Your Friendly Neighborhood Criminal Review
Van Rooy has a fine sense of wit, balancing humor and crime in ex-con Monty Haaviko, a crooked man dedicated to a "straight" life, the experience of his past safely tucked away for future reference. Married to the equally pragmatic Claire, the pair has maintained a balance where Haaviko can still make a living- if sometimes a bit shady- but operates a far cry from any activities that might capture the attention of law enforcement and lead back to prison, wife and baby son Monty's absolute priorities. The fact that he may have to address some social inequities in his work only adds to the reader's enjoyment. The beneficiaries of Haaviko's lessons are always bad actors who need to be taught a lesson, Monty's McGuyverish methods innovative and uniquely successful, violence wrought of odds and ends, but just as effective.
When Manitoba-based activist Marie Blue Duck engages Haaviko to set up a smuggling route for illegal immigrants, he has no real objection. The money's good, the risk minor, other than for those who would muscle in on Marie's route for transporting their own goods (guns, drugs). Haaviko must neutralize these opportunists and does so with his usual creativity. When an old friend arrives with a desire for the straight life, Monty and Claire are happy to accommodate. Always one step ahead, Haaviko tackles each phase of his task with an eye to protecting his family and resisting temptation, though it always exists for an ex-con and drug addict. Certainly it is his criminal past that makes Haaviko such an engaging character and Van Rooy exploits this fact with great humor. A unique protagonist in a crowded genre, Haaviko fills a niche both dark and light, a good-natured ex-crook who doesn't dent his nature. Sadly, Van Rooy passed away. His wonderful voice will be missed. Luan Gaines/2011.

Bloodline Review
Serial killers. The gift that keeps on giving. Fifteen years earlier London had been horrified by a string of gruesome murders perpetrated by Raymond Garvey. Three years ago Garvey dies in prison from a massive brain tumor. Now X-ray fragments found clutched in the hands of a new series of victims suggests someone is targeting the children of Garvey's victims. As Tom Thorne applies his particular talent for solving unusual murders to the new cases, it is apparent why Billingham is such a popular crime writer in England. Unsettled by a recent turn in his relationship with Louise Porter, a detective in another department, Thorne is frequently distracted by the tragedy the couple has faced, both parties still tentative with one another. At the same time, his instincts are critical in understanding this murderer's bizarre scenario, the crooked paths of this killer's mind. Thorne wants to get inside the brain of the murderer- but only deep enough to catch him. A bit standoffish to other detectives, Thorne is nevertheless thorough and well-respected. That his interior conflicts are revealed only humanizes this protagonist, making him a sympathetic character with an apt name.
Serial killers fascinate scientists, baffle law enforcement and terrify the public, but generate a lot of press, civic paranoia rising with each new murder, as well as pressure on the authorities to catch the killer. Billingham balances all these aspects in a tight plot with the odd bit of black humor to relieve the tension. The quirky Thorne is drawn to the hunt, the murderer's mind set haunting his thoughts on and off the job: "It's dark beats, the twisted melody of it. Like the first song you hear on the radio every morning that stays in your head all day." Familiar territory to this detective, never a disappointment to fans who expect a riveting denouement. Luan Gaines/2011.

Thirteen Million Dollar Pop: A Frank Behr Novel ReviewTwo of the main appeals of David Levien's novels are his intricate plots and his multi-demensional characters.
In this novel, Frank Behr is a relatively new employee at the Caro Group, private investigators and personal security advisors.
As the story begins, he's on a security detail for Bernard Kolodnik. This was supposed to be an easy assignment but someone attempts to kill Kolodnik. However, Frank's quick reflexes saves him.
Frank is treated like a hero at work but wants answers. When he asks about the official investigation, he's stonewalled.
The next day, the governor appoints Kolodink as a replacement when the senior senator from Indiana resigns to fight advanced prostate cancer.
The story describes a real estate developer whose development included a casino which needed to be approved. The developer and an official in Kolodnik's staff conspire to put the developer and Kolodnik together. The result was supposed to be a quick sale and a payoff of thirteen million dollars. However, the economy and other factors stalled the development. Now that Kolodnik is a public official, he leaves his business dealings behind.
The author explores Frank's goal of solving the crime. However, he's also a compassionate man and we witness his tender moments while with his girlfriend, Susan, who is nearing her delivery date. In addition, Frank is also a man who helps people who have been unjustly treated. I felt that Frank was the type of character who would always be against bullies and attempt to do something when people were being mistreated. This made me appreciate Frank even more.
Thinking of what character in literature that Frank reminded me of, I would compare him to Tom Joad of "The Grapes of Wrath." Joad, like Frank, feels an obligation to help the workers who were being bullied by crooked officials.
The pacing of the novel is masterful. As the story reaches it's culmination, various factors connect and things speed up like a hurricane as action continues and suspense mounts.
Frank is the kind of person everyone would want for a friend. His character is well drawn and comes alive in the story.
This is one of the best mysteries of the year and shouldn't be missed.Thirteen Million Dollar Pop: A Frank Behr Novel Overview
