Instructor Excellence: Mastering the Delivery of Training (Essential Knowledge Resource) ReviewI have used this volume to set standards for the instructors in our Corporate Training Division for the past five years. I am ordering more copies for two new employees - one with experience looking for more polish, another a junior trainer needing a baseline for training etiquette. This book is a valuable tool for both individuals, as well as others in between. Great information and ideas!Instructor Excellence: Mastering the Delivery of Training (Essential Knowledge Resource) Overview

The Frog and Prince: Secrets of Positive Networking To Change Your Life ReviewDarcy's book is terrific for pretty much everyone on the planet. Sounds, a bit much I know, but when you take into account that we all must rely to some extent on the assistance and contacts of others, then there is no better book to cover off the bases of why Networking is a crucial function to understand and master.
The style is straightforward and the content easy to grasp. There really isn't any good reason NOT to follow the concepts explained in this book.
For those of you who groan inside when you hear that you must attend a networking party, this book will surely help you overcome some of the notions you have about networking and what it can do for you. (And it isn't only relevant for business...no matter what you are involved in, having a strong supportive network can only help you.)
Of particular interest to me was the concept of approaching networking (and in a greater sense all relationships) from the perspective of how you can help others. Darcy addresses those networking types who scour a room on the prowl for only those people who can forward their own short-term aims, and rightly characterizes these folks as short-sighted. (These people also give networking a bad name for us simple folk that are only trying to help.) The idea of seeking first what you can do to assist others with their goals is reminiscent of Mr. Covey's "Seven Habits" concept of, "Seek first to understand, then be understood."
Some may think:
But what about the payoff? When will all this helping others help me? It's a shark pond out there and being nice to strangers will only be seen as a vulnerability to be taken advantage of.
If you believe this, I suggest you ask every successful person you have met if they got to where they are now by themselves. The point is, we NEED each other to do neat stuff. And there is no better way to move forward with your own goals than to willingly assist others in achieving theirs. Darcy's book outlines this very clearly and concisely, and offers a lot more useful advice as well.
Buy this book, read this book, and incorporate the ideas in this book into your life, and you will notice a big difference. The Frog and Prince: Secrets of Positive Networking To Change Your Life Overview

Essential Managers Manual ReviewThis book covers most aspects of management and supervision. Even experienced leaders have weak areas and this book does a good job of helping you improve your overall management skills. For less experienced personnel, it provides a comprehensive look at eleven different management skill areas that are essential to good management.
There may be better treatises on the individual subjects, but I've not found a better manual that covers this broad spectrum of management skills.
The book layout is perfect for either quick scanning or in depth reading.Essential Managers Manual Overview

CustomerCentric Selling, Second Edition ReviewAs reviewed in our January 6, 2004 issue:
Let's cut to the chase: This is the best book on sales we've read in many, many years.
"CustomerCentric Selling" doesn't break new ground with sales tricks and techniques; rather, its strength is in the fact that it ties sales, marketing, and business imperatives together in a way that has the potential to turn conventional selling approaches on their collective ears.
In fact, there's a bit of a paradox here: If you're a dyed-in-the-wool software sales rep with a quota to meet or beat, you may be disappointed in this book, because you won't find any magic bullets you can employ to meet your month-end number.
If you are that beleaguered sales rep, you may even find yourself annoyed with Bosworth and Holland, because their message is that your obsession with quotas is misguided. That's easy for them to say, right? They don't have a sales VP banging them on the head every Monday morning.
But that's exactly the point: If you're that rep, get your sales VP to read "CustomerCentric Selling" Better yet, get the company's CEO, CFO, COO, CTO, VP marketing, investors, and board of directors to read it.
"CustomerCentric Selling" does such a superb job of outlining why people buy -- and when and from whom -- it should be required reading prior to the creation of any business plan.
Yes, it has the word "selling" in the title, but this book is a really a business book more than it is a sales manual.
Bosworth and Holland won't give you 15 clever opening lines for telesales, or 12 terrific PowerPoint templates. But they will help you understand what it is that you're selling, whom you should be selling it to, where you should find them, and how you can refine and manage the messaging as well as the sales process.
In other words: Read this book when you're ready to stop screwing around. Read this book when you've realized that selling to early adopters isn't really selling, it's order-taking. Read this book if you're tired of acting as referee between marketing and sales.
Although "CustomerCentric Selling" isn't written specifically to software people, the fact that the authors have spent most of their lives with technology companies permeates every page. Because it applies a sales perspective to Geof Moore's chasm concepts, the relevance for software companies is very high indeed.CustomerCentric Selling, Second Edition Overview

What Great Salespeople Do: The Science of Selling Through Emotional Connection and the Power of Story ReviewMike Bosworth's and Ben Zoldan's new book, What Great Salespeople Do, is a fast-paced, easy-to-read and understand approach to selling. Having spent thirty-plus years in sales, I personally can attest to the power of story telling. After reading Mike and Ben's book, I created my own stories and experimented. Much to my delight, I barely finished my stories before my prospects shared theirs. This remarkable book takes selling from a sleazy, slimy profession and helps transform it into a humanizing, caring and helpful approach that prospects not only relate to, but embrace and become internal sales supporters. The book is well-written and engaging from the first page: the individual stories grabbed my attention and paved the way to understand the scientific and emotional aspects of 'Why' story telling is so powerful and effective. I found What Great Salespeople Do to be insightful, revealing and extremely helpful. What Great Salespeople Do: The Science of Selling Through Emotional Connection and the Power of Story Overview
