Gray's Clinical Neuroanatomy: The Anatomic Basis for Clinical Neuroscience, 1e (Gray's Anatomy) ReviewI was a little leery of buying a Gray's Anatomy anything because of the historical Gray's anatomy that everyone gives to aspiring pre-med students as a gift- the tiny print and tiny black and white drawings are of historical interest but not anything you could read.
This book solved most of those problems. It is based on the old Grays anatomy, but the pages are twice as big, the drawings are visible, and it is updated with MRI images and case studies.
I hate to admit it, but it is perfect for what I need - Basic pictures and explanations. I am long out of medical school and a primary care provider and this provides most of what I need to refresh my memory and to show patients. The case studies are mostly galloping horses, not zebras, (sigh) but I am definitely in horse territory. Zebras are why God made the internet.
It might be a good resource for college level neuroscience. It is not detailed enough for medical school neuroscience, or for serious study of neurology or radiology. If you are going to medical school, wait and buy the recommended texts.Gray's Clinical Neuroanatomy: The Anatomic Basis for Clinical Neuroscience, 1e (Gray's Anatomy) Overview

Handbook of Basal Ganglia Structure and Function, Volume 20 (Handbook of Behavioral Neuroscience) ReviewThis book is an extremely well-written, comprehensive review of the structure and function of the basal ganglia. It has been traditional to view behavior from a cortico-centric viewpoint, at the expense of considering the contribution of subcortical brain regions to adaptation. This "Handbook" represents a giant leap forward in understanding the roles of the basal ganglia, both in health and disease. This book is essential reading and reference material for anyone, in any behavior-related profession, who would like to understand the range and scope of basal ganglia contributions to behavior.

An Introduction to Neural Networks ReviewThis is one of the best books I have ever read. It introduces neural networks, with a strong emphasis on biological plausibility. For example, the book compares the visual systems of simple animals with neural network feature extraction. Anderson moves effectively among evolutionary biology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and behavioral psychology. His insights are important, clear, and often funny as well. The book gently introduces source code for implementing the various neural networks that he describes. An Introduction to Neural Networks Overview

The Hippocampus Book (Oxford Neuroscience Series) ReviewI have been interested in the hippocampus - and indeed the whole limbic system - for many years and this is a superb review of our current knowledge about this essential region of the brain.
I was thinking that people who might be interested in this magnum opus will not need to be told what the hippocampus is. But for those of us who like to pick up things by browsing reviews, let me explain. It is a small part of the brain in the deep parts of the temporal lobes. It is named hippocampus because it is thought to resemble a seahorse. Although German pathologists were convinced that it looked more like a silk worm, so for years that's what the Germans called it.
It is primarily involved in the formation of new memories and in navigation. But despite its extreme importance it is easily damaged by hypoglycemia, anoxia or an array of toxins, particularly alcohol. It is also one of the first regions of the brain to suffer damage in Alzheimer's disease. Therefore the hippocampus has become one of the most widely studies regions in the brain, with almost 78,000 research papers at last count. Yet it is many years since there we last had a single comprehensive source of information on it.
It says in the preface that this book is an "attempt to provide a reasonably comprehensive review of hippocampal research, as viewed through many eyes and collected with a wide variety of methods.
The book consists of over 800 large pages and there are sixteen chapters by some of the biggest names in the field of "hippocampology."
1. The Hippocampal Formation, by Per Andersen, Richard Morris, David Amaral, Timothy Bliss, and John O'Keefe
2. Historical Perspective: Proposed Functions, Biological Characteristics, and Neurobiological Models of the Hippocampus, by Per Andersen, Richard Morris, David Amaral, Timothy Bliss, and John O'Keefe
3. Hippocampal Neuroanatomy, by David Amaral and Pierre Lavenex
4. Morphological Development of the Hippocampus, by Michael Frotscher and Laszlo Seress
5. Structural and Functional Properties of Hippocampal Neurons, by Nelson Spruston and Chris McBain
6. Synaptic Function, by Dimitri M. Kullmann
7. Molecular Mechanisms of Synaptic Function in the Hippocampus: Neurotransmitter Exocytosis, Glutamatergic, GABAergic and Cholinergic Transmission, by Pavel Osten, William Wisden, and Rolf Sprengel
8. Local Circuits, by Eberhard Buhl and Miles Whittington
9. Structural Plasticity, by Elizabeth Gould
10. Synaptic Plasticity in the Hippocampus, by Timothy Bliss, Graham Collingridge, and Richard Morris
11. Hippocampal Neurophysiology in the Behaving Animal, by John O'Keefe
12. Functional Roll of the Human Hippocampus, by Craig Stark
13. Theories of Hippocampal Function, by Richard Morris
14. Computational Models of the Spatial and Mnemonic Functions of the Hippocampus, by Neil Burgess
15. Stress and the Hippocampus, by Richard Morris
16. The Hippocampus and Human Disease, by Matthew Walker, Dennis Chan, and Maria Thom
This is the best book on the hippocampus that I know of in any of the major European languages. The editors acknowledge the two problems with the book. First the literature is enormous and growing day by day. Indeed, between the time that the book went to the printers and this review, almost 5,000 more papers have come out. Second the breadth of the field constantly expands, as new technologies and methods are applied to understanding it. So the authors and not only neuroscientists but also range from mathematicians to clinicians.
This is the "go to" book for anyone wanting to gain an understanding of this crucial region of the brain, and who needs to get their bearings before diving into that fast flowing river of new papers. The Hippocampus Book (Oxford Neuroscience Series) Overview

From Molecules to Networks, Second Edition: An Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience ReviewOverall, I was really pleased with this textbook. I originally ordered it as reference material for a computational neuroscience project, and it didn't disappoint. It covers pretty much all the relevant areas of molecular neuroscience, including ion channels and gates, properties of membranes, neurotransmission/modulation, receptors and protein configurations, genetic processes, neural circuits - even pathological information related to neurodegenerative diseases as an added bonus. It has a number of sections and a chapter dedicated to quantitative analysis, as well as touching on the use of NEURON or other software packages, which made it a great resource for my project.
I think one of the reasons the text really does well is each section is written by leading experts in the field. The chapter dealing with LTP and NMDA dependent Hebbian plasticity is written (amongst others) by Kevin LeBar and Joseph LeDoux, ion channels by David Young, Yuh Nung Jan, and Lily Yeh Jan, and is edited by John H Byrne and James L Roberts with lots of material in each chapter by them as well.
The second edition is very current, and contains a lot of information that generally isn't available on the web, with specifics from medical and science journals. Great stuff. From Molecules to Networks, Second Edition: An Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience Overview

Development of the Nervous System, 2nd Edition Review"Development of the Nervous System" is a textbook which appears to be an introductory text to the field. The textbook is supposed to be appropriate for undergraduates, however, as a biology graduate student with some previous exposure to neurobiology, I had some difficulties with the text because of some of the reasons mentioned below.
It was difficult not to be distracted by the numerous grammatical and spelling errors. There were so many of them (for example, 'roll' when the authors meant 'role' and 'spacial' instead of 'spatial'), I wondered if the text were ever edited.
Even without the mistakes in English, the textbook suffers from other flaws. One major problem is that the authors do not bother to explain basic terms or concepts before using them when describing experiments. For example, the authors never define the difference between 'afferent' and 'efferent' neuronal projections, but refer to the terms profusely. Ironically, one of the most common grammatical errors in the textbook was the use of 'effect' when the authors meant 'affect.'
A colleague of mine who borrowed the book from me remarked that the index was not very useful; I also noticed some mistakes in the index.
Having said that, one of the major strengths of the text is the organization of the chapters, which proceed logically from the earliest neural induction events to the behavior of a whole organism. The introductory paragraphs of each chapter are also well written; they relate the topics to something that should be tangible to everyone.
Another major strength is the introduction of concepts by discussing the experiments behind them. Importantly, the text describes experiments from many different model organisms and using a variety of techniques. Abundant figures accompany the text and sufficiently illustrate concepts and experiments.
The content of the textbook is decent, but to be more useful (especially as an introductory text), this textbook would benefit from:
1) editing for English
2) an improved, more thorough and accurate index
3) a glossary or definitions and explanations within the text
4) and perhaps side "boxes" explaining some of the experimental techniques discussed.Development of the Nervous System, 2nd Edition Overview

Dendritic Spines ReviewThis new monograph on the dendritic spine belongs on the shelves of all neuroscients--after having been at the bedside for reading because one can't put it down. An obvious scholar as well as researcher, Yuste synthesizes a very large amount of data into an orderly series of chapters that describes the spine from the dendritic shaft to the most distal point of the filopodium. Starting with history and an homage to Cajal, Yuste starts by clearly articulating his biases. He then proceeds to discuss in nicely compartmentalized chapters everything from the structure of the spine to spines as calcium compartments to computational aspects of spine function. Although each chapter can be throught of as appealing to morphologists or physiologists or pharmacologists, the clear exposition and fluid writing make reading chapters "outside" of ones area of expertise a pleasure, and one rapidlly begins to assemble a sense of the spine. The only shortcoming is that even Yuste doesn't yet formally approach the issue of global behavior and spines---although comments scattered through the book (particularly in early and late chapters) leaves the reader with impressions of possible spine contributions. In an era of escalating prices that often places books out of the hands of readers, this volume, even with glosy color plates, is so modestly priced that one would have no hesitation in assigning it as a text for a class, leaving plenty of money left over to to discuss the spine at a local bar.Dendritic Spines Overview

Principles of Neural Science ReviewI read this book in medical school. Although I would agree that it is probably to basic science oriented for a medical school neuroscience course, it was enjoyable, thorough, and inspirational. There are few books in my life that took as complex a topic as how the brain works and made it comprehensible. It is not a crib sheet for passing medical school exams. It is the first book I would recommend for anyone seriously interested in an understanding of the brain, sensory processes, etc... For anyone for whom a fundamental grounding in neuroscience is important this is the book.Principles of Neural Science Overview
