Exploring Criminal Justice ReviewTo be blunt, this is one of the best text books I have read during the course of my education. Several facets of the book particularly stand out. First, unlike many text books, the book is well written. It is easy to follow and written in an engaging manner. Second, the book is extraordinarily current: the authors discuss a variety of recent events in criminal justice which makes the material easy to relate to. Third, and most importantly from my perspective, the book is objective. Too many times during my education I have had to read text books that are clearly being authored from one perspective or another. Personally, when reading a text book, I am not interested in the author's soapbox, but am rather interested in gaining a clear understanding of the material. This book accomplishes that and then some. Finally, the book is beautifully laid out. It contains a number of pictures, graphics, and charts that add to its readability. In sum, a great introductory text to the criminal justice field, and a welcome reprieve from the rest of the text books on my shelf.Exploring Criminal Justice Overview

Developing Writing Skills in Chinese ReviewThe official amazon description of this book is accurate: this is a very practical guide for the post-intermediate learner of Chinese. I'm certain it would make a great textbook, but I'm using it more as a reference tool. The chapters on business correspondence, personal letters, formal letters, and announcements and small ads have been particularly useful to me so far. Each chapter is focused and provides an ample supply of useful vocabulary for each writing goal. Another nice thing about the book is that all grammar points are very well explained and answers to nearly all exercises are in the back.
Unfortunately, the first chapter of the book, "Cards," makes the book seem boring - unless you're really into making cards.I say this is unfortunate because it's the only chapter that you can see from the amazon preview. Overall, the lessons are practical and the explanations are helpful. Use this as a tool to further your third or fourth year Chinese writing skills. Real Screenwriting: Strategies and Stories from the Trenches ReviewThe first thing you will notice about Ron Suppa's book "Real Screenwriting" is that it is heavy. One person can carry it, but it is 400 pages. And it is not just heavy because of the page count. This book is heavy with valuable, useful material, thoughtfully presented.
This is not for dilettantes. If you are looking for short cuts to that first big spec sale, buy one of those cute, little, entertaining paperbacks. (Or contact me. I probably have all of them on my shelf.) This is a book for people serious about learning the craft. It is also entertaining. His "From the Trenches" sections are both fun and informative, stories from someone who was, and is, in the middle of the Hollywood scene.
But the really interesting thing for me about Ron Suppa's book is how slowly and carefully I have been working through it. In my prior reading on scriptwriting, I would finish the books very quickly and I think it was because there just wasn't that much value in these books. It was either old and rehashed material or information that was mostly self-explanatory. I usually felt I was finishing the books without coming away with the help that I really needed.
With Mr. Suppa's new book, I notice how often I reread a sentence or paragraph and then think about how it might apply to my script. I don't recall ever doing that with any other scriptwriting books. So many of his statements are absolute pearls of useful information. Here's just one example out of the thousands in the book: "Screenplays are goal-oriented. The goal must be specific, clearly identifiable, as crucial to your character as life and death, and not subject to compromise. And yet, it is not the goal itself but the character's journey toward the goal that matters most." Great stuff! And worth taking a moment to think about.
If, when you finish this book, you want to know more about scriptwriting, read the book again. I am quite certain that you will learn about as much the second time around -- this book is loaded! I am not suggesting that this book "adds to the library of existing books on scriptwriting." I think you will find, as I did, that it replaces them. Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette ReviewIf you only plan on buying *one* wedding guide book, this should be it.
Peggy Post addresses almost every aspect of wedding etiquette in this hefty book. Although you can find most of this information on Internet sites, Peggy Post does a fantastic job of compiling wedding information in one easy-to-use volume.
Book highlights include:
- Exhaustively Thorough Invitation Section
(Example: Outlines specific language you should use if the bride's divorced/remarried parents are jointly hosting the wedding.)
- Engagement Outline
(Example: Gives recommendations for who the happy couple should tell, when, & how.)
- Guest Information
(Example: Discusses gift giving, response cards, etc.)
Peggy Post does an excellent job of conveying information without sounding preachy. She offers recommendations instead of barking standards.
In addition to being a great planning tool, this book is also quite lovely! As such, it would make a beautiful engagement gift.
