It is written well enough that a person with a technical background can read it once in most cases, and then be able to apply its methods to solve problems. (I recommend Stephen Rosen's text for that job.) MacOsko provides a relatively pain-free introduction to tensors and then proceeds to apply tensor analysis to a variety of rheological topics. If your work doesn't require rigorous tensor analysis, or if you're new to the field, avoid the book. The Colloidal Domain: Where Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Technology Meet (Advances in Interfacial Engineering) ReviewThe Colloidal Domain by Evans and Wennerstrom is a comprehensive guided tour into the realm of colloidal behavior. Every chapter opens with a summary of key concepts (concept map) that one must commit oneself to learn through the development, through theory and examples, presented in that chapter. The authors have chosen to title every sub-section with a sentence or a phrase that summarizes the ideas developed and demonstrated there. The text is written in a style that makes it an excellent textbook for use in both undergraduate and graduate classes.
The typical examples come from the field of surfactants, from the behavior of bilayers and micelles. Hence the text first describes the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules, introducing key thermodynamic principles that guide it, including the role of surfaces and surface tension; and the kinetic processes that control it. These concepts come handy later when the behavior of micelles, bilayers and emulsions in general is discussed. I really enjoyed the chapter on forces relevant to the colloidal domain, which presents the essential expressions and concepts in a very useful and concise fashion. The development on forces in colloids paves way for equally illustrative discussion of the phase behavior and the kinetic and thermodynamic factors that contribute to the stability of colloids. In this context, Gouy-Chapman theory, Debye-Huckel theory and DLVO theory, are presented, and role of dissolved ions and polymers is demonstrated in a very insightful fashion.
I recommend the text on Colloidal Dispersions by Russel, Saville and Schowalter to readers interested in learning more about colloidal dispersions based on particulate matter, and the text by Morrison & Ross for them who have more interest in foams. Most soft matter texts (say by Hamley, or R. A. L. Jones or Ron Larson) include discussion on colloidal dispersions, and one may wish to consult them to see how the knowledge of colloidal behavior provides good starting point for learning about polymers, gels and liquid crystals.
I highly recommend this textbook for beginners, teachers, students and researchers. I hope more and more texts will follow this text in its lucid and comprehensive presentation of fundamental concepts.The Colloidal Domain: Where Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Technology Meet (Advances in Interfacial Engineering) Overview

Modern Physical Organic Chemistry ReviewPhys. Org. Chem. has always been one of my favorite subjects. As I continued to study chemistry during high school, college and grad school, I began to realise that phys org chem represents not so much a separate field as a philosophy and approach; to treat chemical and biological systems from the perspective of structure, conformation, and reactivity which are after all the most fundamental aspects of any such system. I realized that phys org chem is a truly interdisciplinary framework, and any one who has a solid background in it can be a good computational chemist, synthetic organic chemist, and/or bioorganic/biochemist.
Unfortunately, all the classic phys org books until now have been of the 'pure' kind, focusing on mechanism and reactivity, but not discussing the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, especially for biological systems and materials. The wait is over: Modern Physical Organic Chemistry by Dennis Dougherty and Eric Anslyn has completely and satisfactorily reinvented the phys org chem textbook. Now one can look to a wholesome treatment of phys org as a multidisciplinary, fundamental, and exciting approach to both chemistry and biology. The book is worth its price, and covers the gamut of topics, including basic ones like mechanisms and bonding, but also is interspersed with lots of boxes and discussions explaining the applications of basic phys org concepts to host guest systems, proteins and nucleic acids, strained molecules, and materials science. Fantastic reference. It should make you a well-rounded chemist, which is a requirement in today's era of interdisciplinary and collaborative research.Modern Physical Organic Chemistry Overview

Polymer Physics (Chemistry) ReviewPolymer Physics by Michael Rubinstein and Raplh Colby is a fascinating introduction to the realm of polymer statics, dynamics and phase behavior. It embodies the depth of Flory's classic text on Principals of Polymer Chemistry, classic delight of de Gennes' Scaling concepts in Polymers and the rigor of Theory of Polymer Dynamics by Doi and Edwards. The authors manage to do this with a textbook authority and clarity, which definitely makes this book a definite buy for anyone interested in polymer physics.
The book has four main sections. The first part talks about the polymer statics: ideal and real chains and how their size and size dependent properties are characterized. Then comes thermodynamics of polymer blends and solutions, which includes a discussion on polymer brushes and adsorption of chains. The authors devote the third section to networks and gels and this part includes a very thorough discussion of gelation, rubber elasticity and swelling. The last section is devoted to the polymer dyanmics, where chain models and polymer relaxation ideas are developed and discussed. The last two sections of the book cover topics which are of immense current interest, and have had original and critical contributions from the authors.
