The Bristoe Campaign ReviewTwo things struck me after reading "The Bristoe Campaign," a self-published work by Adrian Tighe. The first was that this book is an exhaustively, lovingly researched work on the little-covered autumn 1863 campaign in the East. Although I think Tighe overstates the importance of the Bristoe Campaign, it is absolutely true that the maneuvering and engagements between the truncated Army of Northern Virginia and Army of the Potomac in the period between Gettysburg and the start of Grant's spring 1864 campaign are widely and unjustly ignored by mainstream scholarship. Tighe's work stands as the only dedicated book on the subject currently in print, and clearly he devoted a substantial amount of his time in researching the facts, studying the ground and preparing a truly spectacular series of maps.
However, "The Bristoe Campaign" has also fallen afoul of the fate of many self-published works: a wretched and wholesale lack of proper editing. I can't abide this sort of thing, since hiring an editor starts at several hundred dollars (for the services of a talented novice looking for credentials). After pouring all that work into writing the book and paying the costs of publishing it, surely a self-published author can go to at least that modest amount of extra trouble!
If not, then perhaps Tighe could have found someone better than his daughter (as noted in the acknowledgements) to do it for less? Or free or on favors? Anything would have been better than what was done with this book.
The errors in the prose are truly awful. It is no exaggeration to say that every other paragraph suffers from either a repeated clause or nearly identical, repeated sentence. This is the sort of thing every writer, however expert, does when composing a draft... but it should never, ever appear in the final version, let alone on such a massive scale.
The book also needed knowledgeable organizational direction to assist in its clarity. For example, one of the driving influences behind the Bristoe Campaign was the transfer of troops from both sides to Tennessee, so explaining what was going on in Tennessee in a clear and concise fashion somewhere in the first chapters was therefore very necessary. Tighe brings up Tennessee frequently, but explains the situation in an inadequate and fragmented fashion.
Serious problems go beyond mere nit-picking about grammar and spelling; they are compositional in nature and compromise the narrative value of the book, right down to its very core. If you need a reference source for the Bristoe Campaign, this is your book. It is chock full of detailed information. If you are a Civil War buff in search of an entertaining read about this little-known chapter of the war, however, you are in for a longer wait.The Bristoe Campaign Overview
