Maritime Security: An Introduction (Butterworth-Heinemann Homeland Security) ReviewI have only just received this volume and had a good look at it. As an introductory book on this topic, it is excellent. The text is easy to read and relevant. Some of the pictures are a bit unclear but overall the book is well worth the investment.Maritime Security: An Introduction (Butterworth-Heinemann Homeland Security) Overview

Devil Wind: A Sammy Greene Thriller ReviewI really enjoyed this novel, which reminded me of Raymond Chandler's "Red Wind" in that Schlian and Reid (like Chandler) use the wind as almost a character to punctuate the tension and heat of Los Angeles during the course of the story. The plot was so compelling and complex and integrated the subplots so well that I found it hard to stop reading. Sammy is working in Los Angeles, in and of itself a wonderful setting with the Santa Ana winds, when a woman's body is found. Without giving too much away, we eventually learn the body may be that of Sammy's mentor/father figure's daughter and that the death may be related to the manipulative machinations of a CIA operative who wants to control the upcoming presidential election . I particularly like the way the authors create a sense of vulnerability in Sammy (who's pretty tough, overall) through her desire to have a closer relationship with her father and ex-boyfriend. I'm not a big suspense reader and suspect it was the characters - Sammy and the alleged dead woman and even the not-so-bad guys (as opposed to the evil-doers) - that compelled me to keep reading as much as the plot. There aren't many women who write straight suspense and I think that sensibility - seeing the world and events through a young woman's eyes - was also a plus for me.Devil Wind: A Sammy Greene Thriller Overview

Fine Chemicals: The Industry and the Business ReviewWhat exactly are fine chemicals? Pollak explains how to distinguish these from commodities and specialities. While no precise definitions exist, these are broad categories readily recognised as such within the chemical industry. In terms of value added, fine chemicals sit between the commodities and specialities.
He then goes on to explain the business. Including management aspects, which are quite different from those of the large chemical firms. The volume of product is much smaller, mitigated by the higher price per kilo. There are also high fixed costs and large amounts of working capital. Though of course the commodity producers share much of these characteristics.
The text also delves into the customer categories. Who do you typically sell to? As well as the geographic regions. And the distribution channels often used. Since a firm in this business might not have the sales volume to justify having many of their own salespeople. So distributors are essential.Fine Chemicals: The Industry and the Business Overview

Nights of the Red Moon Review
The red moon hovers over a tale of murder in East Texas, silent witness to the dead body of Amanda Twiller, casually tossed onto the lawn of her home. Sheriff Bo Handel gradually pieces together motives and suspects in this wryly crafted mystery, Burton imbuing his weathered lawman with a quirky perspective on the world and a lifetime of relationships with friends, loyal deputies and the occasional interaction with FBI sources when the need arises. Like the experiences of this likable widower sheriff, the threads of time and place weave through the lives of regular folks, minor criminals and the inevitable sharks that prey on their weaknesses. Personalities loom large in Burton's story (a low-key but equally affable hypothetical long-lost cousin of James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux), but when the minister's estranged wife is so outrageously displayed in death, Bo takes exception. Like her troubled life, Mrs. Twiller's colorful past leads Bo in many directions.
Slowly, methodically, Handel works the office phones, his deputies, sources and imagination to eliminate one suspect after another in a novel that explores rural Texas and its inhabitants, from hardworking families to the petty criminals who scurry around the edges of opportunity, a slice of American life untouched by city troubles until the creeping violence of the drug culture infects nearly every level of society. Handel tolerates mischief in "his town" only when it harms no one but the doer, but Amanda's murder leads to some ugly revelations and a few blatant lawbreakers who need to be put away. A tale of crime and punishment that focuses on the universality of human failure and the infestation of drugs in East Texas, the investigation moves inexorably toward a climax, the attrition of time demanding occasional retribution and a lot of respect for the character of those who endure and carry on for the sake of the next generation. Burton is an engaging writer with a sly wit and a world of wisdom, a welcome addition to the crime thriller lexicon. Luan Gaines/2010.

The Quest for the Cure: The Science and Stories Behind the Next Generation of Medicines ReviewDrawing heavily from his research & academic backgrounds, Stockwell provides an informative account on drug discovery challenges and ongoing/potential approaches to address them. For a reader with medical background, this is an excellent read while a general reader will struggle with the details. (3.5*)
(Review adapted from my blog; free advance copy provided by the publisher)
At the very outset, Stockwell provides a succinct explanation of why drug discovery is far more challenging than what one may imagine - by focusing on the actual mechanics of "small drug molecules" and proteins involved in disease progression. (A reader can easily grasp this complexity when Stockwell highlights that only 2% of the proteins are now considered "druggable" and the generally risk-averse scientists typically tend to focus only on this minority due to commercial considerations.) The discussion on how drugs actually work may be of interest to the average reader. He then describes (with various examples) various drug discovery mechanisms and a history of cancer drugs. The role of luck in discoveries, of course, is well known...but through these discussions, one gets to appreciate not only the role of luck but also of perseverance and a systematic approach to design experiments. A subsequent chapter on the author's entrepreneurial experience provides some insights on the potential of studying combinations of approved drugs - but the narration is too focused on the company history, a reader is likely to be distracted.
The second part starts with an introduction to promising emerging techniques of drug discovery including structure-based designs, virtual screening, and fragment-based screening. He discusses the origin and potential of these techniques (sometimes a bit too detailed for an average reader), including aspects related to protein-protein interactions and emergence of personalized medicine. Then, the discussion takes on a far more technical density highlighting protein redactions, tagging and libraries for complex structures, biologics and some suggestions that border mostly on policies than technological issues.
One of the main issues with the book is it is not clear who the intended audience is and what level of details is expected of them. The narration (first-person account) appears to alternate between targeting students/new researchers and experienced peers, with a generous autobiographical component in between. This mosaic of narrative tones is very demanding on the reader and oftentimes tangential to the central themes. An average reader with a cursory knowledge about drug chemistry will likely gain from the first part of the book in understanding the complexities of drug development and also various background (very technical) of some of the classes of drugs and some better known biotech companies. The second part is likely to be beneficial for students of this field or those in the drug development ecosystem.
Perhaps, it is a reflection of the complexity of the topic - despite the best efforts of the author to make it accessible to a wider audience; the book is unlikely to sustain the interest of a reader with a non-medical background. The constant intertwining of autobiographical narration, historical vignettes of key personalities and the scientific research being discussed makes for a very challenging read... but well worth it for someone in this field by providing a realistic assessment of the potential for new drug discoveries.
