Handbook of Cognitive Behavioral Approaches in Primary Care ReviewThis volume can best be described as comprehensive, wide-ranging, valuable, and useful. It is useful inasmuch as the material described is rather easily adapted to patient work. The idea of this handbook examining a cognitive behavioral persepctive on this range of medical problems is reflective of the zeitgeist of the field. It is timely, up-to-date with entries authored by some of the foremost professionals in the field. The editing team, two psychologists (DiTomasso and Golden), and a family physician (Morris) made sure that the material covered would meet the needs of the psychologist, counselor and social worker needing insight into medical problems and the medical professional (physician, nurse, and physician assistant) being offered the behavioral side of the equation. The professional looking through the table of contents will find something for everybody. Justice Perverted: Sex Offense Law, Psychology, and Public Policy ReviewAt a time when many U.S. states are teetering on the verge of bankruptcy and essential public services are being slashed and burned, does it make sense to spend billions and billions of dollars on largely symbolic laws that do little or nothing to prevent or deter sex offending?
Not according to Charles Patrick Ewing, a forensic psychologist and respected law professor at the University at Buffalo Law School.
In Justice Perverted, Ewing systematically analyzes the wave of new sex offender laws from a cost-benefit perspective. In a measured voice, he surveys the science and legal terrain surrounding the civil detention of sexually violent predators, registration and residency restrictions, child pornography legislation, and laws against Internet offending. All of these laws may make people feel safer, he concludes, but at a steep financial and social cost.
Ewing takes particular aim at psychologists who have flocked to this lucrative niche. In choosing self interest over science, these professionals have sullied the profession, he maintains: "In the short run the payoff, especially for some individual practitioners, has been great, but in the long run, the damage done to their professions and the people who would be served by them may prove to be much greater."
He advocates for replacing current sex offender laws with ones that are evidence-based and cost-effective, that respect civil liberties, and that do not make a mockery of psychology and other mental health professions.
Ewing is a nationally known expert on forensic psychology and law. His other books include Insanity: Murder, Madness, and the Law, Minds on Trial: Great Cases in Law and Psychology, Trials of a Forensic Psychologist: A Casebook, and an oldie but goodie, Kids Who Kill.
I highly recommend this timely book to anyone who is interested in a comprehensive yet accessible overview of sex offender laws, scientific findings and social policy.

I've used the previous edition of this text and have reviewed the current one. While it is very informative regarding cognitive behavioral treatments, there is a serious deficiency. Some of these 'manualized' treatments utilize patient handouts as a core tool of the work. These are not included in the text. For example, Miklowitz and the Bipolar chapter. If I purchase a text like this, I don't want to have to purchase even more books to get the tools, or engage in extensive scavenging to find them, or spend the time creating my own. That defeats the purpose of my purchase. Perhaps the necessity of having to additionally purchase the published books of all these chapter writers is a goal of the editors and authors, but it is not my goal and won't happen. It inclines me to return to journal articles (which is perhaps best anyway) based on the needs of my caseload, because tools, patient surveys, handouts, are usually included. Call to the authors and editors: Do you want your work to inform clinical practice or not? If so, please make your work fully and genuinely usable for the clinician's office.
