Understanding Digital Marketing: Marketing Strategies for Engaging the Digital Generation ReviewAgree with others that this book is very well written. Easy to understand and reads quickly, which is notable for a book on a subject that could easily be made a much more complicated and technical conversation. Especially helpful are the 'pledges' at the beginning of each chapter that identify questions up front that the content in the chapter will address. Also helpful are the case examples at the end of each chapter.
From a content perspective, the book explores the main components of digital strategy, and is written in a way that is relevant to any size business, whether it be a large organization or a start-up. Personally, as a brand manager within a larger company, this book added depth to my basic understanding of digital marketing strategy and helped me better understand how it should be integrated into overall marketing strategy and execution.
However, since the digital (and especially social media) landscape has been evolving at such a rapid pace (and since the book was written), it would be great to see updates made to some chapters within the book to make it even more relevant.
Otherwise, this is a great book for those looking for an in-depth introduction to digital marketing principles and strategy, or even for those already familiar with digital marketing in their organization who would like to better understand how what they do fits into an overall digital marketing framework.Understanding Digital Marketing: Marketing Strategies for Engaging the Digital Generation Overview

Instant Income: Strategies That Bring in the Cash ReviewIf you buy this book looking for ways to generate "instant" income, you will be disappointed. While there are some good ideas in the book, it is not a how to manual. Most of the ideas presented take both time and money to implement.
Having worked with hundreds of small business owners over a number of years, I found the section on intrapreneurship (an employee going into business with the owner)to be a little naive. My estimate would be well over 90% of owners of small businesses would be rather closed minded about the concept.
I found the book to be a good reminder of lots of things any business owner should at least think about. However the information was extremely general in nature. While there were some good points on most of the subjects covered, if you don't have the know how to implement them, you will either need to buy into Janet's coaching program or seek other expert advice.
Again it serves as a better reminder and check list than as a how to manual.

Integration Marketing: How Small Businesses Become Big Businesses and Big Businesses Become Empires ReviewUnless marketing is totally new to you, you have heard of and probably used all the concepts discussed in this very short book. Mark does try to stake out new territory by assigning new names to old concepts. But even then he discusses the concepts in very general terms. He talks about the what to do but never really gets around to specifics of how to do what he is talking about.
The book opens up by asking you to go to his website and complete five steps to see the Integration Marketing theory in practice. Step one is to provide your name and email address so you become part of his mailing list. The third step tries to sell you an advanced course on Integration Marketing.
Mark is a very savvy marketer. You will learn a lot more by watching what he is doing than by reading this book.
The contents of this book could be delivered in 15 - 20 pages if he cut out all the unnecessary fluff.
He promises to give a formula for calculating the profit potential for any Integration Marketing deal. However what he gives is a formula that requires a lot of arbitrary estimates. Garbage In Garbage Out comes to mind. It is easy to develop business projections. But business projections are only as good as the underlying assumptions. There was no real guidelines for developing the estimates that goes into this formula.
In my opinion, the entire book is designed to get the reader to seek additional, higher priced information.
There is no doubt that Mark can teach a lot about marketing. If you wish to become a student of Mark, save the money on the book and apply it directly to the higher level study.Integration Marketing: How Small Businesses Become Big Businesses and Big Businesses Become Empires Overview

Real-Time Marketing and PR: How to Instantly Engage Your Market, Connect with Customers, and Create Products that Grow Your Business Now ReviewPeter Drucker, who Jack Welch called "the greatest management thinker of the last century," suggested that businesspeople have clear answers to the following three questions:
1. What is your business?
2. Who is your customer?
3. What does your customer consider value?
In "Real-Time Marketing & PR," bestselling author David Meerman Scott urges businesspeople to consider a fourth question:
"How can you deliver value faster?"
With changes brought on by the internet and other forms of technology, the concept of delivering value faster has become, for many, a governing competitive advantage.
In this new effort, Scott (who, in full disclosure, is a client and friend) tells the stories of people and organizations that have acted on real-time opportunities, or have built cultures based on delivering value at breakneck speed.
Scott writes, for instance, about how TMZ and Politico regularly scoop larger news sources, because TMZ and Politico operate on a model that focuses almost exclusively on "breaking news and instant analysis." He tells us, too, about how ClickSquared gets better open-rates and more upsells when the emails they send are triggered by what's happening to recipients in the moment. Also, in an in depth analysis of the "United Breaks Guitars" story, he discusses how Taylor Guitars and Calton Cases grabbed attention for their brands by taking prompt action on a piece of the whole.
If you've read other books by Scott, you know he provides readers with plenty of tactics. This book is no different. In it, you'll learn about using social media, crowdsourcing, videos, mobile devices, media alerts, communications guidelines, and other tools, which will speed up the way you collect and act upon information.
The book's greatest service, however, isn't in its tactics. Instead, it's in helping readers develop a "now" mindset - one that will help them take action in a situation as it's happening -- when acting matters most.
Once you read Scott's sage counsel and entertaining stories, you'll likely see your business environment in new ways. With speed as a lens, you'll spot opportunities and take action with a swiftness that may surprise you.Real-Time Marketing and PR: How to Instantly Engage Your Market, Connect with Customers, and Create Products that Grow Your Business Now Overview

Real Estate Rainmaker: Guide to Online Marketing ReviewAny agent, new or old, can use this one. I was actually looking for info to help me with my mortgage business - and this one delivered. It is for R.E. agents (actually Realtors), but alot of it could be used for almost any internet business. Teaches you how to make the center of your business your webpage.
Without getting into too much detail, this book covers topics such as: Why not to use your name as your domain name, how to use multiple domains, driving traffice to your website, capturing e-leads, follow up, turning leads into customers for life, email marketing, building an email database, using virtual assistants and more. In depth. This is the type of book I have been waiting for (and again, I'm in the mortage business - not a real estate agent!)Real Estate Rainmaker: Guide to Online Marketing Overview

The AMA Handbook of Public Relations Review
I loved it. Impressive. I won't say it is a "detailed" handbook to use to actually become expert at PR in the 21st century. But it is a wonderful book that covers the following:
>>New media [Web sites, blogs, & mircoblogs]
>>Old media [Newspapers, magazines, etc.]
>>Public speaking
>>Market research
>>Tactics for keeping up digitally
I'm not sure why "market research" was included. But then the book is sponsored by the AMA. I found the text to be well written and outlined. It is comprised of four parts that are broken into 19 chapters and three appendices. I urge you to examine the Search Inside feature Amazon provides for this book so you can see the 19 chapter titles.
Back in May, 2009 I read and reviewed Putting the Public Back in Public Relations: How Social Media Is Reinventing the Aging Business of PR. In that review I commented that there should have been a chapter on Investor Relations. Well, the instant book has one. See Chapter 13 and the related chapter on The Annual Report (14). I like both books. And I think they compliment one another. I highly recommend any public relations professional who wants to be competent in their field and make things happen today read both as companion books. 5 stars! The AMA Handbook of Public Relations Overview

The Six-Figure Second Income: How To Start and Grow A Successful Online Business Without Quitting Your Day Job ReviewI enjoyed reading this book. I purchased it from Amazon because Jim Cockrum endorsed it in his newsletter (which is how I heard of it). The book basically outlines step by step how to set up an information product business online. The first chapter explains why this business model is ideal for most people, due to low overhead and the almost bottomless demand for information products online. Chapter 2 suggests ways to build a profitable infoproduct quickly. I think they should have explained the "profitable" side of things a bit more explicitly. For example, while many people might have collections of recipes at home they think they could sell online, most people searching for recipes online are searching for FREE information, not an ebook they have to pay for. Ideally, you should create an infoproduct for a market where infoproducts are already selling well. Scanning the categories of products on Clickbank.com is a good way to get ideas for products of your own. If you aren't sure what to create, think about the products that people are already selling on Clickbank, and then come up with a complementary or supplemental product that would be a logical "upsell" to the audience for those products. This is the most important decision you will make, and determines if your product will sell, more than any other factor. Beyond that the book outlines the different content formats you can choose to make, how to set up a website, get traffic and turn your "prospects into buyers." I learned the most from chapter 6, and I think that chapter alone is worth the price of this book. While it doesn't explicitly teach you how to write a sales letter it tells you some important things to consider when setting up your sales page. I think a few sales letter examples and a simple template would have enhanced this chapter a lot, especially for beginners who are new to information marketing online. A separate chapter on outsourcing would have been helpful also. My thoughts are you should probably write rough drafts of your ebook and sales page and then outsource the rewrites to someone more experienced to "clean them up" for you. I prefer vWorker for all my outsourcing, since I have the option to pay for deliverables only, rather than for time. It seems to result in faster turnaround, and since the funds are escrowed, I don't have to release them until I am completely happy with the end product. For beginners, I also recommend using e-Junkie rather than Clickbank or 1shoppingcart. With e-junkie you get payment processing, but they also create expiring download links automatically and I believe they also host your actual product files, so you don't have to create any web pages yourself other than just the sales letter page, with the order button connecting to your e-junkie checkout. That saves time, and also eliminates some of the learning curve with having to create web pages and learning to FTP your files to a download page, as well as not having to learn to install a script to create expiring download links yourself. If you're a beginner and you don't know much about web design you should probably try out Blinkweb's hosting - you get a free domain name and a wysiwyg editor that includes simple sales page templates that are super easy to use, and are designed specifically for information marketers. All you have to do at that point is upload an image of an "add to cart" button and link it to your e-junkie account for checkout. e-Junkie does the rest. If you don't like paying $14.99 a month for hosting and you don't mind the learning curve, then google "Chris Farrell" and sign up for his free "Success Grenade" videos that walk you through web page setup step by step. You'll learn how to FTP your web site, create download and squeeze pages, upload files to your site's hosting account and more. I think Blinkweb + e-Junkie would save you more time and let you get your business up and running a lot faster, but if you don't mind a few months extra work and study, you can learn to do it the "hard way" through Chris Farrell's video series. Overall, "The Six-Figure Second Income" has a lot of good ideas and recommendations, even though I disagree with some of the recommendations in chapter 4, since they aren't very beginner-friendly, and can stymie someone for months before they can get an actual product online. Even if you start with only Blinkweb for hosting/web design, e-Junkie for shopping cart/payment processing, and the basic Aweber account for managing your customer list, it will cost under $40 a month to get going, and takes a lot of the technical stuff off your plate. The Six-Figure Second Income: How To Start and Grow A Successful Online Business Without Quitting Your Day Job Overview

KaChing: How to Run an Online Business that Pays and Pays ReviewI have been looking for legitimate ways to make money online and got this book to help me do just that.
Some of the book was great, but there were also a lot of confusing and unorganized parts. In short, the book was all over the place.
Some of the sections were very basic and others more advanced. I'm not sure if it's for a beginner or somebody that is advanced. It doesn't really focus on one group. You'll get something out of it I'm sure, but if you're like me, only about half of it will apply to you. Because of this, I'm rating it right down the middle.
A few days before this book, I read Laptop Lifestyle - How to Quit Your Job and Make a Good Living on the Internet (Volume 1 - Quick Start Guide to Making Money Online) and was glad to have done that, since I feel it helped me to "read between the lines" with the information in this book. There were times when reading this one that I was going right along with the author, understanding what he was saying, but then he'd lose me by jumping to something else without finishing the thought. At the end, I was left with a bunch of odds and ends of a big picture but no real plan of action for making money now, with the exception of Adsense ads on a blog I have. If all the needed information to make a good living online was in this book, it wasn't organized well. He talks about blogging a lot, so perhaps this book was developed from random blog articles?
Just to give you an example of what I'm talking about, the first part of the book is a very basic section he talks about setting up a blog with Blogger. Then he talks about adding ads to make money from it. I was with him at this point and that's what I've done so far. He gives a list of banner ad companies and talks about Google Adsense and that was helpful to me. If you are not online at all, this is a good thing to read to make that happen although some of the finer details and technical terms are not explained well. If you've been doing this a long time, maybe you'll do better than me at figuring out how it all fits together, but if you've been doing it a long time, you're probably beyond a free blog on Blogger, too. I just started and am already seeing the limitations.
I enjoyed the part where he talks about "7 Types of Content" to put on blogs. For example, posts that review things, posts that interview people, "Top 10" lists, and Q&A posts. This gave me some good ideas and was the highlight of the book for me.
Then he starts to get more advanced and talks about buying articles to post on your blog, which I think is a good idea, because I'm busy. My hope of saving some time didn't last long though because when I went to the site he recommended, it appeared to be brand new, with only a few articles to purchase.
This is the kind of "back and forth" you get with this book. One minute you're following along and completely with him, then there is a detour that kind of derails the plan or at the very least confuses it. One minute he's doing something for beginners, like helping you get a free blog up, and then he spends an entire section talking about legal issues of posting testimonials.
Then he talks about passive revenue with membership sites. Then speaking. Then coaching programs. Then branding strategies. Then how to deal with PR and media people.
There is a lot of information here, but very little detailed information. If you are looking for a book that is going to guide you step-by-step to a business that makes money online, this is not it.
What this book does well is give you little ideas you can use in an existing business. The only problem there is that he jumps around to so many areas, he doesn't give the finer points of anything. I was hoping for more specifics.KaChing: How to Run an Online Business that Pays and Pays Overview
