The Amboseli Elephants: A Long-Term Perspective on a Long-Lived Mammal ReviewLike many humans, I've felt deeply connected to elephants since we did that elephant walk in kindergarten: all bent forward and clasping both hands to make our arms swing side to side creating our magical new trunk; then walking round the classroom as deliberately and ponderously as 5 year olds can manage.

For you fellow elephant lovers ~ I am an elephant activist, no scholar ~ here is a rich and wonderful book, 12 years in the making.
It is a comprehensive compilation of long-term studies by the most experienced and respected elephant researchers today ~ bless their hard working hearts, minds and bodies.The book is full of maps and graphs and charts; each Section has its own editor/s with lots of Chapter contributors; and there are stunning gray and white photos (elephant colored) to amplify points made in the text.
I keep doing the "open to a page and read the first line of a paragraph" test, and find fascinating information each time. Scholarly and fun too? Yes, apparently it can be done.

I also want to recommend what serves as a lovely companion book to 'The Amboseli Elephants' : the 1992 'ECHO of the Elephants: The Story of an Elephant Family', by Cynthia Moss with photographs by Martyn Colbeck (BBC, Nature, etc.). More of a coffee table type book, but one which you cannot put down for the enchanting stories within and the breathtaking photos throughout. Echo of the Elephants: The Story of an Elephant Family
We are invited to share intimate encounters with the Amboseli elephant family led by matriarch Echo, with tons of color photographs that will make you stare and sigh: so surprisingly clear and close. It helps us feel a part of the Amboseli elephants' experience even as we sit on our comfy couch. No hot Land Rover for us.
These two fine books provide us with much information and inspiration, both needed to stem the terrible tide of lost elephant lives in Africa. We humans really must do our urgent best to ensure that little kindergarteners in 100 years will be delighted by videos of elephant families thriving in the wild.
