Mood Matters: From Rising Skirt Lengths to the Collapse of World Powers ReviewMood Matters is great fun to read as Casti's writing throughout is smooth, intelligent and humorous. The message of the book - that the mood of a society dictates what will happen rather than the reverse - is counterintuitive at first sight, but supported by many quite surprising and convincing examples. Using various indicators, in particular stock-market prices, to measure the mood of a society, Casti explores the correlation between the "mood of the crowd" and a range of other trends (skirtlengths, car colour - sounds bizarre but is actually remarkable!) and events, including the fall of nations and the outbreak of war. It is a hugely interesting and wide-ranging study. As someone with only a moderate interest in economics, I read this book for stimulation and entertainment. Research Methods for Social Psychology ReviewI taught a senior thesis course on experimental social psychology for the first time this semester as a graduate instructor and this book was very helpful! Unfortunately, it was too late in the semester to assign this book to my students, but I used it extensively to create my lectures and assignments. I will definitely consider making this book required for my students if I teach this course again in the future. If I had to choose between assigning this book and the APA Style Manual, I have to say, I would choose this one :). There is already plenty of free information about the APA style on the internet.
This book includes detailed descriptions of all parts of experimental research, from deciding what to research, designing an experiment, writing up a report, and presenting the findings. It was easy to flip through the book to find information on specific stages of research. Also, I think this book is easy to read--not overwhelming for undergrads.
The only thing that would make this book even more comprehensive is a more detailed section on data analysis using SPSS, but this is a very minor issue, as plenty of books already exist on using SPSS.
I'm hoping that this book would be printed in paperback in the future or would otherwise go down in price.Research Methods for Social Psychology Overview
