Weak Links: The Universal Key to the Stability of Networks and Complex Systems (The Frontiers Collection) ReviewIf you ever needed another good reason to value your grandmother even more, you'll find the answer in "Weak links".
Structurally, his book starts with an exposition on network theory and
terminology, then the application and discussion of these concepts to
real-life complex systems on many scales and applied to many domains (physical, natural, technological, social). His main point is, as the reviewer noted above, that 'weak' links (weak: additional/removal does not statistically affect the average of some metric) stabilize systems.
The book has thorough footnotes, one can delve as deep as one would like
into the professional papers. In addition, Csermely is an honest scholar - he shows his hands when there is mere speculation (you have to see the book's unique pictograms to appreciate the effects)
After pouring through several alternatives, I have adopted this book as a
textbook for my Science of Networks class (I'm CS fac at an elite US liberal arts school), and I recommend it to anyone without hesitation for a readable, and learned exposition.
I only have two or three caveats from a specialist's point of view: The
phenomenological discovery of power laws in complex systems is not unusual
and may not be evidence of any SF properties. Scale-free is an abused
term, and I wish the controversy about it were explained a bit more. Also, from a modelling point of view, I wish Doyle and Carlson's work on HOT systems were discussed in more depth.
But these are minor points, relatively speaking. This is a gem of a book:
erudite, humane, funny, accessible and thoroughly fascinating. On every
page, there are delights that lead down new intellectual paths.
Csermely did a great service to pedagogy and to this budding science with
this magisterial survey. Outstanding in its ease of access for intelligent
undergraduates and commendable for intellectual honesty - I wish more
books (textbooks and otherwise) were written this way.Weak Links: The Universal Key to the Stability of Networks and Complex Systems (The Frontiers Collection) Overview

You Can Hear Me Now: How Microloans and Cell Phones are Connecting the World's Poor to the Global Economy ReviewTo the typical American (and other developed nation citizens), the cell phone has become part of the normal fabric of life. Communication with anyone at any time from anywhere is just expected. But in countries like Bangladesh, only a very small number of people have access to any type of telephone communication. The book You Can Hear Me Now: How Microloans and Cell Phones are Connecting the World's Poor to the Global Economy by Nicholas P. Sullivan does an excellent job of showing how something as simple as the cell phone can break the cycle of poverty and aid for millions of people.
Contents:
Part 1 - The GrameenPhone Story: Connectivity Is Productivity; Dish-Wallahs of Delhi (and Other Early Models); Cell Phone as Cow - A New Paradigm in Search of Investors; On The Money Trail in Scandinavia; Building a Company; Building a Network
Part 2 - Transformation Through Technology: Wildfile at the Bottom of the Pyramid; Cell Phone as Wallet; Wealth Creation and Rural Income Opportunities; Beyond Phones - In Search of a New "Cow"; Eyeing the Dhaka Stock Exchange
Epilogue; Notes; Resources; Index
The book is split into two parts. The first part covers the story of GrameenPhone's launch in Bangladesh, and the second part is more of a look at the forces behind using technology at the "bottom of the pyramid" (the vast number of people who globally live at poverty level) to connect them to the world's trade economy. Iqbal Quadir was a Bangladeshi who studied and worked in the US and was doing quite well. But he was also concerned about the massive levels of poverty in his home country. Once day he was standing on the street and had an epiphany about communication equaling productivity. His people worked hard, but they had no way to reliably communicate with others except by face to face meetings. All that wasted time meant there was untapped potential just waiting to be utilized. He started talking with Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank (originator of microloan programs) to see how communication technology could be rolled out to the entire country, making a phone available to anyone near a village. Without government aids and grants, Quadir put together a consortium of foreign investors and Grameen Bank to build GrameenPhone, a life-altering company. Using a fiber-optic line already laid next to the country's rail line, they were able to place cell towers in areas to cover all the rural areas of Bangladesh. Then using microloans from Grameen Bank, "phone ladies" could buy a cell phone for the village, offer the phone service, and sell the time in small increments. The cell phone gave a business to the village, in addition to creating subsidiary jobs and opportunities with the communication that was enabled by having phone service throughout the country. It's this use of technology that's advocated in the second part of the book as an example of how business opportunities can remove the grip of poverty from nations and lead to living wages instead of handouts.
You Can Hear Me Now is an inspirational book with plenty of lessons for those who are willing to look outside the normal constraints of what we consider business opportunities.

The Closers ReviewIn Connelly's previous novel, The Narrows, Harry Bosch was seriously considering coming out of "retirement" and returning to service with the LAPD, despite several misgivings, one of which was the entrenched corruption throughout the force. However a new police chief is on board with a mission to clean house. Harry's old enemy, Deputy Chief Irving, a self-serving political player, wants Harry to fail and will do anything to achieve this end. Bosch has been assigned to the Open-Unsolved Unit, (cold cases) teamed up with his old partner, Kiz Rider, a no nonsense police woman in a predominately male domain, embark on an unsolved seventeen year old murder of a young girl, shot through the chest and taken out of her bedroom and dumped in a field. Harry attacks this unsolved murder with calculated zeal, leading to possible corruption in the force, pushing the case to it limits to find the perpetrator. The Closers begins at breakneck speed and doesn't let up until the last page is turned.
Reading The Closers was like meeting an old friend after a year of absence. Harry Bosch is one of the great characters in crime fiction, a man with an incredible sense of justice and an over bearing conscience, that pulls him into trouble from time to time. His relationship with Kiz Rider, as his partner, is a perfect match, as they know each other well, can read each other's thoughts before a word is spoken. Kiz never rides on Harry's coattails, but contributes to the motion, adding her own special skills to the investigation. Harry is older but he's a little smarter, and careful to stay within the bounds of the law. Kiz keeps Harry in line and is there to prevent him from slipping into his old, unorthodox habits.
As a piece of crime fiction, The Closers is by no means a character study, it is entirely plot driven, following Harry Bosch at work to every twist and turn of the case. Connelly knows how to write a crime novel and does not leave anything to the imagination. I have come to believe that the crime genre is an art form all its own, and Connelly has become one of its masters.
This is the real thing. Modern detective fiction doesn't get any better, and in the hands of Connelly, one can be sure the ride will be thoroughly entertaining; and The Closers delivers on all counts - a five star effort.

When God Builds a Church: 10 Principles for Growing a Dynamic Church ReviewIf you're looking for a church growth book containing new innovations, slick marketing techniques or cutting edge theory, "When God Builds A Church" is not the book I'd recommend. Instead, Bob Russell relates ten basic principles for healthy church growth that have been tried and proven extremely effective in the laboratory of the local church. Southeast Christian Church is a church Christ is using to make a big difference in their community and one other churches should learn from. Though Bob argues for his personal preference in worship style and church government, the emphasis of the book is a presentation of universal principles for effective church ministry. Within the ranks of Bible-believing Christians, "When God Builds A Church" is very inclusive and non-sectarian. The book is vision inspiring, faith challenging and "real life" practical. The best thing about the book is that it leaves you believing if God can do something great through Bob, He can do something great through me. I highly recommend the book to all pastors and church members wanting to grow a healthy and effective church. When God Builds a Church: 10 Principles for Growing a Dynamic Church Overview

Commercial Aviation Safety Review"Commercial Aviation Safety" is a great introductory text for students wanting exposure to most safety considerations in aviation. The book is a well-organized survey, although I only award it four stars because the authors frequently get off-topic into areas only tangentially related to aviation safety.
The book opens with a discussion of the aviation regulatory and historical framework. This goes rapidly astray, with discussions of everything from the 1978 lead standard to the 1989 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER), which deals with toxic spill cleanup. Both of these could be tied to aviation safety, but the numerous citations of this nature serve to dilute the import of more important and common aviation safety programs.
Chapter two is a good overview of rulemaking processes, and I agree with the authors that the current FAA rulemaking process is far to labyrinthine at 217 steps long. Unfortunately, chapter two gets into a protracted discussion of OSHA related topics including quagmires like the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement and Fairness Act (SBREFA) which are not especially germane to aviation. Chapter three is a good introduction to the NTSB.
Chapter four is on "Recording and Reporting Safety Data" and is one of the key chapters in the book. The authors make excellent points about accidents and incidents as precursors to accidents (page 75). I was amazed to find that the FAA has 280 separate data collection systems. Clearly a database management system would be of great help to the government. On page 84 the authors have written a great explanation of Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) and the Air Transport Oversight System (ATOS). Anyone interested in this field needs a good working knowledge of these two components. The authors once again (page 92) make the excellent point that nonaccident safety data is vital in identifying and estimating the magnitude of safety problems. Chapter four, unfortunately, closes off course with a discussion of chemical spill reporting requirements. This is only applicable to extremely specialized professionals and is not readily of interest to readers of a survey on aviation safety. (This, for instance, is the closing line of the chapter: "RCRA listed hazardous wastes (F, K, P, U) under 40 CFR Part 261, Subpart D, and characteristic wastes (I, C, R, TC) under 40 CFR Part 261, Subpart C, are reportable if the release equals or exceeds the designated RQ.")
Chapter five is an overview of safety statistics, and pages 102-103 contain an excellent discussion of the utility and interpretation of accident rates and their use as indicators of risk trends. Beginning in chapter five, though, the pro-Boeing bias of the authors becomes readily apparent. Many safety advances are attributed to Boeing when they were actually introduced first or done better by another manufacturer. Chapter five also contains a summary of accident statistics that is useful, although monotonously written.
Chapter six deals with accident causation modeling, and introduces several models including the 5-M model (page 145.) It also contains good discussions of risk management (page 151) and human performance factors (page 160.)
Chapter seven starts with (page 163) an excellent discussion of the management of error, which is becoming more important in aviation today. It goes astray on page 164, though, with an inaccurate Boeing versus Airbus example in which Boeing is seen as the champion for simplicity and Airbus for complexity. The authors then get into an example of fuel system design. Anyone who has flown the B-747-400 and the newer Airbus products (A-320 and subsequent) can refute the assertion that Boeing is simpler. The 747-400 has the most nightmarish fuel system I have ever been exposed to, whereas the Airbus fuel system is very simple to operate. Even the "simpler" Boeings like the 757 and 767 have more fuel-related operational limitations and user knowledge requirements than a newer Airbus. My point here isn't to denigrate Boeing, but to point out that some of the examples in the book are perhaps skewed by personal knowledge or bias. Page 170 has an interesting comparison of 757/767 versus A-320 envelope protection. It is generally well balanced and technically correct, but their conclusion about windshear escape maneuvers is not justified: many simulator studies have now been carried out comparing the Boeing and Airbus escape profiles, and in all that I am aware of the Airbus full aft stick recovery provided greater ground clearance in identical conditions. I am unsurprised that the B-777 is cited for the electronic checklist (ECL) as a safety improvement, although all Airbus aircraft since the A-310 have had excellent ECAM automatic normal and abnormal checklists.
The remainder of the book is an overview of Air Traffic Control (although the authors contend that Free Flight is alive, most think it's DOA), and airline specific information, which is generally good. The book credits the 737 with starting the two-pilot cockpit, while actually the DC-9 flew much earlier. The Flight Control Computer (FCC) discussion of page 248 discusses the advances in modern FCCs, though fails to mention that the architecture being described is exclusive to Airbus. Once again the chapter deteriorates at the end with a discussion of 29 CFR 1910.215, Abrasive Wheel Machinery (pedestal grinders and other grinding wheels), and a discussion of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists under 29 CFR 1910 Subpart Z.
Security is well covered in Chapter 11, although perhaps the discussion of nuclear quadrupole resonance technology, and the Body Orifice Security Scanner (BOSS) are more rooted in minutia than is needed in a text of this nature.
Chapter 12 concerns airline safety programs, and discusses employee selection. Particularly excellent is the discussion of requirements for a Safety Director (page 352). The discussion of Internal Evaluation Programs (page 346) is also superior.
This book is a great resource. The material within it would rate five stars if it weren't for the fairly constant introduction of material only tangentially relevant to aviation safety. I recommend this book for any aviation student or professional.Commercial Aviation Safety Overview

The Burning Soul (Charlie Parker, Book 10) ReviewJohn Connolly elegantly describes life in a small town in Maine and the affects on people's lives when a young girl, Anna Kore, becomes missing.
Randall Haight is an intensely private man who doesn't want his past to be known because he killed a young girl when he was age fourteen.
After serving eighteen years in prison, Randall was released. The records were sealed and he and the other boy involved in the murder, were given new identities.
Someone is mailing pictures to Randall that showed the barn door where he and his friend murdered the girl.
Afraid that he'll be made the scapegoate if he informs the authorities about his past, he hires Charlie Parker to put a stop to it.
Parker is haunted by the death of his own small daughter but takes the case because Haight's attorney speculates that the person harassing her client might be Anna's kidnapper.
Connolly writes in a literary style that is delicious to read, "...there are other places that speak of the ferocity of the sea, of communities sheltering behind butresses of black rock and shingle beaches against which the waves throw themselves like besieging armies..."
There are a number of parallel story lines that merge together in a tidy conclusion with some interesting twists and surprises which add to the reader's enjoyment.
Although not one of Connolly's best, I would rate this a 3 1/2 star, moving up to 4 stars for the story line and literary manner of writing. The Burning Soul (Charlie Parker, Book 10) Overview

The Harry Bosch Novels Volume 2: The Last Coyote, Trunk Music, Angels Flight ReviewFormer newspaper reporter Michael Connelly has been writing intriguing and suspenseful novels for his Harry Bosch protagonist for over a decade now. The first six of these novels have been collected into two hardcover omnibus volumes.
The first volume is certainly required reading if you want to understand the complete background and motivations of this brooding LAPD detective who won't tolerate injustice or any human vice that feeds it either directly (corruption, politics) or indirectly (bureaucracy, laziness, incompetence). They're interesting reads for sure, especially "The Concrete Blonde". However, those earlier stories expose Connelly as a new novelist unsure of what type of character Bosch is destined to be.
This second volume is the work of a much more seasoned and confident author writing about a multi-dimensional and human character. Without giving away any spoilers, I'll say that these three books develop Bosch well beyond just a grim crime-solving automaton who moves from case to case in a very detached manner. He goes after crimes that have personal significance and he undertakes situations outside his role as a police detective. The result is that by the time you turn the last page, you'll be hooked on the Bosch character, not just the stories of the crimes he's solved. That's the hallmark of a great fiction series.
Plus, these three stories are varied and intriguing in their own separate ways. The universe of characters that surround Bosch rotate in and out in ways that are highly interesting without being incredible. "Trunk Music" stretches this point a bit with a story that throws in every angle imaginable and almost loses its way. However, "Angels Flight" rebounds superbly and gets my vote for the finest book of either volume.
These volumes are must-haves for anyone interested in getting acquainted with one of the best mystery writers working today. At a price less than the cost of three paperbacks, you get a well-bound and attractive hardcover book, making this package a wonderful value as well. The Harry Bosch Novels Volume 2: The Last Coyote, Trunk Music, Angels Flight Overview

Imperfect Justice: Prosecuting Casey Anthony ReviewThe first part of the book is a review of the case facts... stuff that was already hashed up a million times over to anyone who's followed this case. It's a nice refresher course and describes every detail, so anyone who hasn't followed (or our kids who may want to read about it in the future) will know exactly what went on.
At about chapter 13-16 (somewhere around there) it starts getting really good. We get to hear about how sneaky Baez was - you haven't seen half of it til you've read this! Imagine that slimy lawyer we saw on the news and at trial... that was only a fraction of how disgusting he truly is!
There are parts that are funny.. like when Linda Drane Burdick dressed up in a "Casey Anthony" costume (blue hoodie with the number 82 from Target & white sunglasses) as a joke for the ride to jury selection...
Wow.. just read the book - you won't be disappointed - well, you might become 10000 times angrier at Baez and Casey and hate them a lot more lol They even explain how the fake drowning/molestation story came about.
Kudos to Mr. Ashton for writing this book. I truly hope it helped him to heal... it was obvious that his emotions got the best of him (all fo them) Mr. Ashton, Ms. Burdick & Mr. George are Caylee's heros.Imperfect Justice: Prosecuting Casey Anthony Overview
