Leaving Your Home-Alone: A Do-It-Yourself Step by Step Guide to Leaving Your Investment Empty for Months at a Time ReviewI have the fortune of having Mark on the scene at my Port Orange Florida home when I am in Massachusetts and not lucky enough to ship him to Medway Massachusetts when we are in Florida. Mark's book is the absolute layman's handbook to protecting that which is only 2nd in importance to protecting your loved ones and the family dog. The mistakes I personally made prior to reading Leaving Your Home Alone (in Massachusetts) cost us over $5,000 in repairs to systems I screwed up by not knowing how to park them. So BEFORE you think about leaving the castle you need to click the buy it button. I have never had a single issue in Florida and we left that in Marks hands since the day we bought it.

Principles of Real Estate Syndication ReviewI have been working in commercial real estate for my entire career (over 15 years) for private companies with portfolios ranging from 50-1500 apartment units. When I ventured out on my own into the world of real estate syndication, Sam Freshman's book provided me with a roadmap to follow. I am currently in the process of raising capital for my first syndicated deal and I find myself constantly referring back to the pages of his book as I go through the process. It is quite a learning curve but has been a much smoother ride having this resource by my side. I have been able to ask more educated questions of my attorneys and advisors and have been able to provide better answers to potential investors with greater confidence. Real Estate Development: Principles and Process ReviewIn its earlier incarnations Real Estate Development Principles and Process was groundbreaking,informative, insightful, and occasionally downright brilliant. This edition builds on that legacy with updated coverage of electronic information systems and thoroughly revised (vastly improved) coverage of marketing and market analysis. However, Development is still not an easy read; adjectives like ponderous, academic, and stodgy still apply!
Development is structured around an Eight Stage Model, prefaced by ~200 pages of introductory material about developers, development environments, development finance, and real estate development in the United States. The authors emphasize several themes:
* The interplay between markets, marketability, and feasibility: Development recognizes thatprojects must be feasible for all of their constituencies to be feasible for the developer.
* The role of public and political interaction and goal congruity in the process: Development extends James Graaskamp's thoughts on development as socio-political activity.
* The necessity for coherent risk-management and exit strategies at every step of the process:Development emphasizes the development process as (simultaneously) a business activity, a prelude to property management, and an integral part of asset/portfolio management strategy.
At core, Development is about process. Each successive step of the model applies: increasingly sophisticated analysis or procedures to ~ increasingly specific and refined data in order to ~ match resource commitments to ~ the "go forward" decision's inherent risk and "reversibility." Model steps include:
1. Inception of the Development Idea
2. Refinement of the Idea
3. Feasibility
4. Contract Negotiation
5. Formal Commitment
6. Construction/Development
7. Completion and Formal Opening
8. Property, Asset, and Portfolio Management
The eight step format is instructive, but probably shouldn't be taken too literally. One could argue just as easily for as few as 5 or as many as 15 steps.
In practice, development processes often overlap or are indistinguishable from each other. Project inception, refinement, and feasibility analysis collide willy-nilly. Negotiation, commitment, and construction proceed simultaneously and loop-back to accommodate change orders or "unanticipated events." (Who knew about the aquifer under that hillside?) Recently re-invigorated design-build strategies (e.g. Integrated Project Delivery) usually require greater developer commitment, and greater risk, at earlier stages of development than the authors' model contemplates.
None of which detracts from this book's achievement!
As a textbook for a junior or senior level real estate development class (the authors' intended audience) the work has no peer. It is a monumental tour-de-force of development with unrivaled breadth and depth.
Development can also serve as a reference and how-to guide for practicing developers and their advisors - no matter how sophisticated we think we are already. The bibliographic material,references to printed and electronic data sources, and the authors' analysis of the data's limitations are enough to justify keeping a copy of Development close by - though you may have to reinforce your bookcase just to be on the safe side!

A (minor) quibble about style: Development's prose is turgid, its sentence structure convoluted. {We counted 8 subordinate clauses in one (not atypical) sentence that continued for 24 half-column lines.} The authors are inordinately fond of "laundry list sentences" - multiple nouns, separated by even more numerous adjectives, strung together by a plethora of commas, colons, semi-colons and "and/ors," with nary a verb or a period in view (kind of like this sentence). The authors wrote much of the book in passive voice (an unequivocal breach of Strunk and White's law for effective prose). Net effect, Development is a difficult read! The authors' style (or lack thereof) masks their often startling insights into the development process.Real Estate Development: Principles and Process Overview

It is for R.E. agents (actually Realtors), but alot of it could be used for almost any internet business. Teaches you how to make the center of your business your webpage.
Without getting into too much detail, this book covers topics such as: Why not to use your name as your domain name, how to use multiple domains, driving traffice to your website, capturing e-leads, follow up, turning leads into customers for life, email marketing, building an email database, using virtual assistants and more. Real Estate Investment (with CD-ROM) ReviewAfter having read many books on real estate investing that were more of the mainstream self-help type, I wanted to find a book that was on an advanced level, perhaps something that is used in business school/university. This book does in fact read more like a collegiate book, and it has tidbits here and there that were not in the other books I've read. However, some areas are very poorly explained, I'd probably say a good 1/4 of the book does an awful job at explaining areas that I understood previously. So, I normally don't write reviews, but I then think if I find some areas confusing and they're topics I did understand coming INTO reading this, then some people who are using this first the first time are going to be like "WTF" at times. The sad thing is it's not because the topics are too difficult to understand, like I said, just not well written. But having said that, this is a good supplement book to pull some facts out of that are not in the mainstream books. I want to give it a one just to offset the 5 star ratings, but I don't think it's that bad. Mastering the Art of Selling Real Estate: Fully Revised and Updated ReviewI read alot of Real Estate Sales books and I really enjoyed this one. This book also takes into consideration many tools that people use today to make Real Estate agency more efficient. Tools in everyday life such as computers, email, and the like. What I like most about Tom Hopkins book is that he gets down to the nitty gritty of the thought process of your potential customer.
Im a Real Estate agent that has gone under many Real Estate training seminars and read many books. Most of these training sessions focus more on scripts and handling the most common objections you'll come across as an agent. They focus on a particular way to prospect, present, and close. Thats fine and there's nothing wrong with that. However unless you understand the reason behind why those scripts work, or the reason your asking or responding in a certain way, then you wont know how to respond when you have a more aggressive customer that is also familiar with those same scripts that your blurting out and has built up defenses against them.
Tom Hopkins book gives you the tools, ideas, and a deeper understanding of the Real Estate sales process so you can adapt more quickly to adverse sales situations or create your own style of salemanship that works with your personality. Many Real Estate Sales books and seminars fail at this by telling you exactly what to do and when to do it, not taking into consideration if whether or not their particular style fits your personality. I've seen many very successful agents with completely different styles of prospecting, presenting, and closing. Some styles are even contradictory to each other but both Real Estate agents are very successful. Why is this? Because beyond the obvious differences in style, the successful sales process all share the same things in common.
