This Business of Music: The Definitive Guide to the Music Industry, Ninth Edition (Book only) ReviewPerforming, Promoting and Producing music is one thing. Music Law is another - - and when you're not a million dollar record company but just another guy trying to make and promote music, and you can't afford $200.00 an hour for *multiple* legal consultations, you might be at a disadvantage, especially when you're dealing with slicksters who do.
This book for long has been one of the few serious resources available to individuals who need to really understand "the industry" and the laws relating to you and it (including how to protect your own work and performances as well as making agreements with other people, and not infringing copyright law.) About 5 years ago it underwent a major make over to deal with the digital revolution and other chages in the industry (including the Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998) and now even has a CD rom with plenty of printable legal documents, including 23 sample agreements.
The book might not have any cute picures and rock and roll stories, but if you need a serious understanding about everything fo contracts, agreements, performing rights, protecting ideas and titles, agents and managers, various legislation and so on and so forth, this is an essential work of reference. It is defitely *not* just another "Cheesy Wannabe Pop Star Magazine Presents : How To Get Your Demo Heatf and Become a Big and Groovy Recording Artist" type book, nor is it written in such legalese, that you need a lawyer to disencipher it... it is basically the definitive reference manual for any individual involved or getting involved in the music industry to have on hand. This Business of Music: The Definitive Guide to the Music Industry, Ninth Edition (Book only) Overview

This Business of Music Marketing and Promotion, Revised and Updated Edition ReviewIt seems that most reviewers are quite split on whether this is a "good" book or a "lousy" one. First off, reading the book I got a distinct impression that this book is not intended for musicians, it seems to be targeted more towards those in marketing who are familiar with marketing basics, but not about how they apply to the music industry.

There are much better books about the inner workings of the music industry (see books by Donald S. Passman and Moses Avalon.) There are much better books on marketing (see the "Guerrilla" series by Levinson and Godin). This book is adequate at introducing the music biz to marketing juniors, but not marketing to musicians.

One review wrote: "...dizzying amount of extremely useful information, all within an engrossing and enjoyable text" -- I find this review extremely suspect. I've read many books on both the music biz and marketing -- but this one is so mind-crushingly boring it's difficult to read and useful info is easily forgotten. This Business of Music Marketing and Promotion, Revised and Updated Edition Overview

This Business of Music, 10th Edition (This Business of Music: Definitive Guide to the Music Industry) ReviewAn absolute must-have. When I was a teenager in a band, This Business of Music was one of the first how-to books I ever bought. Many updates later, it's still the music industry Bible.
If you're a complete novice to the industry or you're not used to reading contract language, the technical terms and legalese can be confusing and slow-going at first. But stay with it; it will get easier as your understanding of the music business grows. Some other reviewers complained about this, but understanding some music industry legalese is vital if you want to be able to cover your *ss in the music industry before you can afford a good attorney. (Later, when you can afford a good attorney, you'll save a ton of money by having a basic understanding what your attorney is talking about. Savvy, successful musicians know what's in their contracts.)
Be patient, and you can get through it; no one ever has to know how many times you have to re-read something before it makes sense. When I bought my This Business of Music as a kid, I didn't think I'd ever get through it! But I did, and a music business career later, I'm a music business consultant.
