixty years of Food styling and photography
However, within each of the above chapter are numerous sub=sections, tips, pertinent photographs, charts and much more. For example, a seemingly "mundane" topic related to the tools of the trade, we get a quick peak into the kit and set tray. We see actual examples of a simple kit set-up, the set tray, a listed photograph of each individual tool plus tips of the trade that make all the difference in a day to day setting. For example, how do you know which type of rice to cook and when? Find out on page 145!
How do you make a panini look enticing...rather than that big flat floppy thing you create in your own kitchen? Find out on page 207!
What is available when and how do you locate out of season fruits/vegies? Find out on pages 171-173!
This is just a very short sample of the incredible amount of information contained in this book. It is NOT fluff or filler...rather page after page of great information!
For those that are comparing this to the other available options, this wins hands down.
I also own Food Styling for Photographers: A Guide to Creating Your Own Appetizing Art by Linda Bellingham and Jean Ann Bybee...an excellent resource but not nearly as comprehensive or detailed as this book.
Digital Food Photography by Lou Manna is another book I own/use but it tends to focus much more on the basics of digital photography. Many of the techniques and tricks/tips are duplicates from the comprehensive book "Food Styling" by Delores Custer.
Without a doubt, this is an absolute "must have" that will be used repeatedly. A perfect companion for anyone wanting to enter the field of food styling. It assumes nothing yet provides depth and details to inspire and inform even veteran styling professionals.
Exceptional!Food Styling: The Art of Preparing Food for the Camera Overview
