Chelsea Mansions: A Brock and Kolla Mystery (Brock and Kolla Mysteries) ReviewIn "Chelsea Mansions," by Barry Maitland, Detective Chief Inspector David Brock and Detective Inspector Kathy Kolla of London's Metropolitan Police investigate two seemingly unrelated slayings. The victims are Nancy Haynes, a seventy-year old American tourist, and Mikhail Moszynski, a wealthy Russian expatriate. An unidentified assailant picked up Ms. Haynes and threw her in front of a bus; someone stabbed Moszynski in the garden of his ostentatious home. What makes Kolla and Brock curious is the fact that the two murders occurred within days of one another, and that Haynes had been staying at the shabby Chelsea Mansions hotel, located right next door to the Russian's mansion. Quite a coincidence....The efficient and insightful Kolla and Brock are based in offices at Queen Anne's Gate, where their capable and dedicated team quickly begins processing the information that they hope will lead to an arrest. Maitland brilliantly describes the intricacies of police work, including the painstaking examination of CCTV footage, phone, and computer records; the interviewing of witnesses (often more than once); and the thorough analysis of each victim's past and present activities and associates in an attempt to find out who had the motive, means, and opportunity to commit the crimes.
"Chelsea Mansions" is a complex tale in which the past and the present intersect, as they do so often in police procedurals. Unfortunately for Brock and Kolla, politics rears its ugly head and they are caught in the crossfire. Even worse, one of the detectives comes down with a mysterious illness. Other complications include a possible romantic interest for Kathy (who always seems to draw the short straw when it comes to men) and a shocking revelation that will stun the usually unflappable DCI Brock.
Maitland's superb descriptive writing places us squarely in the streets of London. In addition, the author manages the difficult task of juggling an unusually large cast of characters with his usual expertise. One quibble is that the conclusion of "Chelsea Mansions" is riddled with so many confusing twists and turns that some readers may grow dizzy trying to keep track of who did what to whom and why.
