Uncompromised: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of an Arab American Patriot in the CIA ReviewNada Prouty, through her own wit, intelligence and courage, escapes an awful family life in Lebanon and immigrates to the United States. She has her eye on the future and is willing to work hard and educate herself to have a better future. In some ways this is a typical immigrant story - upon arrival to the US they settle in an area where many of their former countrymen have settled, who proceed to take advantage of the newcomers, by paying them poor wages. At any rate, I really admire her grit and determination and intelligence and she achieves the impossible, she works for the FBI and later the CIA. She describes callow treatment by fellow male agents at the time, which was the '80's. I dealt with these attitudes professionally at that time so I wasn't shocked and this part of the story didn't interest me that much. Thankfully much of this attitude has changed for the better. As an expert in Hezbollah, Arab culture and language as well as being very very brave, Nada risks her life more than once in her job. Unfortunately, after 9/11 she is turned on by her peers and government and the attempt is made to try her as a spy. This is sadly very believable. She suffers character slurs, incredible stress and the stupidity of the government when they are after you. Eventually she is found innocent of the charges. After going through all this I really expected this section of the book to be very passionate!! Instead, it seems to me that Ms. Prouty is wandering around somewhat lost wondering over and over how this could happen to her. This woman, who willingly goes into war torn parts of the world and takes on very risky assignments, seems to me to fade out at this point. I expected her to kick someone's tin can down the street! I was also perturbed at how long she puts up with the emotional abuse from her parents and her own brother, a moronic dillatante who puts her life at risk, helping to set her up as a spy. Again, this extremely intelligent and brave woman can't tell these people to get lost? I found that difficult to understand. Perhaps it is a cultural difference, I can't say. Perhaps I only want people to be and act as I think they 'should'....and you know, sometimes people are frustrating ...! (said tongue in cheek At any rate it is interesting to read Ms Prouty's story, her ability to leave the country where she was born and create a new life with dedication and grace is inspiring. I gave it 3 stars because the writing didn't seem to convey the importance and impact of what was happening in her life.Uncompromised: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of an Arab American Patriot in the CIA OverviewWant to learn more information about Uncompromised: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of an Arab American Patriot in the CIA?
