Much of the inner workings of the early years are explored in vivid detail. The battle between fundamentalism and evangelicalism pits Bill Graham against Bob Jones University. Bill Bright is forced to choice sides. This crisis moment, one of many throughout the history of this organization, is perfecftly set by the author in the crucible of the early emergence of evangelicalism. Though the book is about CCC and Bill Bright, it is properly subtitled "The Renewal of Evangelicalism in Postwar America" for in this work the reader catches the continual struggles, victories and setbacks for CCC as a microcosm of the entire movement, especially for parachurch organizations. Some of the historical narative in this work follows closely other biographies on Bill Bright. But this is the first histography to actually disclose both the good and the bad, the positive and the negative, with balance and objective historicity. Other biographical works have function as propoganda for CCC (Amazing Faith, I Found It). On the flip side, articles from Protestant liberal magazines on one end and fundamentalist (hear Bob Jones University Press) on the other end, have both presented Bill Bright as the antichrist, a tyrannt and heretic. Nice balance, good understanding of the 50s, 60s and 70s, allowing the reader, even if from more recent birth, to put their minds around the times. Soviet Baby Boomers: An Oral History of Russia's Cold War Generation (Oxford Oral History Series) ReviewAs one of the "Soviet baby-boomers" interviewed by the author, I'd been dying to see the book in print. The result of this fascinating project exceeded my expectations. For me, as it is, I'm sure, for my former classmates, it is a nostalgic trip down memory lane. For an outsider it will be an eye opener. I've lived and worked in the United States for over twenty years and I know from experience that the Americans' view of the Soviet Union is still, by and large, incomplete, at best, or distorted, at worst. Since the end of the Cold War, there appeared quite a few informative publications about the country: its economy, culture, politics, etc. But there was (until now!) a virtual vacuum of accurate information about its people. What makes this book unique is that, drawing from the conversations with numerous Soviet baby boomers, a generation born after a devastating war, it provides a rare insight into their lives, their values and aspirations. It might come as a huge surprise to some Western readers that those were formed not only by the values instilled in them by the country they were born and lived in but also by the Western world that seemingly they were shut off from by the Iron Curtain. Why and how they had access to that world, especially during the tumultuous 60's, why they enthusiastically and wholeheartedly supported Gorbachev's "perestroika" in the 80's is one of the most intriguing, in my view, parts of this amazing book. American baby-boomers are in for a follow-up surprise: despite the differences, they and their Soviet counterparts have a great deal in common. A realization that, I believe, is vital in the world we live in, the world of today and tomorrow.

Introduction to Proteins: Structure, Function, and Motion (Chapman & Hall/CRC Mathematical & Computational Biology) ReviewI have read this book with great interest and have decided to use this textbook in my classes on Structural Bioinformatics at the University of Southern California. Kessel and Ben-Tal have succeeded in putting material together, which I was not able to find in any other textbook. Focused on protein structure, the book combines aspects of structural and computational biology, which makes this a unique contribution. As for the level of detail provided in the book, complicated structural and biophysical aspects are well explained both in words and graphical illustrations. This textbook can therefore be used both in undergraduate and graduate student teaching. The book provides a comprehensive overview on what is known about general principles that determine protein structure, globular proteins, disordered proteins, protein-protein interactions, and in complex with various ligands. It provides guidelines for understanding the energetics of protein folding and stability; it describes models of molecular recognition and allostery as a basis 'for understanding protein-ligand interactions; and it explains biological functionality in these terms.' The book covers protein structure from water-soluble to membrane proteins, from globular to fibrilar proteins and from 'well behaved' to 'natively unstructured' proteins.' The book provides a deep understanding of protein structure, dynamics, 'and function. General principles are made intuitively clear based on 'specific examples. Each example is 'discussed within various contexts throughout the book and eventually 'the reader obtains a wide view on these carefully selected cases.' One interesting feature of the book is the emphasis on diseases. 'This includes explanations of the effects of genetic mutations on 'protein folding, stability, and dynamics as well as a brief introduction to rational drug discovery.' The book connects complicated aspects of structural biology to trivia as much as possible, without deviating too much from the main rout, making it a 'nice read. I can tell that my students liked it a lot.

India Handbook, 18th (Footprint - Handbooks) Review...I'm slightly disappointed with this latest edition (18th).
First, let me say that Footprint publishes the best travel guide to India, without question. With edition number 18, they're extending a LONG tradition of bringing India to the rest of the world with fantastic cultural insight. No other guide even comes close. Not Rough Guides. Not Lonely Planet. None.
Keep in mind that I'm comparing the present edition with previous editions, which is why I dropped a star. The new (18th) edition got a good makeover from the previous (17th) edition in certain regions, but was entirely neglected in others.
Bombay (Mumbai) got a nice update this time. So did Delhi, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat, however, and despite being the fastest growing state in the country, got nothing new at all. That means that this section is not only incomplete, but is significantly out of date. Quite simply India's most rapidly transforming state, it's hard to imagine why the editors failed to write a good update for fascinating Gujarat.
So, yes, it IS an updated edition, but only partially. That said, this book is really indispensable for the European, Australian, or North American traveling to India. It's written so very well, with keen cultural and historical insight without being the least bit boring. The practical information is SPOT ON, even if a few of the listings are outdated.
What makes this book so good is that it can be read at home before you depart, in your hotel room before a long day out, or on the fly while soaking up the experience, with equal enjoyment and effectiveness. This guide also does justice to extremely difficult Kashmir by presenting the best of the state ALONG with the inevitable risks. Trekkers, take note.

They provide practical guidance for interpreting the HIPAA security rule, in terms that the non-security professional can understand. Especially of value are the ideas on how to "implement" the security rule, broken down by the relevant HIPAA security standard. I agree with the practical approach that they take within the book, as it is consistent with the HIPAA message that I have also been communicating over the past several years. There are also useful lists of items needed to maintain security compliance after implementation. This is a good book for the novice and experienced privacy/security professional. It is nice to see that someone has compiled this much useful information into one book. Nice job ! Then They Came for Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival ReviewOddly enough I learned about this book while watching the author (a very likeable fellow) be interviewed on what I believe was THE DAILY SHOW. His sense of humor, obviously a protective device effectively used to keep his sanity despite the tragic losses of several important family members, was quite impressive. As the book jacket indicates this "A riveting, heart-wrenching memoir..." offering "insight into the past seventy years of regime change in Iran, as well as the future of a country where the democratic impulses of the youth continually clash with a government that becomes more totalitarian with each passing day. An intimate and fascinating account of contemporary Iran, it is also the moving and wonderfully written story of one family's extraordinary courage in the face of repression."
What has struck me most about the book was the author's deep devotion and dedication to getting the story out of what was happening in his native country. Much of the book describes the brutal treatment he receives from a ruthless interrogator he nicknames Rosewater after he is arrested for filming a peaceful demonstration protesting the rigging of an election where the incumbant had clearly NOT been reelected. The author is accused of working for American intelligence because of his coverage for NEWSWEEK magazine. Both the author's father and sister had at one time been arrested and imprisoned for their own political involvements. It is his British wife however and his brother-in-law who become instrumental in helping him get out of prison. During the time he is imprisoned, however, the author draws strength from remembering his father's and his sister's words.
The author concludes the book with an Epilogue, Acknowledgements, a Who's Who and a Time Line. I found the Time Line to be particularly helpful from a historical perspective even though the author admits: "This time line is not meant to be a history of Iran. Rather, it is designed to provide information on some of the events in the book while highlighting Iran's ongoing struggle for self-determination since 1906."
It can be said that the average American often takes for granted the freedoms he has been guaranteed by our Constitution: i.e. freedom from unlawful arrest and imprisonment, freedom to peaceful demonstration, freedom to democratically elect our governing officials by a majority vote. This cannot be said of all countries in the world. Some, like Iran, are still struggling to develop a democratic government. The author seems hopeful that the younger generations might be successful in this endeavor but, of course, it still appears to be a work in progress. I would highly recommend this book especially for those of us in the world concerned about human rights violations.Then They Came for Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival Overview

He gives the patient the tools and information as to how to choose doctors, hospitals and ancillary services with great knowledge and insight. Dr.Kussin informs the patient about which questions to ask and what are good and bad answers. He arms the patient/consumer with the resources to question doctors decisions and when to seek other views by making shared decisions. Dr.Kussin helps us feel safe making choices to stay local or seek tertiary care.
In summary Dr.Kussin has made available to the patient the tools to come to that coveted place of being an "insider" and better interpret the topsy turvy world of current medical care.

Messengers ReviewAt first glance, David Arnett's new novel entitled "Messengers" may seem apocalyptic in theme and scope, yet it thankfully has little to do with the current fixation on 2012 or any other Doomsday prophesy. Instead, Arnett's first person narrative centers around ordinary citizen Jake Daniels as he recounts the extraordinary events that lead him from the scene of a near fatal accident to revelation after revelation in relation to the dawning of a new world and his unique and important role in initiating a relevant change stemming from the spirit.
Indeed, rather than forecasting doom, gloom or portending a major shift based on cosmological changes, Arnett's novel suggests a change of mindset. "Messengers" mirrors the major theme of the recent series `Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt: A Novel' crafted by former vampire aficionada Anne Rice where the reader explores Christ and his mission from the vantage point of Christ's personal experience told in his own words.
Now if that doesn't seem ambitious wait until you get into Arnett's story. As in all good tales of spiritual transformation, Jake sees his life flash before his eyes as he escapes from near death due to the miraculous guidance of a beautiful and compelling woman who warns him to move out of harm's way just moments before a truck careens into his lane of traffic. As he recovers, marveling over his good luck, Jake ponders the advent of the woman, viewing her appearance as more than just a hopeful fantasy or coincidence. His fascination metamorphoses into an obsession as the artist in him manically captures her image and especially her mesmerizing eyes on canvas. Using his portrait, Jake embarks on a mission to discover who and what she is and why she saved his life. Deciding that spirituality trade fairs are a good starting point, he travels from venue to venue gathering information regarding his apparition until like all good angels of prophesy or otherwise, she makes herself known to him through the medium of dream. He discerns her name--Ariel or Uriel--and eventually her function as the angel of transformation who ignites within him the notion that a new facet of his life is about to begin.
And as it is told, at thirty years of age Jake begins a spiritual training in which each of the four Watchers, Uriel, Raphael, Gabriel and Michael appear to him and strengthen him to do battle with the build-up of evil man has wrought. As he grows, he sculpts his mantra from the two great commandments of Christ: Love God and Love thy Neighbor as Thyself. The more he realizes the profound magnitude of these simple truths the more fortified he becomes--so much so that power emanates from his heart chakra with such force he can literally pin recipients to the wall and wash their souls with a love so tremendous they tremble in its wake. Miracles of healing ensue as Jake's life emulates that of Christianity's most beloved master and teacher and eventually, the reader understands that like Gibran's "Prophet" the son of Man has again been born to another woman, has gone through the trials and tribulations of the devil and with the help of God's messengers, the angels, has again realized who he is and what he must again do.
Technically speaking and strictly from a reader's perspective, Arnett's "Messengers" could be slightly more engaging. He employs a first person narrative with little dialogue and lots of inner chatter that for the most part `tells' but doesn't always `show.' However, as this is supposedly Jake's journal written while incarcerated, it makes some sense to voice some of Jake's incredulity regarding his own developing skills while encountering his angelic helpers. Arnett's knowledge of angels proves to be extensive and informative while his burgeoning Christ figure acts with characteristic calm control, humility and gratitude for his ability to channel the ultimate power of God's love.
Bottom line? In David Arnett's "Messengers," main character and narrator Jake Daniels discovers his true calling through the supernatural intervention of the major archangels. Jake's story takes him through self-doubt to a full acknowledgement of his new-found self-identity that will also journey the reader through the perilous steps necessary for all those called to do the work of God. Some of Jake's Job-like trials may seem tedious at times, but, for the most part, "Messengers" is fraught with great information and a wondrous theme of the power of infinite love. Recommended for all those who understand the strength of acceptance, compassion and love.
