Option Trading: Pricing and Volatility Strategies and Techniques (Wiley Trading) ReviewThis is a case where I would have liked to leave a blank rating: I simply don't know enough to grade competently. My problem with this book is that, with a few exceptions (hedging bands of chapter 11; range-based vol estimation), it could have been written twenty-plus years ago, when Black, Scholes, Merton and Rubinstein had published their papers, and the volatility smile was known but not yet addressed by academics. Academics moved on - have practitioners followed?
If yes, I would penalize the book for being out-of-date and not 'fessing up to it. I would have been quite receptive to an argument that the main ideas can be demonstrated in the oldest, fundamental model, but the more recent stuff really needs to be in the book as well.
If not, no complaints, apart from insisting on more substantial chapters 9 and 11. Once we emerge from textbook options stuff after chapter 8 - including the titular "strategies", in chapter 6 - there are only four chapters left, and one is taken up by textbook-again discussion of market-making. Less of familiar material, more of your thoughts, please.
This is a thorough and well-written discussion of options in the Black-Scholes world. (This means European equity options - no American options or exotics, no fixed-income etc.) 85% of the material was not new to me, and seen in Hull, and CFA and FRM curricula. I would wish to check if the remaining 15% had shown up in similar books, but even in that case the author deserves credit for bringing it all together, and first-rate presentation throughout. If one is looking for a comprehensive introductory-to-intermediate book on options, this is a reliable choice.Option Trading: Pricing and Volatility Strategies and Techniques (Wiley Trading) Overview

How to Make Money in Commercial Real Estate: For The Small Investor ReviewWhile Mr. Masters does make several good points, most of the information in this book could apply to any real estate investment: whether it be residential or commercial even though the title of this book clearly makes it appear that this book will focus on commercial properties, which it does not.
Mr. Masters starts the book by making a quick comparison between real estate and other investments, such as holding your money in cash, saving accounts, securities, collectibles, and precious metals. He gives the advantages and disadvantages of each: namely, liquidity versus returns. Now, we get into the meat of the subject matter. First, Mr. Masters argues that an investor should own their own primary residence and have 12 months of expenses in the bank before venturing to invest in commercial real estate: conversative, but good enough advice. He gives comparisons between different commercial properties you can invest into, with garden apartment complexes and anchored shopping centers getting his nod as the best investment choices for a real estate novice. He argues that novice investors should form investment clubs to invest in real estate together; however, he gives very little advice as how to hold title and what form of ownership the group should take. I understand that people must consult with tax and legal professionals to see what best matches their situation, but it would have been nice to have Mr. Masters elaborate on this since its a key argument of his book.
To find property, Mr. Masters tells the aspiring investor to work with a knowlegable broker and not purchase a property with a cash-on-cash return or a cap-rate under 8-10%. While I agree its very important to buy properties with positive cash-flow, this is one of my biggest issues with this book: while in theory it'd be great to skip every property that offers lower returns, in today's market its virtually impossible in most top markets to find properties with those types of returns. If you follow the advice of the author, it will now be impossible to purcahse most investment opportunities as he does not leave room for exceptions in his rule. He also ignores other calculations and never shows how to construct an APOD, which really dates this book. There is no mention of an IRR or projected cash-flows. He also never says to independently confirm the income and expense figures given by the seller even though 9 times out 10 the cap-rate the seller gives on a property is calculated off of proforma numbers that are not aligned with market realities. I can sum up his financing section in a single sentence: find a good mortgage broker to find you a good rate on a fixed, 15-30 year mortgage. And to manage your property? Use a professional management company and watch them for a year to see how they do it, then you can consider doing it on your own. He gives very little helpful advice on what to look for in a management company, mortgage broker, or real estate broker as well.
Tax information is included relegated to an appendix, yet it doesn't even touch on a 1031 tax-deferred exchange and tax implications of real estate investments are hardly touched upon, and when they are, they're no longer applicable as tax laws have changed. I don't remember reading anything about what will effect the basis of your property, how to calculate cash-flow after taxes, or even more than a few quick words about depreciation!
For someone who has purchased their own home or has even a little bit of real estate knowledge, this book has little pratical use -- the only difference between this book and better, cheaper books that I've read is the author's limited information on investment clubs. He even gives poor advice on finding information online: he tells the reader to go online and type in a few keywords on a search engine, not realizing that the reader will find plenty of advertisers and unscrupulous companies in the results.
For anyone who's interested in investing in real estate, I recommend the first thing they learn is how to evaluate properties so they know what to look for in an investment opportunity. To that extent, I highly recommend Frank Gallinelli's "What Every Real Estate Investor Needs to Know About Cash Flow and 36 Other Key Financial Measures", a far-superior, more-practical, and less expensive book. How to Make Money in Commercial Real Estate: For The Small Investor Overview

Everyone's Money Book ReviewI've followed Jordan Goodman's advice for a number of years on television and recently bought this book. If he missed anything in money matters, it probably isn't worth mentioning. It is invaluable for the contacts he listed on how to save money....and frankly, it is loaded with lots of common sense. If couples would agree to read this book and adhere to his advice, the divorce rate would probably plummet (well, that may be extreme)Everyone's Money Book Overview

Hedge Fund Operational Due Diligence: Understanding the Risks (Wiley Finance) ReviewGood solid book. The author began this book by essentially stating that this is a subject that has been ignored for way too long. After reading this very instructive work I couldn't agree more - operational due diligence is a very important part of hedge fund investing, and this book was a great guide. I liked this book for several reasons, the biggest one being that it does not merely describe just a checklist or outline a due diligence questionnaire for hedge funds due diligence. The operational due diligence techniques described seemed to be practical and actually something people could implement. I also liked the historical perspective gave me a good context for everything I was reading too. I enjoyed the examples too. A lot of interesting points and was thought provoking for me.Hedge Fund Operational Due Diligence: Understanding the Risks (Wiley Finance) Overview

Media Training 101: A Guide to Meeting the Press ReviewThis book gives you the essentials about dealing with the media, starting with interviews and calls from reporters. Sally Stewart, former journalist and PR practitioner, delivers the nitty-gritty. Her advice to recognize reporters' financial and emotional pressures is particularly useful. Reporters have two clear priorities, she says, to write good stories and to go home. If you want their good will, try a little respect, she suggests, although she displays considerable cynicism and negativity about them. Her lessons include getting reporters to pay attention and which reporters to contact and how, be it by phone, e-mail or fax. Stewart tells you how to deal with unexpected calls from the press, and how to decide whether or not you want to be part of a story. If you do, here's how to make the most of it. And if you don't, this book tells you how to extricate yourself, if possible. Along the way Stewart explains how to dress for a television appearance. If this paragraph mentions any core skill you don't already have, we have a newsflash for you: get the book.Media Training 101: A Guide to Meeting the Press Overview

Raising Entrepreneurial Capital ReviewThis book provides a wealth of practical information about financing an early-stage business. It begins with a discussion of the various legal forms of entities, goes on to cover debt and equity financing techniques, introduces helpful approaches to valuation (not found in too many other books targeted to the early-stage entrepreneur), and then discusses exit strategies. There are also several helpful case studies, a sample term sheet, etc. I'd recommend this book as a great introduction to the subject of small business finance, and as a helpful guide to anyone seeking to raise money (with a competent business attorney by your side) from angel or venture capital sources.

Acts of God and Man: Ruminations on Risk and Insurance (Columbia Business School Publishing) ReviewThis book collects Powers' highly idiosyncratic and original thoughts on risk management, statistics, experimental design, and the paranormal. I found the book extremely entertaining and insightful, and would recommend it to the thoughtful reader who enjoys collections of deep thinking a la Deirdre McCloskey (or Michel de Montaigne). The book may also be of special interest to practitioners and executives looking for an understanding of the philosophical issues in insurance. I would not recommend using it as a textbook.
The sheer number of new ideas per page exceeds that of many other comparable popular science books. Powers isn't just summarizing results in his field; he is a man standing up for what he believes.
Powers argues for:
- A Bayesian approach to statistics. This is especially useful given limited data in risk and insurance
- Separating the management of "aloof" and financial risks
- The idea that there is no such thing as "Knightian uncertainty"
- Contemplation of the paranormal as a means of understanding knowledge and uncertainty
- Global warming skepticism
He also touches on his original research including:
- "Tail risk" (see Nassim Taleb's work)
- The "personalized scientific method" based on Bayesianism and game theory.
This is not just another bland serving of pop science (so frustrating!). I regard this as a highly intellectually combative piece summarizing the author's original insights and views on risk and uncertainty. Recommended!Acts of God and Man: Ruminations on Risk and Insurance (Columbia Business School Publishing) Overview

Getting Started in Real Estate Day Trading: Proven Techniques for Buying and Selling Houses The Same Day Using The Internet ReviewWhile this book is well-written and easy to read, it falls short on a couple of important points. "Day Trading" real estate, as defined by Goins, is really nothing more than basic double-closing/simultaneous closing house flipping that has been around for years. Yes, you're in and out the same day because both your purchase closing and sale closing are scheduled back-to-back, but you contract weeks in advance. Nothing new at all. Certainly more than a day to turn it around.
Also, the book claims that you can do this "without cash." However, in Chapter 7 Goins suggests that you borrow against your credit cards, life insurance, personal home or IRA. Or another suggestion - sell your stuff on Ebay. Sure are a lot of suggestions for getting that cash that the cover of the book declares you don't need to day trade real estate. Goins recommends a deposit of at least $500 for most contracts. That's required cash, pure and simple. It seems a bit deceptive to repeatedly say you don't need cash to do this when the reality of this method, or pretty much any real estate business method, is that at least some cash is required.
The print quality was lacking in the copy I received, with several of the front pages being illegible ink smears.
This book is well-organized and probably contains a nugget of good usable information here and there. If you've already read about flipping houses you will find little new material. If you haven't read about flipping then this book is as good as any to use for basic information.

Principles of Real Estate Syndication ReviewI have been working in commercial real estate for my entire career (over 15 years) for private companies with portfolios ranging from 50-1500 apartment units. When I ventured out on my own into the world of real estate syndication, Sam Freshman's book provided me with a roadmap to follow. I am currently in the process of raising capital for my first syndicated deal and I find myself constantly referring back to the pages of his book as I go through the process. It is quite a learning curve but has been a much smoother ride having this resource by my side. I have been able to ask more educated questions of my attorneys and advisors and have been able to provide better answers to potential investors with greater confidence. This is a great reference for seasoned real estate professionals as well as undergrad or post graduates going into the real estate field.Principles of Real Estate Syndication Overview

Hedge Fund Due Diligence: Professional Tools to Investigate Hedge Fund Managers (Wiley Finance) ReviewRandy Shain's book is an essential tool for anyone interested in the process of performing background checks on hedge fund managers. Randy has written about the processes that are necessary to conduct this type of due diligence. The book is very detailed, leaving nothing out about the procedures his team performs on the hedge fund manager. At times it is almost too detailed, explaining explicitly how some specific searches are performed. However, Randy often interjects amusing anecdotes or opinions to keep the book interesting and lively. These often involve stories of how people who fail to perform his recommended steps do not discover crucial facts about the manager that could be a determining factor in whether or not they invest with that manager.
The book's title is a bit of a misnomer, as it covers only the background check process and does not cover the entire due diligence process that sophisticated investors need to follow. However, Randy makes it quite clear within a few paragraphs that he does not attempt to describe the whole due diligence process.
It is likely that Randy's firm has run more hedge fund background checks than any other firm in the industry, making him an expert in regards to performing background checks on hedge fund managers. This is a must-read book for all investors in hedge funds.Hedge Fund Due Diligence: Professional Tools to Investigate Hedge Fund Managers (Wiley Finance) Overview

Real Estate Investment (with CD-ROM) ReviewAfter having read many books on real estate investing that were more of the mainstream self-help type, I wanted to find a book that was on an advanced level, perhaps something that is used in business school/university. This book does in fact read more like a collegiate book, and it has tidbits here and there that were not in the other books I've read. However, some areas are very poorly explained, I'd probably say a good 1/4 of the book does an awful job at explaining areas that I understood previously. So, I normally don't write reviews, but I then think if I find some areas confusing and they're topics I did understand coming INTO reading this, then some people who are using this first the first time are going to be like "WTF" at times. The sad thing is it's not because the topics are too difficult to understand, like I said, just not well written. But having said that, this is a good supplement book to pull some facts out of that are not in the mainstream books. I want to give it a one just to offset the 5 star ratings, but I don't think it's that bad. (Although seeing as there are only 3 ratings as of now I'm sure 2 are biased/author affiliated.)Real Estate Investment (with CD-ROM) Overview

Invest in Penny Stocks: A Guide to Profitable Trading ReviewI am new to investing in stocks and wanted to start with penny stocks to "cut my teeth" so to speak. Although I have invested in some penny stocks and made some money, I wish I would have been in possession of this book before I did.
Don't let the title fool you. This book's information can be applied to penny stocks and "big boy/girl" stocks. It is so plain and straightforward, I couldn't believe it. Things that I did not understand or even think about, Peter Leeds covered in great detail and thoroughly explained each step to investing. I have never read a financial-based book that has so much detail and balances the detail well through plain, easy to understand wording.
I would rate this book 4.75 out of 5. Why not 5?? Unfortunately, Peter refers too much to his $200 a year stock recommendation report (or whatever he calls it) that runs through what he terms as Leeds Analysis. While I am not interested in a $200 a year recommendation report, the book is still a solid, information packed book. To Peter's credit, he breaks down what Leeds Analysis is and how you can do your own analysis. Again, this book is very detailed and thoroughly written.
I highly recommend this book. I have no doubt that long-term wealth is on its way to me through investing in the market (stocks, real estate, etc).Invest in Penny Stocks: A Guide to Profitable Trading Overview

The Little Book of Big Dividends: A Safe Formula for Guaranteed Returns (Little Books. Big Profits) ReviewAs a young investment manager I like readable books that I can read in the evenings that can explain concepts clearly and simplify things where appropriate as opposed to the textbooks I'm familiar with which are heavy on theory but weak on application. This book is such a book but with limitations.
As an investor who does not believe in relying on other peoples' models unless I can actually see what goes into a model, this book is a good starting place for understanding the fundamentals of dividend centric investment strategies for your own creative thinking process.
BUT do realise that an important aspect of Mr. Carlson's valuation methodology lies in his Quadrix score generation which is obviously a complex multi level model which he explains only at the simplest level, if you want to use Carlson's formula for picking dividend stocks, you MUST rely on the assumption that his Quadrix model will continue to beat the market based on the evidence that he has presented. Then you MUST only pick from the free data available at his website or PAY for the Quadrix data or RELY on his stock picks.
Personally, I feel this book is worth the money I paid for it just because it gives me a basic understanding into his methodology as well as a updated (weekly) list of stocks he picks using his Quadrix method. I intend to look into his stock picks but I will use my own analysis, relying on black box models always gives me the creeps...
In conclusion,
This is a good book on fundamental dividend stock valuation technique, a computer savvy investor familiar with market valuation techniques might be able to take his hints and formulate his own model but the average investor will need to either pay for the Quadrix scores or rely on the free scores available for a certain amount of stocks. He also provides alternatives to his Quadrix model but overall the key item to finding strong dividend stocks in the method that he would is kept away from us.
Whether this is fair given the cost of the book, I leave to you to decide.
Ben Phua
All in all a decent book if you take the advice with a grain of salt and common sense. The Little Book of Big Dividends: A Safe Formula for Guaranteed Returns (Little Books. Big Profits) Overview

The Real Estate Game: The Intelligent Guide To Decisionmaking And Investment ReviewThe Real Estate Game is well written, using simple easy to understand terms. It's a must read for the professional, the amateur, the investor and anyone else thinking of buying and selling either commercial or residential property. Most enjoyable is the view of the real estate process from all angles. You get to see how all those involved, the buyer, seller, contractor, manager, attorney and lender fit into the picture. The real life examples and case studies help explain what can be very complicated situations. As primarily a residential realtor I gained new insight into the commercial end of the field. It always amazes me how the entrepreneurs in real estate often took great chances on a hunch that what were bargain basement deals would eventually turn into gems. The stories about these men and women are particularly fascinating. The authors, Poorvu and Cruikshank, offer a world of advice and first-hand knowledge to anyone involved in any way in Real estate. This should be required reading for all brokers, realtors and advisors to anyone getting into the real estate game. The Real Estate Game: The Intelligent Guide To Decisionmaking And Investment Overview

Best Practices for Equity Research Analysts: Essentials for Buy-Side and Sell-Side Analysts ReviewMy friend Tom Brakke, liked this book and said I would too. He was right, and soon afterward, I heard the author speak at the Baltimore CFA Society. Hearing James Valentine speak is an advantage here. He summarized what is most important, which if you are reading the book, it would be chapter 20 (out of 27). It is his FaVeS framework: Forecast, Valuation, and Sentiment, in that order of importance. Remember that as a key to the book if you read it; it tells you what to focus on as an analyst.
Another key, since the book is long, is to look at the shaded summaries which are usually at the back of each chapter. If stretched for time, read those first, and then read the chapter if you didn't get it.
This book aims to focus analysts on information that matters. Aim for information that makes a difference, and that few others have. Create an information web that maximizes the value of your time, and creates value for your research.
This book covers both the buy-side and the sell-side, telling each how to best use the other side. As a former buy-side analyst, to me it means fewer analyses, and better analyses. Aside from that, it is a game: buy-side: identify the better sell-side analysts and listen to them. Sell-side: identify clients that will generate commissions and market their best insights to them.
Regardless, analysts must identify the few factors that account for 80% of the performance in a given industry, and focus on those intensely. It helps to get into the industry organizations, which can help drive insight into the industry as a whole, and provide a backdrop for questions to ask when talking with executives in the industry.
Learning this will give an analyst a leg up on other analysts. Analysts should also understand the basic accounting structures of their industry so that they can identify companies that are not playing fair -- over-reporting income. I would add don't get negative too quickly. Frauds can develop a momentum of their own. Wait until the fraud gets large relative to the size of the industry before issuing a sell call -- wait for price momentum to go to zero. (Note: for investigative journalists, this does not apply. Jump on early, so that you can say that you warned everyone.)
Basic forensic accounting skills help, as do modeling skills, and basic statistical skills. I was surprised to learn a bunch of Excel shortcuts that I haven't seen elsewhere, and I have used Excel for nineteen years at a high level. The summary of accounting deviations is cogent, as well as pointing readers to Mulford and Schilit.
One idea that I heartily agree with: set up your spreadsheets to differentiate data and formulas. Cells with data series should only contain data. Formulas should have no numbers in them, unless they are trivial. This makes analysis a lot easier and cleaner in the long run.
The book also brings out the need to consider multiple scenarios, which help an analyst to flesh out his analysis. Being willing to consider what can go wrong, or right, richens an analysis. Also, the book warns against common pathologies that overcome analysts, notably -- Confirmation bias, overconfidence, Self-Attribution-bias, Optimism, Recency, Momentum, Heuristics, Familiarity, Snakebite (won't go back to one that hurt you), Falling in love, anxiety, over-reaction, loss-aversion, etc. I have experienced a few of those myself, and would have benefited from thinking these through before becoming an analyst.
Quibbles
I would warn any analyst trying to use simple or multiple regression that they are playing with fire, unless they understand the weaknesses of the data, and the limitations of the general linear model. In twelve-plus years working on Wall Street, I never saw regression used right once.
The author seems to favor DCF over multiples. Truth, neither works well, and one must live with the weaknesses of any approach. DCF embeds a lot of assumptions that are known, though some may be wrong -- multiples embed unknown assumptions.
The author does not like price-to-sales. For industrials and utilities I would say look at a chart of price versus price-to-sales. In most cases, they track, because sales don't vary that much in the short run. If you know the high and low P/S ratios for companies in an industry (P/B for financials) you have valuable information. It gives you boundaries to look at in buy and sell decisions.
I would also warn analysts against using Damodaran and those like him. I don't think his models are wrong so much as impractical. I would rather use a simple model that catches 80-90% of the action, versus one that catches 100% of the action, bet cannot practically be calculated.
Who would benefit from this book:
All equity analysts would benefit from this book. It is detailed, and yet practical. Some of our competitors will benefit from it, and if you don't read it, you will wonder why.Best Practices for Equity Research Analysts: Essentials for Buy-Side and Sell-Side Analysts Overview

Managing Your Personal Finances ReviewI used an older version in 1991 in high school, but boy how finances have changed. Now would like an updated version for my homeschooled daughter. Kudo's to the older version and I am positive the newer one will be worth the purchase.Managing Your Personal Finances Overview
