Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue ReviewThe large animal rescue field is small; and, though it has been around since the 1990s is in its infancy really, considering how few emergency responders (police, fire, ambulance, animal control) are trained. While many responders are exposed to SMALL animals such as dogs and cats in their work, what is the likelihood of exposure to horses, llamas, or livestock? For most, the closest they will ever get to a horse is watching a race; the closest they will get to livestock is eating it. But what happens when they are confronted with a panicked, injured animal in the field? Many are injured; some have died; many of the animals are injured further or die. Large animal rescue is dangerous in ways they just don't understand.
Drs. Rebecca and Tomas Gimenez have written an outstanding manual on the subject. Along with their compatriots on the west coast, Deb and John Fox, they have defined the "gold standard" in large animal rescue, and it shows in this book.
When I was researching "Save Your Horse! A Horse Owner's Guide to Large Animal Rescue", the Gimenezes were very supportive and forthcoming with technical expertise and advice. I was amazed at their depth of knowledge and willingness to share. Their passion for this subject and determination to spread the training throughout the emergency responder world shines through everything do.
LAR training is a "tough sell" right now. Most agencies have cut back funding for training; many are even cutting staff. While actually sending staff to participate in training may be beyond their financial capabilities, an excellent resource is available to them for little monetary outlay. ALL emergency responders should have access to this book through their work. If you are a responder, please encourage your department to purchase a copy. If you are a horse or livestock owner who may someday require the services of responders to extricate your animal from a life-threatening situation, buy a few books and donate them.
When it comes to saving lives, we all need to step up and help. This book is an excellent way to do just that. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in large animals or who wants to keep our responders safe. For further information on LAR, [...]

Nancy Caroline's Emergency Care in the Streets, Sixth Edition ReviewI understand that as a paramedic student you don't usually have your choice of which book to go by for the class, but if this is the book that you're using you're in luck. The book is a very good source of information and it does a good job of not making everything boring as it includes pictures and cartoons in all of it's chapters. At the same time though, it doesn't overdo it with the cartoons as some books will do. The book also references a website which I have used quite a bit for the vocabulary. In the back of the book there is a section containing all of the drugs we use and plenty of detail on each of them. The only chapter of the book that we aren't using is the Cardiac Emergencies chapter, as we are using a completely separate cardiology book. Our college gave the instructors a choice of which book they wanted to use for our class, and they chose this because it would "best prepare us for the national registry testing."Nancy Caroline's Emergency Care in the Streets, Sixth Edition Overview

Clinical Procedures in Emergency Medicine: Expert Consult - Online and Print, 5e (Roberts, Clinical Procedures in Emergency Medicine) ReviewI am currently training in a very busy level 1 trauma center in the US and have to do all sorts of procedures on my patients all the time. This book is absolutely the best text out there detailing all the procedures which you would ever have to do in your practice as an emergency physician. It is detailed, illustrated and lucid. It inspires confidence. All the relevant details are listed out there and it also warns about the common pitfalls and mistakes made by most.
This latest edition includes some of the newer US guided procedures as well.
An absolute must have for all physicians.Clinical Procedures in Emergency Medicine: Expert Consult - Online and Print, 5e (Roberts, Clinical Procedures in Emergency Medicine) Overview

Critical Care Nursing: Diagnosis and Management, 6e (Thelans Critical Care Nursing Diagnosis) ReviewI'm so happy I ordered this book. I'm new to critical care nursing in a consortium and this book has better explained things and helped to tie it all together from the lectures. If you have been out of school for a while the A&P reviews of systems at the beginning of the chapters are to the point, short but with enough info to jog your memory.Critical Care Nursing: Diagnosis and Management, 6e (Thelans Critical Care Nursing Diagnosis) Overview
