The Reproduction of Colour (The Wiley-IS&T Series in Imaging Science and Technology) ReviewThe author has an impressive array of initials after his name; he is, amongst other things, a Doctor of Science, a Member of the Imperial College, an Associate of the Royal College of Science, and a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society as well as a Visiting Professor of Physiological Optics and of Colour Science, and a former Assistant Director of Research at Kodak. He has also been Chairman of the Colorimetry Committee of the International Commision on Illumination, and Chairman of the International Colour Association.
First published in 1957 and now in its much enhanced 5th edition, The Reproduction of Colour is the most comprehensive single resource available. Two quotes from the preface to the 5th edition describe what it is about:
"The object (is to present) the fundamental principles of colour reproduction, whether by photography, television, or printing in the hopes that all those engaged in producing, selling, buying, or using colour pictures will be able to see the nature of the problems they encounter. Those who want a general statement on colour reproduction will find it in the first part, and those who want a more detailed discussion of any one application in which they are particularly interested (will find it) in the later parts." and "The reproduction of colour involves physiology, psychology, physics, chemistry, and technology. presents complexities, (and) involves a wide variety of enterprises". Even though there are individuals skilled in processing and printing their own color film, and DTP bureaux had taken over some of the work of traditional printing houses, color reproduction was, until not so long ago, the province of technicians in the photographic, printing, and television industries, Now we have crossed the threshold of a new era in which a massive technology transfer is taking place, putting effective control over color into the hands of a much wider range of users. Even home users now have available to them very powerful tools that enable production of images that are, to the ordinary eye, indistinguishable from quality photographic prints.
That brings with it a need to understand the technology of color reproduction, and the definitive text is Dr Hunt's book. I have rated it 10/10 because of the remarkably wide range of disciplines covered and its astounding technical depth. Without it most of the information presented would have to be gleaned from numerous other books, professional journals, and published papers. Further, one does not have to have a scientific background to gain some understanding of what is involved in the reproduction of color. The fields covered television, photography, and printing are becoming less discrete with the application of digital technology; those who use computerized systems for the reproduction of color images will find relevant information spread throughout most parts of this book.
It is not a popular account, a color-for-cretins guide, or a how-to manual. This is a technical resource written in a style that makes it readable without diluting its professional integrity. Not all readers will need, or even want, to know the chemical structure of cyclic methylene magneta couplers, but may want information about the effects of signal processing on color reproduction. In what other recently published text would one find a comparison table of film speeds that includes the Weston system?
The Reproduction of Colour should be in any library with holdings on technical subjects; professionals in DTP, printing, photolabs, television, and digital imaging should have it; and anyone teaching or studying graphic arts, computer science, photography, printing, or subjects related to television technology should be aware of this edition. A check of some large libraries suggests that librarians may think earlier editions are good enough, but new developments demand this latest edition. Teachers of science in sub-tertiary institutions may well find this a useful text for its practical application of science to topical real-life problems.
The book is divided into parts: Fundamentals, Color Photography, Color Television, Color Printing, and Evaluating Color Appearance. Each chapter opens with an introduction that provides a succinct overview of the topic. Standard Handbook of Electronic Engineering, Fifth Edition with CD-ROM ReviewThis edition of the "Standard Handbook of Electronic Engineering" is the most comprehensive, authoritative reference you will find in the shelves.
This book has all the information you will ever need on Electronic Engineering and related fields. Each topics was written by foremost authorities in their respective fields, limiting mathematical derivation in favor of useful bottom line expressions, stressing references hat are broadly informative rather than those that may be to arcane. The resulting work is intended to be practical rather than tutorial. Nevertheless, while applications and cost considerations are emphasized throughout, theory is included when is deemed to be helpful to comprehension.
This handbook will be useful to a wide range of readers, from undergraduate electrical and computer engineering students, to new graduates and experienced practitioners. Anyone who need quick access to a definition, mathematical expression, or like in my case, any working engineer who may need access to application information related to problems you may be experiencing, or to a new project you think you may be assigned to.
Definitively a must have for anyone related to the field of electronic, electrical or computer engineering. I am an Electronics Engineer, and I has been an industrial practitioner working for the last 16 years in the process industries. I have found this handbook, and its previous versions to be really useful many times.
As an invaluable bonus, you get the CD-ROM which includes 200+ extra pages of in-depth reference and archival materialStandard Handbook of Electronic Engineering, Fifth Edition with CD-ROM Overview

Modern Instrumentation for Scientists and Engineers ReviewThis is the textbook used for our Bioinstrumentation class. While half of this book did not even apply for us bioengineers, the other half that we actually used was overall well-written and easy-to-follow.
First off, by 'discussion of theory' in the subject line, I refer to the fact that mathematical derivations are everywhere. If you would like a discussion of modern instrumentation without as many alphas, betas, and thetas, I suggest you stop here and look elsewhere. Otherwise, for the rest of you guys who aren't intimidated by all the Greek, this book does a good job of following the equations and explaining derivations of everything from gain levels to stress-resistance relationships in strain gages.
My reservations lie in the fact that the book does not offer as much of any applications or case studies. Personally, I like the fact that the book dedicates chapters to studying photosensors, strain gages, amplifiers, so on, so forth. But all that is nothing if you can't apply that to some actual complicated piece of modern equipment. Being able to know the basics is one thing, but with this book being titled "Modern Instrumentation for... Engineers", you'd have to expect more talk on MRI circuitry, laser printer design, etc.
And then of course, the amount of derivations in this book can be its own undoing sometimes. But nevertheless, it's a great book for reference in an instrumentation class, or for those wannabe-electrical engineers...Modern Instrumentation for Scientists and Engineers Overview

CompTIA CTT+ Certified Technical Trainer All-in-One Exam Guide ReviewVery good book if you have the time. But the questions covers only 30 %. I was lucky to use Pass4Sure questions in conjunction because the other 30 % questions were from it. But there were 40 % new questions and theoretical grounding of the book helps in answering them. However, there are too many educational theories in the book that are never asked in the exams.CompTIA CTT+ Certified Technical Trainer All-in-One Exam Guide Overview

The Stock Market Course ReviewGreat idea for a book, but poor execution. The idea is to introduce novices to the stock market and teach them all the fundamentals. But this book is so poorly organized and biased that novices will be only confused, and more knowledgeable investors disappointed. The authors are the sponsors of a web service for options traders, and they never fail to recommend their service. The book is biased toward options trading, technical analysis, momentum trading, and chart analysis: not strategies for beginners.
The organization is extremely confusing, seemingly random, and with lots of repetition. For example, the chapter on option trading comes before the chapters on market analysis. At the end of each chapter there is a summary of the main points of the chapter; great idea, but the only problem is that the chapter summaries do not accurately reflect the chapter contents. For example, the chapter summary for "fundamental analysis" lists the PEG ratio as a key point of the chapter, but the chapter doesn't even mention the PEG ratio! PEG ratio isn't mentioned until a later chapter on "analyzing company reports." In that chapter(p. 237-8), the authors suggest that a P/E ratio of 143(!) is quite acceptable for a growth stock (EMC corp) and that a stock with such a P/E would make a good investment!! EMC Corp. fell from $101 in 2000 to $4 in 2002. It's trading now around $10, with a P/E of 21 (July 2006). On a similar note, Enron is described as a "green" or environmentally friendly stock.
Even worse, the book presents no coherent program for investing in stocks, just a bunch of random, often contradictory advice. It turns out that all the indicators for avoiding a stock are also good indicators for buying the stock if you are a "contrarian" investor. Hardly a coherent trading program for novices. The Stock Market Course Overview
