IC Mask Design: Essential Layout Techniques ReviewThe clear presentation style of this book makes for an extremely easy reading. However don't let simplicity be mistaken for usefulness. This books is packed with great advices & nice rules of thumb. Best part is the presentation of 2 step by step layout case studies: a CMOS amp & BJT mixer at the end.IC Mask Design: Essential Layout Techniques Overview

Learning from Accidents, Third Edition Review[previously :Didier Bizzarri (D.Bizzarri@ulg.ac.be) (Liège, Belgium, Europe)]
I am surprised to see so few reviews for T.A.Kletz books.
If you are dealing with potentially hazardous installations or systems, and not only if you are an engineer, you should read some Kletz. Allways hinging his books around his very message, T.A.Kletz constantly gives interesting practical examples and fine advice, from his 40 years own experience. He 'dismounts' accidents, their causes, superficial and underlying down to the detail. He shows the different aspects of human/organisational responsibility in accidents and their prevention. After going through one of his books, "human error" never reads the same again. In "Learning from Accidents", he does follow that methodology for about ten famous accidents, various generic accidents and many incidents. He shows how major accidents come out of sequences of minor defficiencies and are helped by sleeping faults, poor management, poor procedures, poor incident reporting,... poor design... and poor remembrance of previous accidents/incidents.
If we don't learn from our mistakes, why bother making them?

So You Want to Be a Garden Designer: How to Get Started, Grow, and Thrive in the Landscape Design Business ReviewAs a landscape designer, I hear it all the time from new acquaintances... "I'd LOVE to do what you do... think about plants all day, design gorgeous gardens, get my hands in the earth."
But almost as quickly as their tone turns dreamy, they snap back to reality. There are just too many buts. "But I have a well-paying job!" "I don't know enough about plants." Or most daunting of all, "I wouldn't even know where to start".
Love Albrecht Howard has crafted a thorough and detailed guide to getting past all those "buts" and getting into a career you'll love. She's got suggestions for how to start out slowly if you can't afford to leave your day job, how to build your knowledge and professionalism, and suggests ways of handling common situations as a designer.
Of course, along the way you'll learn the unvarnished truth about what it's like being a landscape designer. We all have horror stories of clients who think designing with plants is like designing with objects - that we should be able to specify no-maintenance plants that will do well without water, in poor soil, with deer and dark shade - yet flower all year long!
Albrecht Howard shares her professional tricks on designing for tough conditions, as well as for communicating the possibilities to clients. And she shares the pitfalls she's found as a designer and advises you on how to work professionally through the expected and not-so-expected adventures you'll have as a designer.
If you know what knowledge gaps you're missing, it's not too hard to figure out how to gain skill at specific aspects. But so much of the value in this book is in teaching fledgling designers what they don't yet know they need to learn. These are the tricks most of us learn after years of mistakes, and Albrecht Howard shares her experiences honestly so that new designers won't have to learn from the school of hard knocks the way the rest of us did.
Now - two things you should know about this book. One is that it's full of text. Not a lot of pictures. This is great if you're really motivated to read her stories and learn from her experience; it's not fluff. But if you're expecting photos of gardens or illustrations of different materials, how-to photos, or just want to skim through casually reading bits here and there - this probably isn't your book. Invest the time to read it properly and you'll find your time well-spent.
Thing number two: While it has a lot of value to established designers (I've been designing for seven years and I adored the camaraderie of finding out how similar her experiences have been to my own!), this book is much more about how to begin the process of becoming a designer than about the specifics of building and growing your business. It's not a marketing or business book, it's a how-to-approach-this-thoughtfully-as-a-career book. You'll still need coaching from your local small business administration on how to do all the nuts and bolts involved in starting and running any business.
My take? This is an awesome book that will help you figure out whether this is really a business you want to be in, and if you do, she'll hold your hand and help you feel confident and professional tackling your first jobs and getting started as a designer. And if you're already a designer, like me? Read it just for the client stories! I laughed, hard, and felt so much better knowing I'm not alone...
(EDIT September 1, 2010: It's occurred to me that while the business practices Howard espouses are perfectly legal in her state, it might not be obvious to people new to this field that laws vary wildly from state to state.
The business practices Howard advises, such as overseeing a landscape installation as a general contractor without holding a contractor's license yourself, and taking 50% of the bid price for installation prior to the start of the job are both very illegal in CA, where I live. Here, designers cannot subcontract out the installation of the design unless you hold a general contractor's license. Just wanted to urge people new to the business to call their own state contractor's board to find out the laws in their own state and not take it for granted that all of the business practices Howard advises will be applicable to you.
This is a small part of the book, though, so shouldn't detract from your enjoyment or the usefulness of the book.)So You Want to Be a Garden Designer: How to Get Started, Grow, and Thrive in the Landscape Design Business Overview

Innovation X: Why a Company's Toughest Problems Are Its Greatest Advantage ReviewThere are many books about innovation. Most of them simply tell you to listen to the customers and let your marvericks do their jobs. Honestly they dont work at all or you wont find that many books about innovation in a book store. One major blockade, particularly for big corps, is the need to have excellent b-cases supported by detailed action plans to convince various layers of management to approve and endorse "something they had tried before but failed", not to say the effort to organize the resources. In that respect, the author had helped by providing a necessary framework for the aspired innovators to solve the X-problems (for definition, please consider the X-files) through the parallel execution of four methods (Immersion, Convergence, Divergence, Adaption). Even though you had already been exhausted by your previous innovation attempts, the author's insights on ecosystems, customer touchpoints, customer journeys, customer experience and core insights still worths it a quick read. In short, recommended!
p.s. Below please find a few favorite passages of mine for your reference.
The present should be a beta of the future we want to live in. - Fabio Sergio pg147
A way to evaluate your passion and compassion for an innovation is to think about you panic threshold....It takes discipline and nerve to wait out wait out adaption and not prematurely lock down the definition of the X-problem or what your approach to it will be. Doing so risks missing out on the real opportunity. Pg155
Plant seeds, not forests. - Brian Eno pg164
Understanding the changing business context, trends and customer needs is too important to be left to a small group of people, who will by necessity have only a constricted view. The more Jason Bournes you have out there gulping down the world, and the less you have to reply on sucking it through a straw like his government pursuers, the better. Pg185
Ed Catmull at Pixarargues, "If you want to be original, you have to accept risk, even when it's uncomfortable, and have the capability to recover when your organization takes a big risk and fails. What's the key to being able to recover? Talented people! Pg208Innovation X: Why a Company's Toughest Problems Are Its Greatest Advantage Overview

Standard Handbook of Machine Design ReviewThis text is an excellent reference for any design engineer working in the machinery field. It fills in where the Machinery's Handbook falls short. The text is basically (I am oversimplifying) an expanded version of the Shigley McGraw-Hill Machine Design Textbook. Faster Cheaper Better: The 9 Levers for Transforming How Work Gets Done Review
Those who have read any of Michael Hammer's previous books (notably Reengineering the Corporation co-authored with James Champy and The Agenda) already know how clearly he thought and how eloquently he wrote when sharing his thoughts about how any organization (regardless of its size and nature) can develop processes by which to produce work faster and cheaper. His premature death two years ago at age 60 was a tragic loss to his family members, friends, and associates; it was also a significant loss to thought leadership of the very highest quality. Credit Lisa Hershman with helping to ensure that Hammer's draft was eventually published. Sadly, it proves to be his last book and, in my opinion, his most important work.
Questions are much easier to ask than to answer. For example, why is it so difficult for most companies that have all the resources they need (including talented, skilled, intelligent, and energetic people) to achieve and then sustain continuous improvement of performance? According to Hershman, here is what Hammer's research has revealed. "It's simply the way companies today are organized and operated makes it impossible for them to get the dramatic performance improvements they need even if they were staffed by supermen and superwomen. The only option is deep and fundamental change to how they do the work. Providing the road map to doing so is the mission of this book."
More specifically, what Hammer and Hershman offer in this book are five process enablers (i.e. the process design, appropriate metrics, performers who do the work, a process owner, and an effective infrastructure) that comprise the aforementioned road map for "transforming a process and creating breakthrough performance." However, important as this map is, it is insufficient because so many companies seem to know what to do but just can't get it done. In many instances, their leaders have developed what Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert Sutton characterize as a "knowing-doing gap." Companies that have been able to follow Hammer's road map "did so because they have four enterprise capabilities in place - overarching characteristics that equipped them to undertake fundamental transformation: leadership; culture; governance; and expertise."
Readers will appreciate Hammer and Hershman's brilliant use of various devices, notably checklists such as those that identify Do's and Don'ts at the end of each of the first six chapters that comprise Part I:
Design (Pages 63-65)
Metrics (96)
Process Ownership (120)
Performers and Infrastructure (150-151)
Leadership and Culture (178-179)
Governance and Expertise (214)
There are dozens of other checklists throughout the narrative that also summarize key points. Reader-friendly devices such as these facilitate, indeed expedite periodic review of them.
Then in Part II, Hammer and Hershman help their reader to "pull it all together" (Chapter 7) before shifting their attention to five mini-case studies: Tetra Pak in Sweden (Chapter 8) and Gemesa in Mexico (Chapter 9) followed by three "of companies we're calling Four Aces, Hattaway, Inc., and Acme Specialties" that demonstrate what can happen when various mistakes "undermine the benefits that flow from a well-honed process organization." Although valuable lesson can be learned from what achieves success in a process, even more valuable lessons can be learned from what prevents it.
To me, the most valuable material in the book is provided in the final chapter but only because Hammer and Hershman have used the previous chapters to create a context, a frame-of-reference, for the Process and Enterprise Maturity Model (PEMM) based on the nine critical high-level organizing principles "that can transform a mediocre company into a high-performance organization." It is important to keep in mind that PEMM does not specify what any particular process should look like. Those involving the improvement of cycle time or first-pass yield, for example, will differ - sometimes significantly -- from one company to the next; indeed, they can differ - sometimes significantly - in the same company from one department to the next.
Hammer and Hershman explain, PEMM identifies the characteristics that any company should have to succeed in implementing process transformation." A company can apply PEMM to all its processes and can develop processes unique to its own needs...It is a model designed to measure how well the organization is adopting the nine principles of process. " After working their way through the book to the final chapter, readers may ask, "How mature are the processes in my organization?" Hammer and Hershman conclude their book with a five-page detailed audit by which each reader can answer that question. The grid lists the nine organizing principles vertically and four levels of maturity horizontally. Annotations illuminate the evaluation process.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Hammer's previously published books (notably the two aforementioned, Reengineering the Corporation co-authored with James Champy and The Agenda) and Enterprise Architecture as Strategy co-authored by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson as well as Dean Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement.Faster Cheaper Better: The 9 Levers for Transforming How Work Gets Done Overview

An Introduction to the Design and Behavior of Bolted Joints (Mechanical Engineering, Volume 97) ReviewThis book covers all the fundamental issues related to bolts and bolted joints. It is very easy to read, and does not go too deeply into technical subjects, but gives the reader a full appreciation for the issues involved. As a materials engineer I appreciated the section on bolting materials. As a design engineer, I found the sections on designing bolted joints very helpful. As Plato expressed long ago, the wiser you are, the less you realize you know. After reading this book, design engineers not familiar with all the issues will likely not take bolts and bolted joints for granted. An Introduction to the Design and Behavior of Bolted Joints (Mechanical Engineering, Volume 97) Overview

Foundations of Interior Design ReviewIf you wish to pursue a successful career as an interior designer, or you are keen to develop your interest in this field, my advice to you is to buy this book. Buy it, read it, and make it your good friend! Whatever your background, this course will encourage your individual creativity and help you to explore and further your own design ideas.
I am a student in The Metropolitan Institute of Interior Design, a career changer with English as a second language. I have read some interior design educational books before, but none of them gave me as much knowledge, nor inspired me to approach the subject with as much enthusiasm and passion as this book by Susan Slotkis.

Just Enough Software Architecture: A Risk-Driven Approach ReviewThis a broad and deep book on all things software architecture except the architecting process (for process, one recommended read is "Process Software Architecting" by Eeles/Cripps). Several readerships will benefit from "Just Enough Software Architecture":
- As an experienced IT architect, I do not necessarily agree with everything in the book (this does not come as a surprise, as architects have opinions). That said, I certainly learned a lot that I can apply immediately on my projects and some of the more provocative statements challenge me to leave my comfort zone (or at least consider doing so).
- Junior architects can use the book both as a tutorial and as a reference when/while growing in their profession.
- Developers with a "who needs architects" mindset (hopefully) will understand architects and modelers much better after having read this book, and appreciate the value of archtecture.
Things I liked in particular:
- Overall vision and message of pragmatism sent
- The risk-driven approach increases chances to get accepted both in agile development and in more traditional architecture communities
- There is a lot of practical advice e.g. in Chapters 10, 11 and 15
- The author is in command of a large body of relevant related work (both industra and academia) and puts them in perspective adequately
- Editorial quality: structure, figures, command of the English language (some words and expressions a bit be hard to comprehend for non-native speaker)
Some room for improvements (2nd edition?):
- Not all metaphors and analogies work internationally, e.g. not all IT people are sports fans that follow baseball or know what a rookie is
- The connection between parts 1 and 2 could be a bit stronger, even if loose coupling generally is a good thing; e.g., some more backward references
In summary, I'd say Just Enough Software Architecture is a highly recommended read for every architect in touch with development reality and every developer with a desire to build complex systems that will stand the test of time.Just Enough Software Architecture: A Risk-Driven Approach Overview
