The Professional's Guide to Financial Services Marketing: Bite-Sized Insights For Creating Effective Approaches ReviewThis book is a good read and I highly recommend it for the financial services professional. Mr. Nagdeman conveys experience and wisdom. In my experience as a business coach and consultant, I've come across many financial services professionals who are stuck in a rut using the same marketing techniques as everyone else and trying to keep up with their competitors. This book instills structure and "Tactical Implementation" using branding as foundation, to help financial service professionals to differentiate themselves.
The author sums up this problem neatly when he writes, "Unfortunately, many financial services executives fail to distinguish between strategically oriented, integrated marketing programs and specialized marketing activities implementation activities. For many, the 'M-word' is clearly a synonym for advertising or various others forms of promotion and tactical implementation - from direct mail programs and brochures to convention activities and chachkas." This illustrates the core problem with marketing in this industry- too much copycat behavior, too little differentiation. The real benefit of the book is the knowledge that you gain after establishing this problem, teaching you what to do to stand out and gain clients.
This book is a great addition to the library of the seasoned Financial Services professional, and a good foundation for the novice just entering the industry.

Getting Clients, Keeping Clients: The Essential Guide for Tomorrow's Financial Adviser (A Marketplace Book) ReviewI read this book from cover to cover and dog eared nearly every page. Dan Richards thoroughly covers topics such as: target marketing, prospecting, putting the customer first, getting referrals, conducting evaluations of your service, networking, managing a large client base and even firing difficult clients; and of course, everything in between. There are so many magnificent and expertly covered ideas in this book, you might feel overwhelmed with excitement and anxiety after finishing the book. Never fear, Richards touches on how you can implement many of the ideas in his book one or a few at a time without going overboard.
I will advise that this book is geared more towards the advisor with a year or more in the business (e.g. it does not cover cold calling), however, novices will pick up many ideas that will be useful in dealing with clients from the outset and in growing a practice effortlessly.
As an aside but also important, the central tenet of this book is similar to the ideas covered in Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People." The Million-Dollar Financial Services Practice: A Proven System for Becoming a Top Producer ReviewI must not have read the same book as the other reviewers or I did not work with Mr. Mullen. I ordered this book looking for great things after reading the other reviews. I was sadly disaapointed. This book could be summmed up on one page.
The what: have 20 years to chase people with at least $250,000 to invest in modern portfolio theory. The How: You accomplish this by contacting 100 prospects (people you have met and would be open to meeting with you again) at least twice a month. Once via a phone call, letter or email. Once via a drop by in person. Raise at least $120 million with an ROA of .8% and you have a $1 million dollar practice. His scripts are very different than the ones on his website and the 15 marketing plans are a joke. For example, Mr. Mullen states that 52% of the millionaires in the US are business owners and he spends 5 pages on a marketing plan with three of the pages scripts. Where is the detailed step by step plan.
Great promise, not much substance.
Save your money and DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!! I would be curious why Mr. Mullen is retired and why Merrill Lynch would let him if he has worked and produced so many great advisors.

It is so true that there are too few mentors in this business with the expertise and having the time to share their personal success. They don't have the time because they are too busy creating and living their success. Dave manages to capture their time for you while asking all the questions that you would if you had the chance. It was inspiring to hear the actual steps that people took to create their success. It left me feeling like it is not to late to change the trajectory that I am on and set a new course in my own career. I will read it again and use it as a compass in my own practice. I recommend it to anyone interested in taking their business to a next level.
