Offshore Software Development: Making It Work ReviewI bought a copy of this book and distributed it to many inside my firm. The general consensus was it is eminently readable, clear, concise, and helpful, and summarizes the learning of many experienced individuals who have actually lived and breathed Offshore program execution.
I'm honestly not sure if reviewer John H Kaplan actually read this book. For example, there is a great deal of emphasis on "formal communication" (read: methodology), and how important it is to making Offshore work. Awareness and management of risks, including network security and communcation, financial planning, and even internal communications, are identified and discussed in a pragmatic and accessible fashion.
I take strong exception to this kind of emotional lambasting masquerading as objective feedback. This is not the forum to discuss and decide whether Offshore works. Clearly, if Mr. Kaplan is doing Offshore at all, he is doing it unwillingly. But my firm has had great success with Offshore, both financial as well as in quality of delivery, as many have.
Don't let what is clearly an emotional rant against Offshore Outsourcing deter you from reading and learning from this helpful, focused, and relevant book. Personally, I found the book more useful than Freidman's "The Earth is Flat" as it is written by an actual practitioner -- for practioners.Offshore Software Development: Making It Work Overview

The topics are carefully selected and their authors picked from among the top names in their respective fields and therefore, the chapters are focused, targeted and provide the right mix of information and practical guidelines.
Each chapter addresses a single topic (like corporate universities, customer service training, leadership development, etc.) and is written in a straight-forward manner at the right depth making them easy to read and the perfect introduction to the topic without losing it's functionality as a reference.
No T&D professional should go without this book whether as a reference and a quick source of information when memory will just not oblige or an informative and valuable resource for information and ideas.
The Handbook is divided into 5 Sections:
1) The Training & development Function - Covering such topics as the learning organization, history of training and cost accounting for training.
2) Program Design & Development - The chapters on ISD; HPT; Adult Learning; & Evaluation are brilliantly written. I keep on going back to them again and again.
3) Media & methods - Includes some good case studies as well as Thiagi's excellent chapter on instructional games.
4) Training Applications - This is a brilliant discussion of almost all training topics that you might come across.
5) Resources - While these might be a little dated, they are still quite useful.
Check the table of Contents and some of the samples in the pages so obligingly provided by Amazon.com and don't be deterred by the length or the price of the book. The Complete Guide to Transgender in the Workplace ReviewEnlightened self-interest and moral responsibility have led hundreds of cities, numerous states, and many corporations - including nearly 1/3rd of the Fortune 500 - toward expanding their employment policies to prohibit discrimination against their transgender employees. More are incorporating gender identity and expression in these policies every day. As I write this, an inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) is moving through Congress on its way to (hopefully) becoming law.
Writing a law or establishing a policy is not enough to generate an open and accepting workplace. In many of those places where these non-discrimination policies have been generated, one or more transgender employees have been active in creating them. Now corporate officers, managers, and employees must work together to make acceptance of and respect for transgender employees reality. The question is how - how does the company convince ALL of its employees that respect for and acceptance of their transgender coworkers is in their best interest? And how many managers even fully understand transgender and what this means to their company?
Ms. Sheridan's new book is an excellent guide. Beginning with chapters "What is Transgender?" and "Who Are Transgender People?" she goes on to explain why transgender inclusion DOES matter to your business. Several chapters deal with the restroom debate, coming out at work, benefits of transgender-specific awareness training. Her book includes a series of tools and tips for managers and human resource professionals. All these topics are covered thoroughly, often in both her own words and quotes from other referenced articles and books.
Transgender in the Workplace is written not only to educate, but also to be used as a reference. As a reviewer, I sensed some redundancy as I worked through the book, but concluded that it was or would be helpful when using the book as a reference manual. That is, I felt the redundancies were there in order that the person only referring to one or two chapters would have all the necessary information within those chapters.
This book is also useful for the transgender employee who needs to show his or her management that inclusion IS possible without excessive distraction, and that inclusion WILL lead to higher productivity. Employees who feel safe and respected are far more valuable and productive than those who must continually hide significant portions of their identity.

On the basis of this study, they have come out with value-focused criteria for HR department, which suggests actions that HR must take to achieve them. The criteria range from monitoring external business realities to creating a clear connection between HR actions and stakeholders' value.
The book's prescriptions are meant for HR professionals as well as line managers, even as it highlights the path that HR must take to earn its position in the organization. It also seeks to provide a justification as to why a company should invest in HR--a question that CFOs (Chief Finance Officers) frequently ask about the HR function.
The book has argued that for creating value for the business, it has to know what value is." This in turn necessitates understanding the external business environment. The external context impacts business realities, including realities of technology, regulatory issues, and workforce demographics.

The book no doubt gives important insights into the changing roles of HR in the 21st century, and differentiates them from those performed by HR managers a decade ago. It has succeeded in building a useful framework for aligning human resource strategy with organizational strategy so that it enables the organization to efficaciously march towards its vision. It should be read not just by HR managers but by all line managers, who are key HR managers in today's context, so that they can help in organizational capacity-building and performance excellence. The book has outlined a strategic HR agenda in a comprehensive yet lucid way. The roadmap outlined is clear and helpful for different types of readers. It contains many intriguing ideas worth experimenting by practitioners of people management, and well succeeds in outlining the practices and competencies that make a difference in leveraging people potential for realizing organizational goals. The immense experience of the two eminent authors who have built tremendous credibility for themselves for academics as well as practitioners is amply reflected in the structuring of the book. So far as HR literature for managers in concerned, it is going to be a classic and will become a dominant HR book in the next five to ten years.

Interestingly, as a Gen Xer myself, many of these characteristics seem eerily familiar. Ultimately Dorsey succeeds in outlining his management plan including such things as: make the first 30 days count, motivate their latent talents to get the right discretionary effort, and my favorite - building loyalty through leadership - which shows some management techniques will always stay true classics regardless of the generation.
The bottom line is we live in a 24/7, soundbyte culture. The Millennials thrive in this environment and a talent development plan based on rules by committee, slow decision-making process, cultural controls, and top-down management will not empower this group. Communication delivered in steady streams backed up by a solid plan and room to roam will capture the very best from GenY. If you're thinking about a resourcing plan that better attracts, and retains, this young group of go-getters, read this book to help build a strategy that will yield many returns.

I was worried it may be a different book as it was almost half the price as the university. But I am in week 3 of a quarter, and it is the same edition, just not as expensive. The book is an easy read, and it is better than the previous edition. I had the opportunity this summer to take the class with the older edition, but the new edition was smaller and I found easy to read. I would recommend this to any one who wants to learn more about human relations in the workplace. Magic Numbers for Human Resource Management: Basic Measures to Achieve Better Results ReviewI really appreciate this book. I bought it in 2007 and have referred to it continually in past two years. Unlike many books in the management genre, it does not delve in half-baked theories nor try to make us think that their one-trick pony will make us a profitable enterprise. This book offers practical, sensible tools which will transform any HR department into a results based organization versus activities based.
Continuing in the practicality of this work, it provides a glossary of terms that sets forth the operational definition of HR metrics. While we might disagree with the formulas and terms, at least they are provided in a clear, concise way so we can determine if they will fit our particular situation.
I highly recommend this book as a starting place for those in HR that desire to achieve the mantle of being a strategic leader.
