The ASTD Training and Development Handbook: A Guide to Human Resource Development ReviewThe Handbook is arranged to cover almost all aspects of Training & Development. The topics are carefully selected and their authors picked from among the top names in their respective fields and therefore, the chapters are focused, targeted and provide the right mix of information and practical guidelines.
Each chapter addresses a single topic (like corporate universities, customer service training, leadership development, etc.) and is written in a straight-forward manner at the right depth making them easy to read and the perfect introduction to the topic without losing it's functionality as a reference.
No T&D professional should go without this book whether as a reference and a quick source of information when memory will just not oblige or an informative and valuable resource for information and ideas.
The Handbook is divided into 5 Sections:
1) The Training & development Function - Covering such topics as the learning organization, history of training and cost accounting for training.
2) Program Design & Development - The chapters on ISD; HPT; Adult Learning; & Evaluation are brilliantly written. I keep on going back to them again and again.
3) Media & methods - Includes some good case studies as well as Thiagi's excellent chapter on instructional games.
4) Training Applications - This is a brilliant discussion of almost all training topics that you might come across.
5) Resources - While these might be a little dated, they are still quite useful.
Check the table of Contents and some of the samples in the pages so obligingly provided by Amazon.com and don't be deterred by the length or the price of the book. Developing Writing Skills in Chinese ReviewThe official amazon description of this book is accurate: this is a very practical guide for the post-intermediate learner of Chinese. I'm certain it would make a great textbook, but I'm using it more as a reference tool. The chapters on business correspondence, personal letters, formal letters, and announcements and small ads have been particularly useful to me so far. Each chapter is focused and provides an ample supply of useful vocabulary for each writing goal. Another nice thing about the book is that all grammar points are very well explained and answers to nearly all exercises are in the back.
Unfortunately, the first chapter of the book, "Cards," makes the book seem boring - unless you're really into making cards.I say this is unfortunate because it's the only chapter that you can see from the amazon preview. Overall, the lessons are practical and the explanations are helpful. Use this as a tool to further your third or fourth year Chinese writing skills. The writing is very clear, and even a high school student with a good background in mathematics shouldn't have much difficulty comprehending most chapters. Professional developers should probably just stay clear of this book, and go straight to Dave Eberly's "Game Physics." Don't expect to find a robust physics engine in this book either. All demos are pretty rudimentary, poorly organized and even buggy. Although this book is written for salespeople to jump start their sales career, I think employers will benefit more by using this books to guide their new salespeople. Most day is a simple 1 to 2 page read and teach one single concept or technique of selling. I can see this book will help the employers/managers life a bit easier when they hire a new salespeople.

Little Black Book of Connections: 6.5 Assets for Networking Your Way to Rich Relationships ReviewI have three of Mr. Gitomer's books and although they all provide some useful information, I just can't help feeling like they are regurgitations of Mr. Dale Carnegie's work. This book (like his 'Little Red Book of Selling') is filled with "Red Bits" or "Git Bits" which are keywords he uses in his books; when you come across one of these keywords you are asked to visit his website where you can enter the keyword and get more information, but in order for you to do that you have to register with his website, which means guess what? Yep, a weekly email from Gitomer filled with pictures of him and his crew asking you to buy his products. I think his best book is 'The Sales Bible' and if you want to spend your money on one of his books it should be that one, otherwise, go to the originals such as Dale Carnegie, Earl Nightingale and Napoleon Hill.Little Black Book of Connections: 6.5 Assets for Networking Your Way to Rich Relationships Overview
