Hydrogeology Field Manual, 2e ReviewGreat book with good content but I was concerned on finding several pages ripped and the binding seemingly coming apart. I don't want to go through the hassle of returning so I fixed as well as I can. The problems were located in chapter 8. Also, the author supplies an outdated email contact to request further data and a spreadsheet.Hydrogeology Field Manual, 2e Overview

Practical Bomb Scene Investigation, Second Edition (Practical Aspects of Criminal & Forensic Investigations) ReviewThe global war on terror has increased the need for post blast investigation and training. Within the United States, an ever increasing number of bomb incidents involving juveniles, enmity, drug operations, organized criminals, and traditional criminals is seeing the need for post blast investigations spread to the smallest, most remote communities. Unfortunately, access to training has become limited, as traditional sources, such as the FBI and ATF, must address budgetary constraints and their own operational needs.
At a most opportune time, CRC Press has published James T. Thurman's Practical Bomb Scene Investigation. Thurman, an associate professor at Eastern Kentucky University, is well known within the bomb response community as the retired chief of the FBI's Explosives Unit and Bomb Data Center, putting him at the forefront of bomb response, intelligence sharing, and training in the U.S. He has combined his experience, education, with an ability to write in a very readable manner to produce a valuable guide to this field.
In the U.S., the FBI, ATF, Postal Inspection Service, Department of State and other agencies teach very similar post blast investigative techniques. Thurman maintains this documenting the team approach taught by these agencies. The team includes crime scene investigators, laboratory analysts, bomb technicians, and general investigators. Much of the physical crime scene procedure will be familiar to experienced members of the criminalistic fields - photography, sketch documentation, search techniques, and evidence collection techniques. Other aspects, however, will be new - establishing the search parameters, packaging materials for explosive residues, safety aspects, etc. Thurman covers these and many more related areas in a manner which is highly informative.
Important aspects of post blast investigation include recognition of components and understanding the technology of bomb functioning. Thurman does an outstanding job of introducing the reader to explosives, components, and function. He includes much detail on the subjects, providing the previously ignorant a wealth of insight into the construction of bombs, function of explosives, and the variety of types of explosions. Thurman also introduces the reader to evidence collection at scenes where bomb technicians have rendered safe a bomb, and to the processing of sites where bombs were being assembled for use elsewhere.
One chapter examines weapons of mass destruction. Thurman's intent in this chapter is not evidence collection; entire books have been devoted to the subject. Instead, it is to introduce the responder to WMD's, with eye towards safety. An explosive may be the dissemination or triggering device for a WMD; responders need to recognize that a scene may be highly hazardous unless steps are taken to protect investigators.
The book concludes with several appendices. Some deal with standardized crime scene logs and forms. Of greater value are detailed lists of explosive materials, a cross reference of explosive antonyms, color codes for military ordnance, and a step by step guide to explosive residue swabbing.
Until the publication of this book, there had been no true text dealing with this important subject. Thurman has produced a work of great value to investigators and bomb technicians, unit libraries, and as a textbook for college and specialized training programs. At a time when training resources are shrinking, it provides an important resource giving investigators a reference for self training and operational information. In the global war on terror, it will fill an important niche.

Nature Revealed: Selected Writings, 1949-2006 ReviewThis is a superb collection of over sixty original scientific papers, book extracts and other articles by Ed Wilson, one of the all-time great scientists. Each article is placed into historical context with a new introduction by Wilson. Organized by major theme area rather than chronologically, the book illustrates how Wilson's grander biological theories have been underpinned by a deep, relentless inquisitiveness. Wilson's fascination with the diversity of nature in general and ants in particular really shines through. The production quality of the book is excellent. Even at the full retail price the book is a bargain; the currently discounted Amazon price is astounding. This book is well worth buying even if you have most of the original papers.Nature Revealed: Selected Writings, 1949-2006 Overview

Lab Coats in Hollywood: Science, Scientists, and Cinema ReviewScience fiction movies have come a long way since _The Deadly Mantis_ or _Cat Women of the Moon_. Even in the fifties, of course, there were movies that did as good a job as the times allowed to show science and scientists. With the help of the superbly realistic visual effects we have had over the past couple of decades, the capacity for accurate depictions of science has increased, and so, too, has the interest of filmmakers who want to do such depictions right. Since film directors and producers are not scientists themselves, they hire out to get advice. Sometimes the results are good for the movie and also good for science, and sometimes not. Science consultation in the movies is the wonderful subject of _Lab Coats in Hollywood: Science, Scientists, and Cinema_ (The MIT Press) by David A. Kirby. Kirby is nicely positioned to write such a book; he was a practicing evolutionary geneticist before becoming a lecturer in science communication studies. And he obviously loves movies. The book reveals the surprising ways in which science has shaped movies, and even more surprisingly vice versa.
Kirby starts on a high note, looking at Stanley Kubrick's _2001: A Space Odyssey_, which he says is "the most scientifically accurate film ever made for its time." _2001_ is, of course, mostly about space flight and exploration in the future, and had its share of NASA consultants, but don't forget the "Dawn of Man" sequence; Kubrick got advice from the father-and-son anthropological team Louis and Richard Leakey. Consultants can make movies better by fact checking, or by advising on the look of tools and lab spaces. Consultants can increase the scientific plausibility of the movie, and if the plausibility is up, suspension of disbelief is maintained, and the audience is drawn in. It doesn't hurt that scientists in the audience of an accurate film won't be picking at it. Next to _2001_, the book pays the most attention to the _Jurassic Park_ movies, for many good reasons. Not only did paleontologist Jack Horner, who was involved in many aspects of the movie, get grants and fees, but he also got to influence the movie to show his own ideas about how birds are the descendants of dinosaurs, for instance. There are sometimes problems because a scene that is scientifically accurate might be cinematically boring. Sometimes there are problems because scientific accuracy clashes with an audience's view of the way things are supposed to be. The 2000 movie _Mission to Mars_ had plenty of scenes on "The Red Planet," but we know from the rovers that it is actually a yellow-brown. In the movie, the geology has a red tinge; scientific accuracy would have made things look less plausible. There are many movies cited here that have used good science to promote public understanding and intelligent debate on contentious issues. _The China Syndrome_ was well researched and its questions about the safety of nuclear power still linger. _Armageddon_ and _Deep Impact_, both released in 1998, made people think about what might be done if we see that asteroid or comet headed to wipe us out (although _Armageddon_ showed deep flaws in its science, as described here).
Kirby's book shows how products of the future might be introduced in a movie; the interfacing by gestures with the computer, as used by the detective in _Minority Report_, was an imaginary prototype suggested by one scientific advisor who has gone on to make physical prototypes of such an interface. Kirby shows how scientists are often thrilled to work on a picture with famous people from Hollywood, and frequently do so without pay. He also shows a big disadvantage: if the scientist needs to be on set or on call, it's a good bet that this will be an impossible schedule for an academic, field, or commercially-employed scientist, so maybe one that just got a degree would be hired, for all the problems that might cause. One of the important themes here is that scientists and filmmakers are increasingly acknowledging the importance of their close connection; the National Academy of Sciences' Science & Entertainment Exchange program, for instance, wants to increase the involvement of scientists in the filmmaking process. Kirby knows plenty of the personalities involved here, and obviously has watched the movies carefully. He has given many detailed descriptions of scientific and cinematic work, and his brightly-written book ought to be enjoyed by anyone interested in either subject.

Modern Instrumentation for Scientists and Engineers ReviewThis is the textbook used for our Bioinstrumentation class. While half of this book did not even apply for us bioengineers, the other half that we actually used was overall well-written and easy-to-follow.
First off, by 'discussion of theory' in the subject line, I refer to the fact that mathematical derivations are everywhere. If you would like a discussion of modern instrumentation without as many alphas, betas, and thetas, I suggest you stop here and look elsewhere. Otherwise, for the rest of you guys who aren't intimidated by all the Greek, this book does a good job of following the equations and explaining derivations of everything from gain levels to stress-resistance relationships in strain gages.
My reservations lie in the fact that the book does not offer as much of any applications or case studies. Personally, I like the fact that the book dedicates chapters to studying photosensors, strain gages, amplifiers, so on, so forth. But all that is nothing if you can't apply that to some actual complicated piece of modern equipment. Being able to know the basics is one thing, but with this book being titled "Modern Instrumentation for... Engineers", you'd have to expect more talk on MRI circuitry, laser printer design, etc.
And then of course, the amount of derivations in this book can be its own undoing sometimes. But nevertheless, it's a great book for reference in an instrumentation class, or for those wannabe-electrical engineers...Modern Instrumentation for Scientists and Engineers Overview

From Molecules to Networks, Second Edition: An Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience ReviewOverall, I was really pleased with this textbook. I originally ordered it as reference material for a computational neuroscience project, and it didn't disappoint. It covers pretty much all the relevant areas of molecular neuroscience, including ion channels and gates, properties of membranes, neurotransmission/modulation, receptors and protein configurations, genetic processes, neural circuits - even pathological information related to neurodegenerative diseases as an added bonus. It has a number of sections and a chapter dedicated to quantitative analysis, as well as touching on the use of NEURON or other software packages, which made it a great resource for my project.
I think one of the reasons the text really does well is each section is written by leading experts in the field. The chapter dealing with LTP and NMDA dependent Hebbian plasticity is written (amongst others) by Kevin LeBar and Joseph LeDoux, ion channels by David Young, Yuh Nung Jan, and Lily Yeh Jan, and is edited by John H Byrne and James L Roberts with lots of material in each chapter by them as well.
The second edition is very current, and contains a lot of information that generally isn't available on the web, with specifics from medical and science journals. Great stuff. From Molecules to Networks, Second Edition: An Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience Overview

Psychology in Action ReviewAn excellent textbook that helps global as well as analytical learners by providing both written information as well as a wealth of charts and pictures.
I used this for my General Psychology Class. It was probably one of the first textbooks I used that I could understand, being that I learn by looking at pictures rather than reading. It helped me. It covers Psychology generally and doesn't focus on any one disorder in particular, so there are a lot of disorders listed and a good amount of information on each, but they are not explored in depth, you'd need a textbook or book especially for say Depression, in order to get the most information on it. But it does a good job for what it is.
I hope this review helped you. :)Psychology in Action Overview

Matter and Interactions ReviewThe greatest advantage in using this book is that it tries to do highly standardised topics (Electromagnetism and Mechanics) in a non-standard way. This is ambitious indeed and the book occasionally falls short. But, there are many excellent things about this book:
1) It always lays a great emphasis on fundamental principles and spends a good portion of the book elucidating them. The sections on the electric and magnetic fields, Gauss' law and Faraday's law are very well done and the physics is well emphasised instead of teaching the process of carrying out mere calculations. Having said that, the level of rigour could and should be more.
2) There are a couple of chapters on circuits and circuit elements which connect the theory done so far with practical applications such as RC circuits, AC and DC.
One of the minor criticisms I have regarding this book is that it does not cover Electromagnetic radiation in sufficient detail. There are far too many topics in too short a space. This is a slight flaw in an excellent and innovative textbook.Matter and Interactions Overview

Introduction to Computational Science: Modeling and Simulation for the Sciences ReviewI enjoyed reading this book very much.
I found the book very useful in its conceptualization of simulation as a new form of synthesis for acquiring knowledge and helping human being make decisions. Simulation is a form of communication in that empirically-based models could be used to view the on-going processes that are cognitively beyond the capacity of human mind to untangle.
Furthermore, I found it admirable that the authors had instructed the readers in the art of model building using widely available simulation tools or even tools such as MS Excel that are not built specifically for the purpose of simulations.
I especially liked the tutorials with their wide selection of interesting material.
Regrettably, the subject matter of the book - simulation & (dynamic model building) - does not fit well within the traditional physics curriculum: Mechanics, Electromagnetism, and Quantum Mechanics. Numerical methods, including simulations, are not emphasized in such courses and normally one spends much of one's time studying well-known and solvable (in closed, analytical form) problems.
That does not mean that there is no room in physics for modeling and simulation: fractals, galaxy formation, dynamics of globular clusters, etc. are all areas that we are dependent on our numerical models and their fitness to observed phenomena to understand the processes of Nature. However, these are usually advanced topics not covered in undergraduate curricula.
And then the physicists tend to want to build their own tools rather that use COTS packages.
I think it is difficult to find a home in traditional university departments for a course on simulation based on this book. The fundamental reason, in my opinion, is that the personal computer as a scientific instrument is not valued or appreciated. And from that follows the lack of interest in simulations as venues for gaining scientific knowledge in Physics, in Chemistry & Biology. Conceivably a course in simulations might be of interest to engineers but then we would be leaving all those "soft"-science majors such as Ecology or Public Health behind. And those soft-science students are among some the people who could benefit the most from this book.
For example, the geneproteinenzyme interactions, with their feedback loops and multiple pathways, are so complex that no human mind could expect to grasp all that goes on inside a cell. So Module 6.3 covering enzyme dynamics is absolutely on the right track from a scientific perspective; taking simulation out of the "hard" science world and into biology. Only through simulations and modeling are we going to develop a synthetic understanding of the cell in all its complexity.
I do not know if you have seen the book, "Historical Dynamics" by Peter Turchin in which he presents and discusses mathematical models of the evolution of agrarian states on the Eurasian land mass. His models are informed by empirical data collected from historical sources and do capture many aspects of historical reality. There is clearly a very important paradigm here at work but which is not as enunciated as I believe it should be; namely that simulations extend our scientific evidentiary-based knowledge into hitherto for dark realms of empirical experience.
Yet, Turchin did not use a simulation tool; he rolled his own and wrote much of his code in APL (A Programming Language) which is quite obscure. So readers must redo the models themselves. And his book is not about simulations, it is about what simulations tell us about history. I think that there are many fields of study in which the students could benefit from parts of this book; history, sociology, ecology, and natural resources comes to mind. There the exposition must be based heavily on using Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) packages to tech the students how to build useful models.
So, for students in "soft" departments, the material in modules 5.2, 5.3, 5.4 could be skipped. In fact, even for students of physics and engineering, the understanding of the basis of the numerical simulations is not as important as learning how to build a system and observing how it behaves. On the other hand, the module 2, in my opinion, is important for all students to understand and to master so that they may interpret the results of their simulations correctly.
In my own case, I would love to be able to use a COTS package in which I could put galaxies - using a visual palette tool - on a 3-dimensional grid and observe their evolution in time as I changed the metric of space-time and/or the equation of state of the matter field.
Or consider the equations of stellar evolution, one would love to be able to run them again and again by changing parameters of these models knowing that the fundamental equations and their integration were worked out 70 years ago. As it is today, there are no such user-friendly generic approaches available to students or researchers, all such things must be painfully hand-crafted almost from scratch, barring some software libraries.
On a few occasions that I imagined writing such a book myself, I realized how difficult it was to do justice to the breadth and depth of the field of simulations from its hard-core physical scieces and engineering to ecology and wild-life management in a single book. While I might quibble with the inclusion of this or that topic or technique, I really cannot come up with a better design. There is an enormous amount of material here that may or may not be of interest to all audiences but there is a lot of material that is of interest to special audiences with focus on this or that scientific field.
The authors, if I understand them correctly, are positing that simulations (Computational Sciences) are a new way of knowledge discovery. In this they are right, in my opinion and are in the company of such luminaries as Dr. Steven Wolfram of Mathematic fame. But the problem is that "Introduction to Simulations" used to be taught in Industrial Engineering departments and then moved to places like the RAND Corporation and then the Pentagon. It is not viewed as a subject worthy of study in its own right (although such simulations as Halo or the World of War Craft sell millions of copies and make a few people wuite wealthy).
Which brings me to another topic related to simulations and to this book; namely computer games. Computer games are also simulations but with the caveat that they do not follow the Laws of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and therefore are on somewhat of a tangent to "scientific" simulations such as those covered in this book. Gamers perform simulations, cosmologists do simulations, climatologists do simulations, agronomists do simulations, and many others but there is not set curriculum, no defined or unified approach and indeed no place to go to get an introduction to the art and science of simulation in a typical undergraduate college. This book is an attempt at just that.
I think non-science majors in Liberal Arts colleges could benefit also from a simulation course based on this book. Some colleges have a unified natural science department without the traditional divisions among Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. In such an environment, a course based on this book may offer that the non-science majors - a la Turchin's approach - the prospect of gaining confidence in building quantitative models of Reality and making inferences about the world on basis of such models.
This is a good book and a path-breaking book and I hope it finds the traction that it so righty deserves.

In Pursuit of the Traveling Salesman: Mathematics at the Limits of Computation ReviewThe Traveling Salesman Problem is remarkable easy to state: given a set of points with distances between them, find the shortest tour through all the points. Despite its simple statement, the problem of finding good or optimal tours has generated thousands of research papers. The TSP is the standard testbed for discrete optimization: practically every possible approach to optimization can be tried out on the TSP. So research on the TSP has had a tremendous effect on approaches for all sorts of other optimization problems. This paper covers every aspect of this research corpus.
The author is the world's expert on this topic, and is clearly enraptured with this problem. His affection shows through his naming of his favorite heuristic, favorite computational model, and more. The book is wide-ranging and thorough and is written in a consistently engaging, conversational style, even when going very deep into the research literature.
This is not a research book, but it is a book about research. Through the TSP, Cook describes how research is done in a wide variety of subfields. The book requires some concentration but is accessible to any mathematically-inclined college student or bright high school student. For many, it will inspire further interest in algorithms and research. In Pursuit of the Traveling Salesman: Mathematics at the Limits of Computation Overview

Molecular Biology of the Cell 3E ReviewIn graduate school for Neuroscience I had to take a class on molecular biology and biochemistry which was required of all med students whether Ph.D. or M.D. or both. We had five different teachers in the class, three of whom were foreign. Since I was the first Deaf person to take Neuroscience there, they weren't prepared for me...and I ended up taking the class without interpreters! I had to lipread the teachers. If it hadn't been for this particular textbook, I would never had made it through! I am not kidding anyone by saying this. YOu can take a class with just this textbook for information and still pass with flying colors. That is how well this text is written. For once, the book was written with the student in mind, not the peers of the authors. It was written to teach the same information that the authors had in such a way as to make it understandable. Not only did I use this text in this class but in most of my classes at med school. When I started working on HIV encephalitis in my chosen lab for two years, I was not surprised to find this book on the shelves...and we all referred to it constantly. I applaud the authors for a job well done, and if I ever write a textbook, this will be the one I use to follow as an appropriate way to write curriculum. The amount of pictures and graphs were especially great for teaching Deaf students and I intend to use it for such. Fascinating Mathematical People: Interviews and Memoirs ReviewThis book is a series of interviews of several of the leading lights in mathematics over approximately the last half century. While most interviewees were prompted to give some details of their personal lives, the bulk of the conversation concerns their role in mathematics and how they personally view the discipline. A large percentage of the more interesting factoids were uttered by the women mathematicians, all were old enough to have "grown up" mathematically at a time when women faced systemic gender bias. Most of the interviews were originally published in journals and there are many photos.
The people interviewed are:
*) Lars V. Ahlfors
*) Tom Apostol
*) Harold M. Bacon
*) Tom Banchoff
*) Leon Bankoff
*) Alice Beckenbach
*) Arthur Benjamin
*) Dame Mary L. Cartwright
*) Joe Gallian
*) Richard K. Guy
*) Fern Hunt
*) Dusa McDuff
*) Donald G. Saari
*) Atle Selberg
*) Jean Taylor
*) Philippe Tondeur
There is a great deal about the philosophy of mathematics and the role it plays in science and society, some recapitulation of past success and lot about the role family members can and do play. To a large segment of the American population, mathematicians are perceived as being outside the norm. In some ways that is true, but in this book it is clear that they are first and foremost people that encounter and deal with the same problems that everyone else does.

Gray's Anatomy: The Anatomical Basis of Clinical Practice, Expert Consult - Online and Print, 40e ReviewGray's Anatomy, first published in 1858, is thought by the average layman to be merely a historical classic, and is usually purchased as a paperback reprint of the 1905 version.
If you want the most up-to-date description of human anatomy, steer clear of the paperbacks and buy the 38th edition in hardback. It costs a lot more, but it is more than worth it. It contains an amazing amount of technical information that has only been discovered in the last ten or twenty years (such as the spiral architecture of the heart, MRI imagery, and details of microbiology and cellur arcitecture). It even contains a nice summary of the history of the universe. If I had the rest of my life (I'm a 35-year old engineer) to do nothing but read this book, I could not come close to absorbing all knowledge it contains.
I firmly believe that this is the most important book I own.
I recommend this book highly to anyone who wishes to learn more about the marvelous machine that is the human body.Gray's Anatomy: The Anatomical Basis of Clinical Practice, Expert Consult - Online and Print, 40e Overview

Biochemistry (BIOCHEMISTRY (VOET)) ReviewBefore you buy this book, you must carefully ask yourself what purpose you intend to use this for. As a textbook it is horrible, but will serve you well as reference material. V&V was inflicted upon me by my professor in my single-semester graduate level biochemistry course (I am a first year student working towards a PhD in Molecular Biology). The course was structured so that we were tested once a month on about 8-12 chapters of this book. Therefore, I did not have much time to dwell for very long on each chapter and was tested in significantly less detail than what was presented in the text. The problem, as others have stated, was that the author goes into excruciating detail for each component of the chapter and then fails to state exactly why it is important. For example, the text will spend two pages describing exactly how many beta sheets and alpha helixes an enzyme has, its folding substructures, the critical amino acid residues in the active sites, and what substrate analogs researchers used to elucidate the enzyme's function. Somewhere buried in that mess will be a few words on why the enzyme is related or important to the topic of the chapter. For most people, you will never ever need to know 95% of this material unless you are personally involved in research directly related to this topic. Otherwise you would be a complete fool to waste so much time memorizing the intimate details of all the proteins and molecules. Unfortunately with this text, the nitty-gritty details are not placed aside from the main points so that you can skip over them when need be. Instead you are forced to wade through the endless morass of minutia to find the few hidden gems of general principles.Biochemistry (BIOCHEMISTRY (VOET)) Overview

Fundamentals of Forensic Science, Second Edition ReviewAttention to detail is important in almost all areas of endeavor, but especially so in forensic science. This book violates that fundamental in the first chapter. In describing the trial of Theodore Robert Bundy for the Chi Omega Sorority murders, it refers to the testimony of a certain forensic odontologist, and says that as a result of the testimony of the forensic odonotologist, Bundy was executed. This is incorrect. Bundy was not executed for the Chi Omega murders, but for the subsequent murder of a young girl. Forensic science figured prominently in that conviction also, but it was microanalysis and shoetrack comparison, not forensic odontology, that was instrumental in sending Bundy to the electric chair.
As to the circumstances of the odontological evidence at the Chi Omega trial, the book is again in error on its details. It says a plaster cast was made of a bite mark on one of the victims. The plaster cast was taken of Bundy's teeth, not of the bite mark. The bite mark was photographed.
What was accurate about the account of the Chi Omega trial was that Bundy was convicted and that forensic odontology played a role in the conviction and little else.Fundamentals of Forensic Science, Second Edition Overview
