ACT in Practice: Case Conceptualization in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ReviewI've been receiving training in ACT for several years and am familiar with the small library of ACT books available right now. This one is my favorite - it's a very readable and yet thorough guide. ACT principles and techniques are nicely blended with a presentation of theory and philosophy - and it is done in a way that is accessible to those who are relatively unfamiliar with behavior analysis. I wish I'd had access to this book during graduate school! This is the perfect resource for anyone who has just begun to explore this therapy and its theoretical and philosophical background.ACT in Practice: Case Conceptualization in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Overview

Counseling Adults in Transition: Linking Practice With Theory ReviewI used this book extensively when designing and conducting research on master's degree student transitions. The book is clear, well-organized, and extremely helpful to all that work with students in higher education. The theoretical framework the authors provide/use will serve to enlighten and guide counselors, advisors, higher education administrators, and other institutional representatives as they attempt to help students and other adults transition into, through, and out of college and/or other transitional stages. I highly recommend this book to all of my colleagues and constantly refer to it when working with students.Counseling Adults in Transition: Linking Practice With Theory Overview

Child Abuse and Neglect: Diagnosis, Treatment and Evidence - Expert Consult: Online and Print, 1e ReviewThis book, recently published, is one of the most comprehensive references on child abuse currently available. It includes just about everything you might want to know about child abuse, from epidemiology, to diagnosis and treatment and everything else in between. It makes a very good case for shaken baby syndrome and does a very nice job of putting together the biological as well as the anecdotal evidence for its existence. It includes items not usually thought of as child abuse, such as a chapter on drug-facilitated sexual assault. Adolescents are still subject to child abuse, something not often considered. I found the weakest subject in the book the chapter on international issues in child maltreatment, which gets only cursory treatment. My experience with child abuse in Latin America and Asia is that it can be a very difficult issue to raise in many legal systems, and physicians are much less likely to report its occurrence, even when taking cultural issues into account.
Overall, this is is an excellent reference that anyone involved with child abuse should read.Child Abuse and Neglect: Diagnosis, Treatment and Evidence - Expert Consult: Online and Print, 1e Overview

A Clinician's Guide to 12-Step Recovery: Integrating 12-Step Programs into Psychotherapy ReviewFrom John Howard Prin, author of The Roadmap to Lifelong Recovery and Secret Keeping: Overcoming Hidden Habits and Addictions
As an experienced counselor who helps people trapped in stubborn addictions, I am grateful for the ways this book opened my eyes to numerous insights and useful concepts. The author, Mark Schenker, PhD, carefully lays out in plain language the many ways that psychology and the 12 Steps could work together -- but so seldom have, due to prejudice, misinformation, and stereotypes.
Dr. Schenker makes the case that mental health professionals who still refuse to learn about or use the 12-Step approach with alcoholic or drug-addicted clients are rejecting a powerful tool set. Both approaches, professional psychotherapy and peer-based 12 Steps (AA, NA, Al-Anon meetings, etc.), have much to offer the suffering individual as well as the families and friends who suffer with them.
One of the main points of contention between these differing approaches is the central role of spirituality embedded in the 12-Step model. Dr. Schenker has clearly spelled out the ways the 12 Steps can open up the possibility of profound personal transformation. Stable sobriety involves more than saying no to alcohol or drugs; it means saying yes to significant changes in self-concept, thinking, lifestyle, and values. This transformation is the true reward of life changes based on sound spiritual development. For many, the spiritual dimension becomes a vital avenue to healing, serenity, acceptance, and the daily experience of an inner world that is more peaceful and an outer world that reflects fewer struggles.
Support for these points derives from the author's meticulous exploration of the research of pioneering figures such as William James, Carl Jung, Ernest Kurtz, Gregory Bateson, Harry Tiebout, Bill Wilson (author of the AA Big Book), and certain Zen masters.
The author's main contribution? Bringing to light the numerous strengths and advantages of 12 Step recovery for lay persons and professionals alike, especially his encouraging words for psychotherapists whose attitudes and skills with addictive clients can be enhanced. As someone who uses both approaches daily with my clients -- Positive Psychology and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, for example, along with 12-Step principles and group methods -- I am privileged to observe the powerful results of this marvelous combination of healing. My hope is that more people will become aware of how both approaches improve the lives of recovering individuals.

Psychology ReviewI approached the book with scepticism but to my surprise and to the credit of the author and the profession of psychology, they don't proclaim to know it all. The limits of science and psychology are acknowledged and talked about which I think was well needed, like the rest of us they are only human too. You can see that a lot of time and energy has gone in to making this book what it is. Psychology and all the terminology that goes with it make it appear to the laymen as being quite arcane and only for academics and those interested in university courses. This book brings it all out and explains it in a way that not only makes the subject matter interesting but easier to grasp than if presented in a book of lesser quality. The content matter helps you to see the human condition from a logical and thoroughly researched angle and is certainly of college quality as that is what the book was originally intended for.
If you are considering studying psychology or would just like to know what it is all about then certainly buy this book the content is comprehensive with information and chapters to do with learning, sensation, the developing person, states of consciousness, emotion, memory, personality, psychological disorders and many more with too much to detail here.

The sections of the text that explain the scientific method are interesting and could be applied to most areas of life. As I learnt we tend to make errors of judgments all of the time in relation to other countries, cultures, people, and just about everything else. That is one of this books best points and also one of it's main themes and that is that it's all about thinking smarter, thinking outside the box, avoiding assumptions and the overuse of heuristics, examining matters in a more methodical and careful way and developing the ability to see events and issues from another perspective and more objectively. In short and as is stated in the book "Don't believe everything you think".
To gain a good understanding of the concepts presented in the book requires concentration and quite a lot of time spent reading because the text is so comprehensive.
Just a few snippets of the information that I found interesting were;
1. Psychology had its roots in philosophy
2. Everything psychological is biological, we are a mind embodied.
3. Sleep deprivation and how our sleep debt can accumulate for up to two weeks.
4. The differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
5. Theory X vs. Theory Y workplace managers.
6. Howard Gardner's theory that intelligence is divided into 8 categories words, music, numbers, space, self, people, body/movement, nature.
7. Self reliant individualism vs. socially connected collectivism with the pros and cons of both.
8. Operant conditioning and classical conditioning and how cognition plays it's part.
9. The different parenting styles such as Authoritative, Authoritarian, and just plain old destructive indifference.
10. The fundamental attribution error (This is one that everyone should know)
Because this book is 700+ pages, interesting illustrations and photographs add to the overall quality of the book and assist the reader to understand the text, though the web site that accompanies the book helps you to reinforce what you have already read and learnt. The Psychsim 5 online tutorials were I thought very good with animations, flash cards, and various other online activities that all combine to make for some very interesting, interactive learning.
The bottom line: The book presents you with a foison of facts and an extraordinary amount of knowledge that you can use in your every day life as-well to understand yourself and others better or prepare and use for a university course, it also goes a long way to blowing popular and often wrong and ill informed bubble gum psychology out of the water. Psychology with this book is fun and you will get a lot out of it, well worth the money even with the US dollar converted to Australian.
Here's a thought, it wouldn't hurt to see some of this material about psychology taught in schools and the workplace to up people's emotional intelligence, and more to the point why is it not common practice already?

Behavioral Consultation and Primary Care: A Guide to Integrating Services ReviewI purchased this book and within the first few pages it refers to the CD that comes with it. I did not receive that CD and it seems it is instrumental in using the book and helping patients. How do I get one? I also did not receive a receipt in the box. The book itself is excellent and I would highly recommend it to anyone entering into a setting whereby integration of services is the norm or happening.Behavioral Consultation and Primary Care: A Guide to Integrating Services Overview
