Modern Instrumentation for Scientists and Engineers ReviewThis is the textbook used for our Bioinstrumentation class. While half of this book did not even apply for us bioengineers, the other half that we actually used was overall well-written and easy-to-follow.
First off, by 'discussion of theory' in the subject line, I refer to the fact that mathematical derivations are everywhere. If you would like a discussion of modern instrumentation without as many alphas, betas, and thetas, I suggest you stop here and look elsewhere. Otherwise, for the rest of you guys who aren't intimidated by all the Greek, this book does a good job of following the equations and explaining derivations of everything from gain levels to stress-resistance relationships in strain gages.
My reservations lie in the fact that the book does not offer as much of any applications or case studies. Personally, I like the fact that the book dedicates chapters to studying photosensors, strain gages, amplifiers, so on, so forth. But all that is nothing if you can't apply that to some actual complicated piece of modern equipment. Being able to know the basics is one thing, but with this book being titled "Modern Instrumentation for... Engineers", you'd have to expect more talk on MRI circuitry, laser printer design, etc.
And then of course, the amount of derivations in this book can be its own undoing sometimes. But nevertheless, it's a great book for reference in an instrumentation class, or for those wannabe-electrical engineers...Modern Instrumentation for Scientists and Engineers Overview

The New Edge in Knowledge: How Knowledge Management Is Changing the Way We Do Business ReviewThis book breaks down the core strategic issues in managing intellectual capital. It's basically a road map to build, or retrofit, an enterprise KM program. The examples from Accenture, ConocoPhillips, Fluor, IBM, MITRE, Petrobras, Schlumberger, the U.S. Department of State & others are great for building a business case when your own organization doesn't have their own--yet. The discussion is broken down into 11 chapters:
-Chapter 1 details KM program objectives, new forces affecting KM , and a framework for KM program design efforts.
-Chapter 2 explains how to ID critical knowledge and map that knowledge.
-Chapter 3 shows how to build a business case and how a KM program matures.
-Chapter 4 describes the primary categories of KM approaches and how to create a portfolio of approaches.
-Chapter 5 examines proven approaches such as communities of practices.
-Chapter 6 examines Web 2.0 tools as KM approaches.
-Chapter 7 further dives into Web 2.0 tools by focusing on *enterprise* social networking.
-Chapter 8 lays out the people infrastructure for an enterprise KM program.
-Chapter 9 focuses on people issues and executive involvement.
-Chapter 10 explains how to address measurement needs based on your program's maturity.
-Chapter 11 breaks down the guiding principles for your KM program to improve.
-A very lengthy appendix chronicles four companies with outstanding KM programs.
THis is a manageable read about a topic that need not be as convoluted/theoretical as other books have suggested.

How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of Intangibles in Business ReviewSome things are easy to measure. Time, money, exercise, calories, location - all of these are relatively straightforward to repeatably determine or calculate.
But how does one go about measuring happiness? What about compassion, or public influence, or creativity? These are more intangible, harder to pin down to a number that means anything.
Douglas Hubbard has written an impressive work called "How To Measure Anything: Finding the Value of Intangibles in Business."
While it's written primarily for business people, the lessons transfer smoothly to self-experimenters. Hubbard begins with a compelling case for why to measure intangibles:
"Often, an important decision requires better knowledge of the alleged intangible, but when a [person] believes something to be immeasurable, attempts to measure it will not even be considered.
As a result, decisions are less informed than they could be. The chance of error increases. Resources are misallocated, good ideas are rejected, and bad ideas are accepted. Money is wasted. In some cases life and health are put in jeopardy. The belief that some things--even very important things--might be impossible to measure is sand in the gears of the entire economy.
Any important decision maker could benefit from learning that anything they really need to know is measurable."
He goes on to explain in detail how to measure intangibles, including sections on how to clarify problems, calibrate estimates, measure risk, sample reality, and use Bayesian statistics to add to available knowledge. He also describes his Applied Information Economics (AIE) Approach that ties together several threads of his ideas:
"The AIE approach addresses four things:
1. How to model a current state of uncertainty
2. How to compute what else should be measured
3. How to measure those things in a way that is economically justified
4. How to make a decision"
I'm working my way through the book, and am incredibly grateful to Douglas Hubbard for writing it.How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of Intangibles in Business Overview
