Van Rooy has a fine sense of wit, balancing humor and crime in ex-con Monty Haaviko, a crooked man dedicated to a "straight" life, the experience of his past safely tucked away for future reference. Married to the equally pragmatic Claire, the pair has maintained a balance where Haaviko can still make a living- if sometimes a bit shady- but operates a far cry from any activities that might capture the attention of law enforcement and lead back to prison, wife and baby son Monty's absolute priorities. The fact that he may have to address some social inequities in his work only adds to the reader's enjoyment. The beneficiaries of Haaviko's lessons are always bad actors who need to be taught a lesson, Monty's McGuyverish methods innovative and uniquely successful, violence wrought of odds and ends, but just as effective.
When Manitoba-based activist Marie Blue Duck engages Haaviko to set up a smuggling route for illegal immigrants, he has no real objection. The money's good, the risk minor, other than for those who would muscle in on Marie's route for transporting their own goods (guns, drugs). Haaviko must neutralize these opportunists and does so with his usual creativity. When an old friend arrives with a desire for the straight life, Monty and Claire are happy to accommodate. Always one step ahead, Haaviko tackles each phase of his task with an eye to protecting his family and resisting temptation, though it always exists for an ex-con and drug addict. Certainly it is his criminal past that makes Haaviko such an engaging character and Van Rooy exploits this fact with great humor. A unique protagonist in a crowded genre, Haaviko fills a niche both dark and light, a good-natured ex-crook who doesn't dent his nature. Sadly, Van Rooy passed away.
