The authors--Ezra Susser, Sharon Schwartz, Alfredo Morabia, and Evelyn Bromet--build upon a framework for causation, explicated in the final pages of the book, that capitalizes on the conceptual strengths of the counterfactual model Rothman and Greenland employ in Modern Epidemiology (Lippincott, 1998) and the validity scheme of Shadish, Cook, and Campbell (2002). They present epidemiologic concepts with narrative cohesion, drawing on an impressive array of examples that highlights both the diversity and creativity of psychiatric epidemiologists. Parts II-V progress logically and lucidly across the terrain of study design; the authors efficiently present epidemiology's signature cohort and case-control designs and the related issues of confounding, attrition, misclassification, and choice of controls. Part VI is devoted to data analysis, rendered especially clear and accessible with the contributions of biotstatistician Melissa Begg. Likewise, Part VII, which engages genetic causes, the various study designs employed to study them, and new insights, is enriched greatly by geneticist Mary-Claire King. Finally, Part VIII comprises several chapters that address the need to think about causation as complex, multi-level, and dynamic; for considering the future of epidemiology, these chapters are particularly salient.
