The Navy ReviewThis is the best historical book about the United States Navy that I have ever found. This book tells the story of the United States Navy from the formation of our country to what is foreseen in the 21st century in clear and simple English without any relevent inconsistancies or gaps. You'll never be bored reading this because for about every 50 words of informative text there is a picture to back it up or at least give you an idea what they're talking about and keeps you interested by giving you an image to view. The most interesting feature of all is the offical seal of the United States Navy that buldges out on the front of the leather hardcover with the feel of a real metal seal which brings this astonishing feeling of pride for our United States Navy. So whether you are a naval serviceman (or servicewoman), or an interested civilian, this book is as good as it gets for information or a display of pride for the US Navy that is worth every penny.The Navy Overview

Neptune's Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal ReviewFirst, the recommendation: If you read naval history books, or a WWII history buff, this is a must-read book. Hornfischer has captured the full scope of the Navy's action at Guadalcanal, within the larger picture of the whole campaign. It's a big story.
WWII buffs know Guadalcanal as the pivotal campaign where the Allies fought Japan from an offensive posture to a defensive one. Less well understood is that the US Navy made the first effective use of electronically directed fire at Guadalcanal. This created an immediate advantage for the Allies, and helped win the campaign, but stubbornness and lack of understanding of the new technology prevented it from being used to the fullest extent. Until Guadalcanal, navies still steamed in lines, attempting to "cross the T". After Guadalcanal, they started to understand how radar changed everything. This is just one of the many sub-plots that Hornfischer successfully weaves into his big picture.
The Guadalcanal campaign lasted six months. It's all here: every battle and every ship. It even feels like every shell is also here, as Hornfischer describes the damage caused by each ship's battery of 5 inch through 16 inch guns. You really get a sense of the pressure the Navy was under as each ship was sunk (including carriers, battleships, cruisers and 25 destroyers!) or retired from battle due to damage. In the end, after tremendous losses on both sides, the Japanese quit the struggle. Their ship and aircraft losses had been similar to those of the Allies, but theirs were irreplaceable, while the Allies were just starting to ramp up production of ships, aircraft, soldiers, sailors & aircrews.
Highly recommended.

The Battle of Midway (Pivotal Moments in American History) ReviewCraig Symond's new book may very well be the one that anyone deeply interested in its subject has long been waiting for--a book that tells the entire Midway story with all of the latter-day research and revelations that have enhanced or sometimes changed our understandings of the event.
There are two good reasons for that. One, Symonds is an acclaimed professor emeritus from the U.S. Naval Academy, with over a dozen books on American naval and military history in print. But equally important if not more so, he relied very heavily on his association with the Battle of Midway Roundtable, an internet forum that for years has included scores of actual Midway veterans plus many of its premier historians and authors. For nitty-gritty details on any element of the battle, there is no better resource.
But as you might expect from an author of this caliber, Symonds reached far beyond the internet for research. Primary sources include material in the National Archives and from the Naval War College, the Naval History and Heritage Command, and of course the Naval Academy. The references include the author's interviews with and oral histories by some of Midway's key participants, including Joseph Rochefort, Edwin Layton, Richard Best, John "Jimmie" Thach, Albert Earnest, N. J. "Dusty" Kleiss, and Donald "Mac" Showers. While an impressive source list like that can also be found in other books, Symonds has managed to couple them with an account of the battle that overcomes the criticisms commonly leveled at some of the less successful Midway authors. His book is a dual dose of thorough research and expert composition that should propel it toward the top of any critical listing of works on Midway.
If one were to read this book's coverage of the American side of the battle, then follow that with "Shattered Sword" (Parshall & Tully's masterful account of the Japanese navy at Midway), he could rightly consider himself among the very best informed among those with an interest in the Battle of Midway at any level.The Battle of Midway (Pivotal Moments in American History) Overview
